    Established in 1984, United Way of the Midlands Humanitarian of the Year Award is presented annually to a recipient who has clearly demonstrated extraordinary leadership in philanthropy and human services. The highly selective criteria for the award ensure its position as one of the highest honors in the Midlands. A distinguished selection committee meets in the fall to select the recipient. Nominations are accepted from members of the Tocqueville Society, Palmetto Society, the United Way Board and community leaders.

  • HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR 2014

    JUDY DAVIS is the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) and its Companion Companies.

    In addition to her role as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer for BCBSSC, Judy also serves as its Corporate Secretary. Besides directing the activities of the companys Law Department, her other managerial responsibilities include Public Affairs, Corporate Communications and Charitable Giving. In addition, she oversees three ancillary businesses that generate over $1.75 billion in revenue: Companion Property & Casualty Insurance Company, Companion Life & Health Insurance Company and UCI Medical, the management company for the multistate network of Doctors Care offices.

    Judy currently serves as a board member for Engenuity SC, SC Launch, United Way of the Midlands, Central Carolina Community Foundation, Columbia College and Palmetto Conservation Foundation. She has previously served as chair of the United Way of the Midlands Board of Directors, the South

  • Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and Trinity Housing Corporation of Columbia. In 2006, she chaired the United Way campaign that raised $9.5 million.

    Her diverse interests coupled with the resources of BCBSSC, which is the largest insurance company headquartered in South Carolina, enable Judy to encourage the deployment of volunteers, capital and leadership to critical causes across the region and state.

    In addition to serving United Way of the Midlands as a volunteer, Judy has also been a consistent Tocqueville Society member and is now a charter member of the Legacy Society.

    Judy, who has already been recognized numerous times for her commitment to her industry and serving the Midlands community, received the 2012 NAMI Award, 2011 Insurance Networking News Award and 2011 Engenuity SC Vision Award. She has also received the Association of Fundraising Professionals Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award (2006), Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Award for Volunteerism (2007), United Ways Alyce Kemp DeWitt Award (2008) and the Girl Scouts Women of Distinction Award (2010).

    Through her influential role in the community, Judy brings the support of many with her when she takes on a cause. She strengthens our community through bringing resources, expertise and connections to efforts that she supports, thus exponentially increasing her impact. Judy is an inspiring and thoughtful leader in addressing community needs.

    The Tocqueville Society was founded by United Way of America in 1972 to honor persons who achieve high levels of personal giving. This society exists in the Midlands due to the generosity of business and community leaders who demonstrate their commitment to their community.
