Development Overview
SMU has had great success in its fundraising activities over the past 22 years. The University launched The
Campaign for SMU: A Time to Lead, a $300 million campaign, in 1997. The five-year campaign quickly
grew in scope to include $542 million in gifts from more than 40,000 alumni, parents, corporations,
foundations, and friends. A Time to Lead supported efforts outlined in the University’s Centennial Master
Plan, including the construction or renovation of 21 campus facilities and extensive landscaping and
refurbishment across campus.
The University’s subsequent campaign, SMU Unbridled: The Second Century Campaign, reached its $1
billion goal about three months ahead of schedule in September 2015. The campaign raised unprecedented
funding for scholarships, faculty positions, and other enhancements to campus life, including the creation of
the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and the establishment of five
new residence halls and a dining center.
SMU is currently involved in an important initiative, Pony
Power: Strengthening the Stampede, which seeks to
provide an average of $50 million dollars in flexible
support on an annual basis for current, pressing needs.
Funds from this drive, which total $110 million since its
launch in 2017, impact all areas of the University,
including financial aid, campus improvements, academic
excellence, and research and athletics.
The University endowment is currently valued at $1.62
billion, and its fiscal year 2019 operating budget is $690
million. In the last fiscal year, SMU’s alumni contributed more than $25 million in current-use gifts alone.
Donors who have supported SMU for at least two years, made planned gifts, or pledged more than $1,000
for the University receive membership in three giving societies in recognition of their generosity, and society
members have contributed $30 million in fiscal year 2019. Nearly 6,000 donors have supported SMU for 20
consecutive years or more.

Overview
Southern Methodist University began as a bold vision shared
by the Methodist Church and civic leaders in Dallas. With a
rapidly growing population, Dallas community leaders had
high aspirations for success and recognized the need for a
great university in their dynamic city. At the same time,
Methodist officials, seeking to expand the Church's mission
of education, sought to establish a new university in the
Southwest. The groups joined resources, and SMU’s charter
was signed on April 17, 1911. Four years later, in fall 1915,
SMU opened as Dallas' University, with 456 students and 37
faculty members. The curriculum focused on liberal arts, theology, and music, and the campus consisted of
two permanent buildings, including Dallas Hall, named in honor of the city.
Now in its second century, the University is on the rise thanks to strong, stable leaders with long tenures at
SMU. It aims to create, expand, and impart knowledge through teaching, research, and service, shaping
world-changing leaders who contribute to their communities and excel in their professions in a global
society. SMU serves as an internationally recognized, intellectual resource for Dallas and the world. While it
has deep roots in the Methodist tradition, the University is nonsectarian in its teaching and is committed to
open inquiry and academic freedom.
President R. Gerald Turner has served as SMU’s
President since 1995. Under his leadership, the
University has made unprecedented progress
academically and financially.
The University aspires to be one of the premier
private higher learning institutions in the United
States. To this end, the Launching SMU’s Second
Century strategic plan lays out six ambitious goals
through 2025: to enhance the academic quality and
stature of the University; to improve teaching and
learning; to strengthen scholarly research and
creative achievement and opportunities for innovation; to sustain student development and a supportive

responsible stewardship of resources.
SMU is home to more than 6,000 undergraduates and more
than 5,000 graduate students, who make up a diverse and

undergraduates and 49% of graduate students are female.
Nearly 80% of first-year students are awarded grants
and/or scholarships, and 72% of undergraduates graduate
without debt. Among students reporting a religious
preference, 26% are Catholic, 13% are Methodist, 39% are
from other Protestant denominations, and 13% represent
other religions, including Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. For students living on campus, SMU’s 11
Residential Commons provide an instant community with leadership opportunities and faculty mentors, and
all students and faculty benefit from proximity to the Dallas metropolitan area as an extension of the
classroom through Engaged Learning projects and community partnerships.
SMU’s University Park/Highland Park campus is situated on 234
acres and considered one of the most beautiful in the nation.
The University is located just five minutes north of downtown
Dallas, in one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions, offering
unique learning, research, social, and career opportunities to
students, faculty, and staff. Students also take credit courses at
SMU-in-Taos, the University’s scenic campus in the mountains
of New Mexico.
