    When driving is part of your job duties, whether you are behind

    the wheel of a rental vehicle, a van, a company

    car, or an eighteen-wheeler, you are a professional driver. Most drivers can drive around the block without incident, but it takes a dedicated professional to drive perfectly for thousands of miles. When professional drivers are at the controls of any vehicle, they should always remember that defensive driving is a full time job. They take the time to complete pre-trip checklists and perform inspections that familiarize the driver with the vehicle and identifies unsafe mechanical conditions that may need repair.

    The driving conditions of todays roads and highways demand a higher level of skill, knowledge, and decision-making ability. A defensive driver is someone who looks out for the mistakes of other drivers; not merely a person who has had the good fortune to avoid accidents.

    Safety-conscious drivers:

    develop good habits and practice them continually;

    are prepared mentally and physically every time they are behind the wheel;

    comply with all traffic laws and are courteous to others;

    remember that speed, whether too slow or too fast, kills;

    condition their driving to the current driving conditions;

    maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them-one vehicle length for each 10 mph; and

    are aware of the vehicles limitations.

    Defensive drivers:

    have foresight that gives them the ability to size up traffic situations on the road ahead;

    start slowing down sooner and apply the brakes the instant they see a hazard developing;

    apply the brakes gradually so they dont spin or grind to a stop so quickly that they risk a rear-end collision; and

    anticipate the incorrect actions of other drivers in time to take the actions necessary to prevent the accident.

    Professional drivers:

    practice defensive driving to prevent accidents, in spite of the incorrect actions of other drivers or adverse weather conditions;

    anticipate driving hazards and know how to protect themselves from roadway dangers;

    remain alert and focus their attention on driving by keeping their minds free of distractions;

    watch for and instantly recognize accident-causing factors;

    anticipate traffic problems that may develop and decide whether these developments could be dangerous.In other words, defensive drivers must learn to

    maintain and operate their vehicles in a manner that avoids contributing to an accident or being involved in a preventable accident. Remember to drive defensively and practice safety; dont learn it by accident.

    Cuando manejar es parte de su trabajo, ya sea que lo haga detrs

    del volante de un vehculo rentado, una camioneta, un

    automvil de la compaa o un remolque de 18 ruedas, usted se

    convierte en un conductor profesional. La mayora de los conductores pueden darle la vuelta a la manzana sin problema alguno, pero se necesita un profesional con dedicacin para manejar perfectamente por miles de millas. Cuando los conductores profesionales controlan cualquier vehculo, deben recordar siempre que el manejar a la defensiva es un trabajo de tiempo completo. Se toman el tiempo necesario para completar listas de verificacin antes de los viajes y realizan inspecciones que familiarizan al conductor con el vehculo e identifican condiciones mecnicas peligrosas que puedan necesitar reparacin.

    Las condiciones de manejo de los caminos y carreteras de hoy en da demandan un nivel ms alto de habilidad, conocimiento y capacidad para tomar decisiones. Un conductor a la defensiva es aqul que se fija en los errores de otros conductores; no simplemente una persona que tiene la suerte de evitar accidentes.

    Los conductores conscientes de la seguridad: desarrollan buenos hbitos y los practican

    continuamente; estn mental y fsicamente preparados siempre que

    estn detrs del volante;

    cumplen con todas las reglas de trnsito y son amables con otros;

    recuerdan que la velocidad, tanto muy baja como muy alta, es fatal;

    condicionan su manejo a las condiciones de manejo actuales;

    mantienen una distancia segura con el vehculo de adelante: un vehculo por cada 10 mph; y

    son conscientes de las limitaciones del vehculo.

    Los conductores a la defensiva: tienen una visin que les da la capacidad de prever

    las situaciones de trnsito que pueden presentarse;

    comienzan a bajar la velocidad ms pronto y frenan en el instante en que notan algn peligro;

    frenan gradualmente para evitar derraparse o frenar de imprevisto rpidamente y provocar un choque con

    otros vehculos; y anticipan las acciones incorrectas de otros

    conductores a tiempo para tomar las medidas necesarias para evitar un accidente.

    Los conductores profesionales: manejan a la defensiva para prevenir accidentes,

    a pesar de las acciones incorrectas de otros conductores o de las condiciones adversas del clima;

    anticipan los peligros al conducir y saben cmo protegerse de los peligros de las carreteras;

    permanecen alertas y concentran su atencin en conducir con la mente libre de distracciones;

    estn atentos y reconocen instantneamente los factores causantes de accidentes;

    anticipan problemas de trnsito que pueden desarrollarse y deciden si dichos problemas pueden ser peligrosos.En otras palabras, los conductores a la defensiva

    deben aprender a mantener y operar sus vehculos de manera que eviten contribuir a algn accidente o estar involucrados en un accidente previsible. Recuerde conducir a la defensiva y llevar a cabo las prcticas de seguridad; no aprenda por accidente.
