Building a UK Foundation for the Transformative Enhancement ofResearch and Innovation
Social science research is on the verge of being transformed ... in a way even more fundamental than research in the physical and life sciences.
...the ability to capture vast amounts of data on human interactions in a manner unimaginable from traditional survey data and related processes should, in the near term, transform social science research.
Probably the most important impact is the way in which the e-Science investments have situated social scientists to respond to the ESRC grand challenges.
The impact of social science on both economic and social policy could be transformed as a result of new abilities to collect and analyse real-time data in a far more granular fashion than from survey data.
The social science community should also be encouraged to contribute more to deeper understanding of more principled ways to design effective virtual research environments, collaboratories, ....

The OeSS recently organised a pair of events as part of the culmination of the project
•12th March, an academic symposium on SOCIAL SCIENCE AND DIGITAL RESEARCH: INTERDISCIPLINARY INSIGHTS will bring together researchers interested in understanding how e-research has influenced the foci, quality, and significance of research.
•13th March, a policy forum on DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH: A FORUM FOR POLICY AND PRACTICE will focus on understanding the adjustments to policy and practice that must occur for the potential of e-research to be more fully realized.
