Reliance Cementation Pvt. Ltd. is intending to setup a cement plant of
about 5.0 million tons per annum capacity near Mukutban in Yavatmal
District of Maharashtra. This firm has identified three mine lease areas;
Mukutban lease (572ha) in Yavatmal district and Persoda (765ha) and
Chopan (247ha) mine lease in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra.
Under EIA process, the agency has allotted the task of assessment of
biodiversity in and around the proposed mine lease areas to GUIDE.
This project activity has commenced in January 2010.
19 Annual Report 2009-10
The study area was delineated into two zones; the core zone and buffer zone i.e. proposed mine lease area and
buffer zone i.e. the area covering 10 km radius from the core zone. A preliminary filed survey was conducted adopting
stratified random sampling to determine the sampling locations and quadrate method was used to assess the
biodiversity status covering core and buffer zones. Field data collection on floral (Tree, Shrub, Climber, Herb and
Grass) and major faunal (Amphibian, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals) components are in progress.

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) wanted to divert the
existing (natural) river course to expand the boundary of the mining
lease to meet increased lignite production demand. In this context this
project was carried out to assess the effect of river diversion on flora
and fauna status with special reference to threatened biota of the study
area. The study discusses the status of flora (Tree, Shrub, Climber,
Herb and Grass) and major faunal groups (Amphibian, Reptiles, Birds
and Mammals). Under this project a total of 169 flora, 6 herpetofauna,
61 terrestrial and 24
aquatic birds and 8 mammal species were reported within the study
area. This list includes six and four species of threatened flora and
fauna respectively. The existing status of flora and fauna including
threatened biota were correlated with project associated activity to
identify and evaluate the likely impacts of the river diversion. Based
on the impacts envisaged, appropriate mitigation measures have
been suggested under the Environmental Management.

20 Annual Report 2009-10
The project funded by MoES, New Delhi was conceived in the view of impact of
aggressive industrialization in Kachchh coast on coastal biodiversity. Benthic and
pelagic diversity at 3 stations located in 120 km coastal stretch of Kachchh district
was investigated in the present attempt. The biotopes studied included Intertidal,
Subtidal and Pelagic
(zooplankton and
phytoplankton) habitats.
Besides, nine crucial water
quality parameters governing
the biological components of
these ecosystems were also
studied. These studies were carried out in pre-fixed sites at three stations, namely Mundra, Mandvi (Nana Liza) and
Kharo creek. Seasonal shift, density, diversity, composition and distribution of faunal components were analysed from
the monthly data grouped seasonally. In total, 92 intertidal forms, 42 subtidal forms and 91 planktonic forms have
been described. Results of this study already submitted in the form of final report to MoES, New Delhi.
15. Baseline Monitoring Study for Biological Characteristics in Kharo Creek, Kachchh, Gujarat
Project Funded By Sanghi Cement Pvt. Ltd.
Team Dr. G.A.Thivakaran (Principal Investigator)
Mr. Sourav Kundu, Ms. V. Devi
Budget Rs. 4.5 Lakhs/year
Duration 5 years
Status Ongoing
The present study aims to generate
baseline information on the marine
environment including mangroves,
benthic fauna and planktonic diversity of
Kharo creek, which will serve for a long
term ecological monitoring to assess
impacts, if any, due to Sanghi port
activity. At each station, plankton, water
and benthic samplings were carried out
whereas mangrove and intertidal fauna
were studied at 6 stations in the vicinity
of the Jetty. This monitoring study will be
helpful to delineate the adverse impact of marine based activities and to take appropriate remedial measures to
ensure coastal well being.
