Directory of NGO/NPOs of Japan
in Africa
Published by Japan Citizen’s Network for TICAD
Preface
This directory was developed by Japan Citizen’s Network for TICAD (JCNT), a coalition of 30 organizations working in/on Africa. The JCNT was established in 2014 to act as a catalyst to make African citizens‘ voices heard, promote understanding of diverse Africa, learn from/contribute to the people in Africa, and bring effective input to political level conversation of TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on Africa). As we explore Japanese organizations working in/on Africa to compile directory 2017, we found that more groups than we had expected have been active in different places of Africa. We are confident that no directory has ever been compiled in this scale, 108 organizations listed across Japan, focusing only on Africa related non-profit organizations. On the other hand, the more we search, the more we know that there are many more Japanese organizations in Africa including the ones not mentioned in this directory. Once you open this directory, you will soon find that the types of fields, activities, scales are as diverse as the continent of Africa. The organizations listed here could be reached by various actors, non-state and state, not-for-profit and for profit, to incubate a new project. I deeply appreciate the organizations on this directory to take time and compile data for this project. I also would like to extend my deepest thanks to all organizations which, including the ones not posted on this directory, answered our inquiry kindly. Lastly but not least, I would like to express our appreciation to JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) for “JICA Donation Fund for the People of the World”, whose fund was appropriated to this project. I hope this directory plays a catalyst role to connect people on the ground, promote partnerships, and contribute to fair, sustainable, equal development for people in Africa and Japan. Overview NGOs/NPOs of Japan in Africa We have approached nearly 150 non-profit organizations in relation with Africa across Japan in two month between May and July 2017. Due to the time and resource constraints, we could hardly grasp all the activities of those organizations. Information provided here is totally up to their spontaneous information. Knowing that; our survey capacity of reaching out organizations outside of
Tokyo region was limited, projects’ status quo, the geographic pattern and number of
organizations working in Africa change over time, NGOs/NPOs were not necessarily asked to specify all the
names of countries with projects in this survey, we still captured some facts with regard to non-profit activities from Japan to Africa. Currently Japanese NGO/NPOs have been involved in diverse projects in 40 countries across Africa, except for some countries in central and south west of the continent. In fact, the area of contribution is extensive across the continent. For official language patterns, 17 English speaking countries are included, while French speaking countries are 15, and 3 countries used both English and French as official languages, followed by Arabic, Portuguese and Amharic speaking countries. Kenya is the biggest recipient in Africa of NGOs/NPOs from Japan followed by Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa. Burkina Faso and Rwanda are the French speaking countries that host relatively many Japanese organizations among French speaking countries. Lastly but not least, we have to note that some organizations are developing unique and essential activities here at home, Japan, supporting people from Africa. Furthermore, most organizations are engaged with awareness raising activities to set people free from stereotypical notion of “Africa” and to establish the equality bottom line based on people to people partnerships.

Message
We at ARC believe that society is very much like the human body: conflicts are illnesses. The eastern way of looking at health issues is to approach the human being from within in an attempt to restore the body’s original powers. Orthodox international assistance, however, is like western surgery – which treats the illness from outside the body. We believe that our eastern way of thought, fully embedded in oriental philosophy, may be instrumental in facilitating reconciliation within post-conflict society in Africa.

Message
Women's Action Against FGM, Japan (WAAF) is a non-governmental and nonprofit organization launched in January 1996. WAAF works toward the abolition of female genital mutilation (FGM). Although FGM is not practiced in Japan, we see FGM as a harmful practice that poses a serious risk to the sexual and reproductive health of women and as a violation of the bodily integrity and human rights of women. The struggle against violence and discrimination against women has no national nor geographical boundaries.
