GlaxoSmithKline From its appointment of two separate Chief Digital Officers to its $300 million-dollar investment in 23andMe, GSK has shown its commitment to healthcare innovation, particularly in the consumer health arena.

Novartis Novartis is taking its scouting strategy seriously—the Biome project promises to provide a huge boost to the start-up ecosystem. This is unsurprising, as the company’s CEO Vas Narasimhan is a long-time advocate of digital health with a history of promoting health tech innovation.

Bayer Bayer, too, is going out of its way not only to transform internally, but to give a leg up to digital health companies through its G4A (formerly ‘Grants4Apps’) program. With a focus on developing longer term partnerships and speeding up adoption of innovative solutions, the program is emblematic of big pharma’s digital journey.

Sanofi Having formed its 5-pillar digital strategy in 2016, Sanofi has spent the last few years following through. Johnson & Johnson In January of this year Johnson & Johnson announced its partnership with Apple to help develop the new apple watch, a move which signalled the pharmaceutical giant’s growing interest in the possibilities of partnerships between industry leaders.`

Eli Lilly Over the last couple of years Eli Lilly has made deeper and deeper inroads into the digital health ecosystem, forming collaborative partnerships with numerous leading healthcare stakeholders, including Evidian for mHealth data access, and IPO-ready Livongo for diabetes studies. Moreover, David A. Ricks, the company’s CEO, has publicly made clear that he, and by extension the organisation, consider digital to have a central role in empowering consumers and patients.

Pfizer Another pharma leader that’s seen fit to centralise its digital function under a Chief Digital Officer, Pfizer is also reaching out to early stage innovators through its Heathcare Hub and is also making providers a part of its strategy, recently partnering with Ochsner Health System to develop tools for use in clinical trials.

Merck & Co Merck & Co has been making big strides in digital health, and not only in its traditional markets, announcing in January of this year a strategic collaboration with Tencent to develop digital healthcare platforms in China. Active also in the app space with its map4health platform and in the innovation space with the MSD Innovation Factory.

Prudential Asia’s leading medical insurer, Prudential has made a name for itself in the ecosystem through collaborative partnerships with digital health start-ups including Babylon Health and Tictrac. More recently it has also launched its own app, ‘Pulse by Prudential’,

designed to further enhance its consumer-focused health strategy.

CVS While CVS’s agreement to fund and reimburse the Sleepio app has done the rounds in the media of late, the insurance giant has been moving in this direction for a number of years—back in 2015, for example, it launched digital tools to improve adherence. Today it’s considered one of the top two threats to traditional modes of healthcare delivery, according to a recent Kaufman Hall survey.

AIA Group Another payer with a multi-faceted digital health strategy, AIA Group has collaborated with telecommunications stakeholders like Singtel, service companies like Medix, and innovator companies like WeDoctor.

Humana Last year was a big one for Humana’s digital strategy—from its appointment of a Chief Digital Officer and the development of its ‘Studio H’ innovation hub in Boston to a new ‘Digital Health and Analytics’, the organisation made clear its ambitions to transform its offering and capabilities.

Anthem Anthem’s moves have been quiet, but nonetheless significant. While continuing to grow its own online and digital offerings, in 2018 it officially partnered with doc.ai, a blockchain platform which detects allergy patterns, and appointed a Google Veteran to run its AI department. So far in 2019 it joined the Stanford University’s AI for Health program as a founding member.

Vitality Vitality’s strategy of encouraging of healthy lifestyles has achieved a significant measure of success, with its Apple Watch incentive program resulted in a 34% increase in physical activity across 400,000 people. It’s also made moves into the telehealth arena, launching the Vitality GP app in collaboration with Square Health.

AXA Digital health is fast becoming a staple of AXA’s offering. In October of 2018 it rolled out its Global Care on Demand service across Europe, which offers multi-lingual doctors 24 hours a day. It has also partnered with the EU-funded eHealth Hub to source European digital health companies focused on nutrition and smoking cessation, and is supporting innovators through its digital health fund, AXA Next.

UnitedHealth Considered by US providers to be one of the two biggest dangers to traditional modes of healthcare delivery alongside CVS, UnitedHealth has proven itself a leader in uptake and innovation, most recently through a high-profile acquisition of digital health network PatientsLikeMe.

Highmark Health Designed to identify and commercialise promising innovators, Highmark Health’s VITAL Innovation Program certainly deserves a place in this list. The company has additionally teamed up with Sharecare and Dr Oz as a part of an initiative to enhance its offering through digital health.

Cigna Following its 2017 acquisition of digital health software provider Brighter, Cigna doubled down in 2018 by ploughing $250 million into a new healthcare innovation fund, Cigna Ventures. A couple of months later, the insurer moved to further develop its maternity offering through a partnership with app developer Wildflower Health.

Google Google’s forays into healthcare are complex and various. The tech giant’s DeepMind programme has collaborated with the US Department of Veteran Affairs to use data for an AI healthcare initiative, partnered with Sanofi to set up a Virtual Innovation Lab, and even appointed a former provider CEO help organise and optimise its numerous ventures.

Apple When Amazon acquired Pillpack, it certainly caused a stir, but the tech giant’s strategy of going directly to insurers has caused even more of a controversy as this would by-pass the pharmacy benefit managers. Whether or not Amazon continues to double down on this strategy, they have already demonstrated that they will have the same disruptive impact in health as they have in other industries.

Facebook With a larger market share than any social media platform, Facebook has access to vast quantities of information directly or indirectly related to health. It’s entry into healthcare has been more tentative than those of their Big Tech peers, but it has made several interesting moves in the suicide space and blood donation spaces.

Microsoft Like Facebook, Microsoft’s healthcare innovations have been quieter than those of Google, Amazon and Apple. Nonetheless, it has launched hardware initiatives in the form of the Band and leveraged this to move into medical R&D,

as well as approached cloud, AI and genomics.

IBM The 2015 Watson Health programme had been in the making since 2015 and established IBM’s ambitious entrant into the healthcare market. With its focus on AI and analytics, the tech company is doing some of the most interesting health data work out there.

Intel Intel has done some industry leading work across multiple areas of healthcare, from genomic sequencing through to clinical trial transformation and data science. Like their big tech peers, health data is playing a key role in its offering.

Dell With its primary health offering being healthcare IT Transformation, Dell is providing solutions ranging from infrastructure efficiency, to cloud, to data security, rapidly transitioning to become an entrant into the big data economy.

HP Inc. The clinician focused healthcare portfolio of HP has developed solutions for integrating provider workflows, securing health data, and developing greater connectivity between patients and doctors, whilst also establishing itself as a leading big data analytics player.

Boston Scientific One of the most digitally active of the big medical device manufacturers, Boston Scientific is engaging digital health innovators through its Connected Patient Challenge and has also partnered with Accenture to develop a cloud-based and data-driven solution that will improve patient experience and cut costs for hospitals.

Abbott Leading MedTech company Abbott doubled down on digital health in early 2019 by developing a collaborative partnership with NovoNordisk, integrating data from the Nordic Pharma company’s insulin pens with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre system and its associated mobile app and cloud-based system.

Fresenius The Israeli digital health ecosystem has been of recent interest to Fresenius—since the end of 2018 the medical device company has been investing in the Nephrology Patient Computer File, a database of dialysis patients.

Cardinal Health With its 2016 acquisition of TelePharm, an Iowa-based telemedicine start-up, and more recent revamp of its e-commerce platform based on consumer feedback, Cardinal Health are clearly keen to show that they are moving with the times.
