DIRECTOR’S REPORT

We have been open for more than a month and are seeing a steady stream of people in the building. So

far, everything has been going well. It often feels very empty in the Library however, we feel that

remaining conservative is still the best option right now. Staff and patrons are getting used to the new

routine and they are able to appropriately distance themselves from one another. Masks are worn at

work at all times in public areas and in staff areas too. The exception to mask wearing is when a staff

member is in an office by themselves.

Digital resource usage continues to climb and the drive-up window has been very busy. We have three

main service points: online, drive-up and one-hour building reservations. We’re also still providing

programs online and virtual reference and virtual meeting rooms are still operating.

The phone system has been ordered and Neil is working with Gregg Communications on the

implementation. We’re looking forward to the improved efficiencies and added safety features the new

system offers.

The programming staff held their first Social Justice Learning Group meeting on July 2. About 40 people

attended virtually and discussion ensued around the book What If I Say the Wrong Thing? by Verna

Myers. The group will continue to meet throughout the fall. Meetings discussions are based on

watching or reading curated media dealing with race, gender, education, poverty, and other topics.

Adult Services Department June 2020

Reopening As we approached reopening, the number of interactions grew and we began staffing

the remote desk with 3 staff members (including the Kids’ Department staff). We took

more questions on the day we opened than we did a year before on the same day.

Reference and technology help interactions are much higher with the building open.

The numbers below reflect only interactions for Adult Services Staff.

The Journey Back to Reopening The chart below shows the number of patron interactions Adult Services has handled

per day since we began on Monday, March 16.

KIDS’ LIBRARY June 2020

DEPARTMENT UPDATES Staff have been excited to be back in the building, assisting our patrons both in person and via the virtual reference desk. We’ve learned a lot about the day-to-day operations of the Adult Services Department (what an impressive bunch!), and have enjoyed working more closely with them. Numerous patrons have also enthusiastically commented about how grateful they are to be able to visit the library again, many of whom have exclaimed over how big our frogs have gotten.

PROGRAMS The Summer Reading Program officially kicked off on Saturday, June 20. A special thanks to the EPL Friends of the Library for sponsoring the prize drawing gift cards to local businesses for our readers. PROGRAMS Sessions/Qty Total Participants

ILL: Interlibrary Loan will resume July 20, 2020.

June proved to be another exciting month! With the Library reopening, new COVID-related safety signs were created

and hung around the Library, especially around service points. Additionally, all posters and displays needed

updating. Marketing Department staff focused their efforts on the two Lobby cases. One features an attractive

Summer Reading display; the other is a physical manifestation of one of our spring community engagement efforts

in honor of Earth Day. We invited the public to collect pop tabs and bread tabs and we’re now accepting

these collections through July 31. Additionally, Marketing staff worked with Adult Services and Kids’ Library staff to

make sure our website accurately reflected Summer Reading information and helped test out and set up

components of the Wandoo Summer Reading platform.

Work on the fall issue of Fine Print also started in June, which with our pivot to online programming, has needed a lot of attention and finessing. Online programs continue to be popular. The Library’s YouTube channel, which can be accessed at elmlib.org/youtube, now has 300 subscribers! One program I am particularly proud of is What We’re Enjoying Wednesday, which has proved popular. I think this recurring program series does a great job capturing the wide interests of our staff and highlights the Library’s strengths: readers advisory and access to quality information. I also love that staff from different departments submit entries.

Here are some sample screenshots of our online presence from June:
