YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY
Are these results what you were expecting?
What does it do for your professional image?
According to Business Week,
87%of headhunters use Google and social networks to make decisions about
candidates
75%of recruiters have
eliminated candidates based on what a search
revealed
How would you feel knowing that a job application of yours was turned down because of something you said or posted ten years ago?
WHAT CAN PEOPLE TELL JUST BY A SIMPLE SEARCH?
“SEE SOCIAL MEDIA AS A DIALOGUE, NOT A MONOLOGUE…”
There are many pitfalls when using social media…
You could get disciplined or fired for various reasons…
Or have a permanent online presence for the rest of your life and beyond
DO A CLEAN-UP
Tighten your privacy settings. Keep in mind that it does not protect you from someone taking a snapshot of your posts. See https://library.adu.edu/sites/default/files/eagle_eye/september13.pdf
Untag yourself from – or delete - any photos which may put you in a bad light. You can go even further and ask people to remove bad photos.
Your opinions are also important – censor any blogs and posts you may have put up
PLAN YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
Decide which social media profiles – if any – you are going to use for professional purposes.
• LinkedIn is good for professional connections and job searches
• Twitter is good for connecting with like-minded people
Does your email address, or Twitter handle have a professional name? See http://www.thefrisky.com/2013-01-31/meet-the-worlds-most-idiotic-teacher-carly-mckinney-nsfw/
1. Read 2 or more articles (next slide) • Regarding the people implicated, what could they have done to avoid
these situations?• Should censorship be taught at Primary level, or should it be seen as
common sense? Provide a reason for your answer.
2. How should a lack of professionalism online be treated?
3. What is your understanding of Digital Professionalism?
4. As a student (and future health professional), how would you ensure a pristine online identity?
