In today's Gospel, we hear about an encounter

between Jesus and some Sadducees. The Sadducees

were a party of Judaism active in Jesus' time,

descended from the priestly family of Zadok.

The Sadducees are described in this Gospel as

opponents to the belief in resurrection. In the

dialogue presented here, we see an example of the

means of disputation that was common in first century Judaism.

Jesus argues from the same written Law of Moses to show that there is

resurrection. Using the texts from the Book of Exodus (Chapter 3) that

describe Moses' encounter with God in the burning bush, Jesus shows that God

is the God of the living, not the dead. Here Jesus uses the same method and

texts of the Sadducees to counter them. As the Gospel text suggests, he beat

them at their own game!

More importantly, in this discourse Jesus shows the limits of our imaginations

when it comes to eternal life. The Sadducees argued against resurrection

because of the limits of earthly existence. They did not imagine another

possibility for existence and relationship with God. Jesus proposes that the

possibilities of resurrected life are beyond our imaginations. Jesus'

conclusion suggests something else as

well: To spend time worrying about

resurrected life is to miss the point. The

point is eternal relationship with God is

possible, for God is the God of the

living, “. . . for to him all are

alive.” (Loyola Press)

Jesus points out that there is a unity in

God’s designs from the beginning. From the first, God has been the Lord of

life, not of death. The unending life we will have, in God – the source and

origin of all that we admire and hold dear – will certainly be a new existence,

beyond all adequate imagining in this life. But this unimaginable fullness will

also be the realisation of all the realistic hopes and longings we have ever

known. Life in God will be… the affirmation of all that makes us human –

a full human existence, in a new heaven and a new earth. In the Risen Lord,

and his teaching concerning the life- giving ‘reign’ of God, we catch a

precious glimpse what lies ahead of us. (John Thornhill sm – Emmaus Series)

THIS WEEK’S READINGS and PRAYERS Feast of the Dedication of the

Lateran Basilica in Rome We have a feast

day honoring the dedication of this Roman

church because of the historical and spiritual

importance the basilica holds for the entire Church.

Initially the observance of this feast was confined to the city of

Rome; then, beginning in 1565, it was extended to all the

Churches of the Roman rite. The honoring of this sacred edifice

was a way of expressing love and veneration for the Roman

Church, which, as St. Ignatius of Antioch says, “presides in

charity” over the whole Catholic communion. (Letter to the Romans, 1:1).

On this solemnity the Word of God recalls an essential truth: the

temple of stones is a symbol of the living Church, the

Christian community, which in their letters the Apostles Peter

and Paul already understood as a “spiritual edifice,” built by God

with “living stones,” namely, Christians themselves, upon the one

foundation of Jesus Christ, who is called the “cornerstone”

“Brothers, you are God’s building,” St. Paul wrote, and added:

“holy is God’s temple, which you are” (1 Corinthians 3:9c, 17).

… the feast celebrates a mystery that is always relevant: God’s

desire to build a spiritual temple in the world, a community that

worships him in spirit and truth (cf. John 4:23-24). But this

observance also reminds us of the importance of the material

buildings in which the community gathers to celebrate the praises

of God. Every community therefore has the duty to take special

care of its own sacred buildings, which are a precious religious

and historical patrimony. For this we call

upon the intercession of Mary Most Holy,

that she help us to become, like her, the

“house of God,” living temple of his love.

(Benedict XVI, Angelus Address, Nov 9, 2008)

R.C.I.A. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Last Thursday we learned a bit more about the Liturgy of

the Word, a time during the Mass when we should

LISTEN, learn and afterwards think about what we have

heard. Next week we will be learning a bit more about

Initiation and the Sacraments of Initiation.

R.C.I.C. Rite of Christian Initiation of Children A programme will be commencing on Sunday 11 December

for children aged 7 years or older who have not received their

Sacraments of Initiation i.e. Baptism,

Confirmation and Eucharist. DO YOU KNOW of

a child who might benefit from this? The lessons

will be held in the meeting room at St. Patricks

during 8 a.m. Mass on Sundays, except school

holidays . Enquiries to Ellen Downey 9477 7180

Pope Francis has named Sunday 6

November, as the day of “Jubilee for

Prisoners”. Pope Francis shows us the

importance of accompanying one another

in the ups and downs of life. We all

stumble; make mistakes; fail others and ourselves. But we

are all capable of loving and of experiencing hope.

The Year of Mercy— “Merciful like the Father”,

invites each one of us to follow the merciful example of

God - forgiving and loving rather than judging and

condemning. No matter what the sin - God’s love is

unconditional. Many people have spent time in jail -

including saints and even Jesus himself. His message is

meant for everyone, regardless of the circumstances

because we all possess human dignity.

We invite all parishioners to join in prayer for all prisoners

that they come to know their God’s love, mercy and

forgiveness. May all of us remember the victims of crime.

We remember also all those who are entrusted with the care

of those who are incarcerated, especially our Chaplains.

A Multicultural Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral

Sunday 27th November at 2pm

will be celebrated by Bishop Terry Brady with representation

from as many Ethnic groups as would like to participate.

The readings, prayers of the faithful and songs will be in

various languages. After Mass there will be afternoon tea and

a multicultural dance and song spectacular on the steps of the

Cathedral celebrating the diversity and

richness in our Australian church.

All communities are asked to bring

biscuits and cakes to share for

afternoon tea after the celebration. All

are welcome. Contact Kylie Cullen for
