About us

Headway East London (www.headwayeastlondon.org) is a charity supporting people affected by brain injury. Working across 13 London boroughs we offer specialist support and services for survivors and their family. We offer therapies, advocacy, family support and community support work alongside our day service: a community venue where people can make the most of their abilities and interests. We also promote awareness and understanding of brain injury by providing information to the public, and offering training to university students, professionals and businesses.

Our vision is to build a community where people with brain injury are valued, respected and able to fulfil their potential.

About the role

Our new Director of Operations will lead our core services for survivors of brain injury working with 13 boroughs across North and East London. Coming out of the Covid-19 crisis you will lead our services to develop and evolve building on the best of what we’ve done and what our members want for the future. We are well known for providing first class services that mix professional and high quality with personal and relational, ensuring that we meet the needs of every person as an individual. Building on our excellent reputation for quality services for people with a brain injury you will manage our relationships with stakeholders who are local authorities and CCGs currently but could include others in the future. As part of our Senior Management Team you will help to lead and embed a culture of opportunity and growth based on our strong values.

A short description of what you will do…

• Provide strategic leadership to our core services including: a day centre, therapy team, community support workservice and case work team.

• Organise and oversee the effective administration and operations of the organisation.• Review unit costs for our services and ensure full cost recovery across the service.• Be an ambassador for the organisation, generating new opportunities and service development with senior

stakeholders.• Take a key role in the leadership of the organisation as part of the Senior Management Team.

The post holder will line manage a team including:

• Day Service Manager• Therapy Service Manager• Community Support Work Service Manager• Casework Service Manager• Senior Administrator• IT and Facilities Officer

The postholder will carry out an extensive review of all services with a view to restructure to ensure our services are effective and delivered efficiently. You will provide support across the wider organisation as necessary. The postholder will attend, participate and contribute in board meetings.

Main duties and responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership to our day service, therapies, case work and community service teams

• Support managers to develop a future plan for the sustainability of our core services that is in line with theorganisational strategy, values and culture.

• Build good relationships with stakeholders in the boroughs we serve to develop opportunities for growth anddevelopment of our services.

• Lead on commissioning/tender/framework contracting arrangements with the local authorities we serve.• Work with staff to ensure our members’ voices are at the centre of everything we do.• Work with the managers and the Finance Director to ensure unit costs are accurate and work to ensure full costs

of the service are recovered from customers.• Support the teams and work with the Director of Development to explore new opportunities to develop our

business to generate income.• Implement effective ways to evidence the outcomes of our members and the impact of our services to

demonstrate our effectiveness.

Organise the operations of the organisation

• Review the operations (administration, IT, facilities) and consider the needs of the organisation.• Reorganise operations to be delivered more efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the whole

organisation.• Once in place, provide operational and strategic support to ensure that staff across the whole organisation are

well supported.

Contribute to the effective leadership and administration of Headway East London

• Work as part of the Senior Management Team and support the board in setting the organisation’s strategicdirection.

• Lead on developing an annual operational plan for the organisation including a matrix on which to evidenceoutcomes and progress to the board.

• Embed a culture across the organisation of generating income and being more commercially aware while stayingtrue to our values.

• Provide leadership and support across the wider organisation as necessary and appropriate.• Monitor and report on the outcomes of the team’s work on a regular basis• Contribute to budgeting and financial planning, managing and monitoring identified budgets, working with the

Finance Director and other members of relevant teams
