This course provides the skills and knowledge to work as an enrolled nurse under the supervision of the registered nurse in
a variety of settings including acute, aged care, community, rehabilitation and mental health. The duration of the program is
from 14 to 18 months depending on completion of mandatory clinical placement.
Stage 1 - Completion of Application form
Applicants will be required to complete the application form on page 5 of this guide. Please attach copies of all required
documents with this application and provide two (2) written references. All information will be treated confidentially.
Stage 2 - Literacy and numeracy testing
Applicants will be required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) or Australian Council for Educational Research
(ACER) assessment to display competence in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy.
These tools are a Commonwealth approved language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) online assessment tool. This testing will
be undertaken at TAFE campuses.
Stage 3 - Initial eligibility assessment and cull
Once your literacy and numeracy results and enrolment application is received, TAFE Nursing will undertake an initial
assessment of eligibility and will cull incomplete or ineligible applications.
Stage 4 - Interview
You will be advised if you are successful to proceed to interview as soon as possible after the initial eligibility cull and
literacy and numeracy results are known. The purpose of the interview is to provide you with an opportunity to speak to the
panel about your skills and experience. During the interview you will be asked open-ended questions that seek to assess
your characteristics that would assist you in a nursing career. There will be a minimum of two (2) people on each interview
panel which will include a representative from the TAFE College and Health RTO.
You will be expected to provide the following original documents and information:
Completed application form including referees and experience
Proof of academic achievements
Proof of English language requirements
Proof of Australian Citizenship / Identification (100 point check)
Stage 5 – Reference checks
The application form includes a template for two (2) reference reports. You must send these two (2) written reference
reports with your application form. One (1) or both reference reports is to be completed by your most recent employer or
your high school principal or senior teacher, and the other one (1) can be completed by a person who is able to report on
your experience or character. The reference reports cannot be completed by a family member.
A member of the interview panel will contact your referees as nominated to verify the reference report. This will occur after
the interview.
Stage 6 – Notification and acceptance of a place
You will be advised by letter or email of one of the following outcomes:
1. You have been successful and have been offered a place in the course
2. You have been placed on a list for a second round offer if places become available
3. You have been unsuccessful
Decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Am I eligible for government subsidised training?
To be eligible for a government-subsidised position, you must be:
15 years old or over
no longer at school
living or working in NSW
an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, humanitarian visa holder, or an asylum
seeker or refugee on one of the following bridging visas:
BVA – subclass 010; BVB – subclass 020; BVC – subclass 030; BVD – subclasses 040 or 041; BVE – subclasses 050 or
051
What are the academic requirements?
Satisfactory completion of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent
OR
Satisfactory completion of a Certificate III (AQF Level 3) qualification or above.
What are the English language requirements?
You must demonstrate your English language competency in one of the following ways 1. If English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed in English in one of the recognised countries, including at least two years between years 7 and 12. (Recognised countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA) OR 2. Completion of five (5) years (full-time equivalent) continuous education taught and assessed solely in English, which includes a combination of secondary, tertiary, or secondary vocational education qualifications or a combination of all three in one of the recognised countries above no more than five years prior to applying for registration
NOTE: the English language requirements includes that your Diploma of Nursing must be a minimum of one (1) year full time equivalent pre-registration program of study otherwise English language testing is an additional requirement. OR 3. English Language achievement in AHPRA approved tests including: (Please note that the results can be collected across two (2) tests within a six (6) month period) - Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination with a minimum score overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the 4 components - listening, reading, writing and speaking from one test sitting. - Occupational English Test (OET) with minimum score of B in each of the 4 components - PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the 4 components in one sitting - TOEFL iBT at a minimum overall score of 94 with reading at a minimum of 24, listening a minimum of 24, speaking at a minimum of 23 and writing at a minimum of 27 - Other English language tests approved by the Board from time to time.
What does an Enrolled Nurse do?
As an Enrolled Nurse, your duties will range from providing physical and emotional care, to more complex duties such as
administering medications. You will also have the opportunity to perform these duties in a range of different clinical areas
including medical, surgical, mental health, paediatrics, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, oncology, operating theatres and rural

What hospitals will I visit as part of the Diploma program?
You are required to undertake a minimum of 400 workplace clinical hours to complete the program. All units of competency
and the workplace clinical must be successfully completed to receive the qualification and to register with the Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia.

Do I need to be immunised?
To undertake this program, you must be immunised. You cannot do your clinical placements in NSW public hospitals if you
are not immunised for a range of infectious diseases.
All health workers have a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to safeguard themselves and their patients and clients
from vaccine preventable diseases. NSW Health sets mandatory requirements and procedures for employment screening to
fulfil a duty of care to vulnerable patients and clients.

Physical demands of the job
If called to interview, applicants will be asked to sign an acknowledgment of their ability to meet the physical and
emotional demands of an Enrolled Nurse.
You must declare, during your interview, any health condition(s) (physical or mental), which might prevent you from
performing the demands of the job.
What is student registration?
All students of the Diploma of Nursing will need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

All students of the Diploma of Nursing program are required to abide by the codes and guidelines of the profession
when carrying out their professional experience.
What other checks are required?
If successful, you will also be required to sign a declaration that you have read and understood the NSW Health Code of
Conduct and that you will notify NSW Health if you are charged with any criminal offences. You will also be required to
undertake a criminal record check before placement in health facilities.
