    Your degree at a glanceYear 1You will build a base of broad businessknowledge through the core units,covering all areas of business frommanagement, accounting and economicsthrough to international and electronicbusiness. With generic skills in all areas,you’ll have an understanding of howbusinesses operate within the commercialand legal environment. Your advertisingmajor starts in second semester with thequestion of why consumers choose theproducts they buy. You’ll also learn howadvertising works and how agenciesinteract with their clients, media andsuppliers.

    Year 2Advertising becomes more hands-on in

    your second year. You learn how to writeadvertising that solves client’s problems;How to use words and images to stiremotion and compel action. You alsolearn about the multitude of differentmedia channels and how to build theminto creative and cost effective mediaschedules. You’ll also have theopportunity to personalise your degreewith the selection of your second studyarea.

    Year 3In your third year, the focus is on beingmore strategic. You explore the issuessurrounding being an advertisingmanager, such as branding andcontroversial advertising and compete ina case competition. You integrate digitalinto the advertising mix and develop aportfolio to help you get a job. And youround out your major by formulating anadvertising campaign from a real-worldclient’s brief. Working as a team, you’llresearch your client’s advertising problemand develop creative ideas, match themto innovative media solutions and delivera boardroom pitch to the client. Yourclient could be a Queensland icon suchas Queensland Day, the Ekka or theBrisbane Lions, a charity such asMuscular Dystrophy, or a nationalconsumer goods or pharmaceuticalcompany.

    Year 2Delving further into your major, you willlearn more advanced frameworks andskills to understand how production andexchange advance our welfare, theeconomics of market structures, and theroles of fiscal and monetary policy in anopen economy. You will contemplate theinterplay between government, privatefirms and consumers, and analyse theincreasing globalisation of world tradeand investment.     Year 3Research projects will build your practicalskills. In the capstone unit, you will applyeconomic theories learned so far to topicsof current interest, such as the federalbudget, Australia’s taxation policy, ageingpopulation or global warming.     Year 2You will build a deeper understanding ofthe fundamental concepts of finance – thetime value of money and the effect ofinterest rates, diversification and its role informing an investment portfolio, and therelationship between risk and return.
