—21 WELCOMEWELCOMEDear student,

In a rapidly changing world we need to be able to anti cipate the next digital innovations. We won’t know exactly what will change the way we work, think and live, but we can be prepared for it with the right inno-vative mindset.

Come find the sweet spot where design meets technical know-how and become unstoppable; or in other words, become a Deviner. Someone who is able to reflect, research, design and develop for (future) digital products.

We have a challenging program set up for you, which in return will require a serious commitment. During your studies you will use the design-thinking methodol-ogy to work on wicked problems. Your creative brain will find the right solutions through design and in techno-logy. A critical mindset will help you to foresee the impact of disruptive technologies that will shape our world and our interactions.

We realise that choosing the right program is only the tip of the iceberg and choosing for an educa-tion abroad can be quite overwhelming. To help you make the most informed decision and envision your new potential student life at Devine, we have created this student guide to assist you every step of the way. We know that settling in and feeling at home is just as important as academic preparation.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Wouter or Kimberly. They will be more than happy to help. With Digital Regards,

Jynse CremersAcademic Director

—21XXXXXX ABOUT DEVINEABOUT DEVINEWhat is Devine –

Digital Design & Development?

• An English taught bachelor degree• 3-year full time program (180 ECTS credits)

Digital Design & Development (Devine) was founded in September 2008 as an answer to the industry’s call for cross functional profiles: The designer who can code and the devel-oper who can design.

What is a Deviner?

Deviners are creative digital makers. They build a bridge between the code and design world and that makes them truly unique. The unusual balance in the curriculum, which focuses 50% on design and 50% on development, results in a highly versatile skill set. Research supports both skill sets to create a critical thinking Deviner creates added value to digital solutions. Students specialize in the final year and become experts in their chosen field. The immediate result? Our alumni have a 96% employment rate.

train to become more cre-ative and learn to express yourself visually; alongside this you figure out the structured language approach of coding in html and css.

Throughout the years, research facilitates your design and development and helps you pinpoint what area of a user experience needs improvement. This ensures that your final digital solutions are useful and meaningful.

In the final year you work on multidisciplinary projects on themes such as mobility, unemployment, immigra-tion, ... You get to choose a specialization and become an expert in research, design or development and refine your Devine skills. In your Bachelor’s thesis showcase your

skills with your very own specialised team before heading off to your internship.

EVENTSEVENTSANNUAL ACTIVITIES & ANNUAL ACTIVITIES &

EVENTSEVENTS• Kortrijk Creative WeekKortrijk became part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Net work (UCCN) in 2017 and has officially been recognised as a Kortrijk UNESCO design region. In response, Creative week became an annual, city wide phenomenon in which designers, entrepreneurs, students and creative civilians come together in a one week, all out extravaganza. The event

attracts spectators from all over the world. Expositions and installations pop up all over the city and showcases the next generation in creativity, design, innovation, food art and business. Devine students participated in the festivities with their own hackathon, a video mapping which covered a landmark of more than 30 meters wide and interactive installations.

• Study GroupsEvery year we form new study groups. It is the perfect opportunity for students to share knowledge, experiences and provide feedback to conquer common obstacles. Your study group will consist of both first and third year students. Forming study groups is an effec tive way to improve your

way of studying for the exams or gain valuable insights while working on your projects.

• Company VisitsStaying up to date and well con nected to the work field is important. Devine works in close collaboration with many organi sations and has a strong relationship with the digital industry.

We organise company visits so that students from the first, second and third year can witness first hand how reallife needs are met in the industry. It is a chance to meet professionals, ask questions, reflect on methods and find inspiration in their work. It also functions as an opportunity for the companies to meet a new bold generation who look at the world with fresh eyes.

In the second and third year you can go abroad on international trips to the USA and Ireland and visit companies such as AirBNB, Apple, Google, Face book, Pinterest, Stripe, ... We spend time at several digital agencies in Silicon Valley. Students are welcome to present their portfolio at Adobe headquarters.

COMPETITIONSCOMPETITIONSHACKATHONS & HACKATHONS &

COMPETITIONSCOMPETITIONSAs your skills advance, you have the opportunity to compete with other schools to present the most creative and innovative solution during several hackathons and competitions.

Here are some of the more recent accomplishments from our students

Last year our Devine students participated in e.g. ‘Hack the Future’, an annual event for students in their final year in Belgium with over 300 contestants

organised by Cronos Group. Our students won the first prize in the UX Category and the Geolocation category. We were a close second for the Digital Product Design category.

In 2018 a group of four Devine students won first prize in the Adobe Creative Jam organised by University College Eindhoven (Netherlands).

In october 2019 six students got featured on Smashing Design website for the monthly calendar challenge.

In the previous two years 5 students became semi finalists in the international Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA). A competition with more than 5000 participants every year.

There are plenty of opportunities to join other hackathons and competitions. Deviners have had the time to shine at e.g. the Think Pink Hackathon, Apps for Ghent, the K-totem competition, CTRL – ALT – Deloitte Hack, Bring your own beamer, Summerschool of Code, ...

—21CURRICULUMCURRICULUM CURRICULUMCURRICULUMThe three pillars of Devine

As a Deviner, you use your design, development and research skills to (re)shape the future of digital experiences. These different skills form the pillars of the Devine curriculum. At the start of your student career you expand your knowledge and apply your design, development and research skills in numerous challenges. As you reach your final year you will be ready to go in depth, work on real-life client briefs and become an expert in a field of your choice.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Knowledge is treasure but practice is the key to success. ‘Integra-tion’ is a module that focuses on combining these three pillars. The individual skills you’ve learnt across the three different pillars are brought into effective action. Design, development and research are applied in your very own creations which ensures that intricate theory is practiced until eventually it can be performed without a second thought.

—21 CURRICULUMCURRICULUM“He who designs learns to

look at usual things with unusual eyes.” Being able to translate the world into your own visual creations is the very first step you take in the design module. Learn how to master design tools from the Adobe Creative Suite. Design-ing alters the way you approach challenges. This boost in creativity is irreversible and the ability to think conceptually will inspire original designs for years to come.

Creativity isn’t just for the talented. In your first year you pick up brainstorming techniques to elevate your own natural abilities to create fresh ideas. You acquaint yourself with designers in the field and use this inspiration to experi-ment with the basics of typography, visuals and composition.

As a Deviner you go beyond digital limitations and broaden your horizons with trips to art galleries, familiarise you with art history and practicing drawing techniques. Additionally, you learn to communicate visually using the art of storytelling to captivate your audience.

In the 2nd year you are introduced to the needs of clients and customers and incorporate them in the design process. You fluently translate a brief and determine what content should be displayed at which time to cater to your target audience.

Simultaneously with the development course, you gain the ability to design for a wide array of screen sizes. Touchscreens provide new design challenges but you manage to create a consistent experience across the line. Digital design becomes a stepping stone to explore design thinking, design systems and the diverse range of platforms. Congratulations, you are not merely a web designer but well on your way to becoming a future-proof digital product designer.

In Motion classes you add delight to your designs. This (motion) design module will plunge you into the basics of After Effects and allow you to create modern motion design and expressive animations that will move your audience into action. There is more to it than meets the eye: ideation, planning,

creating storyboards, styles-frames... Details such as the

By choosing the expert in design you immerse yourself fully in the world of visual design. You focus on selecting a single design skill and go to infinity and beyond to master your craft. A deep understanding is formed that design holds the power to draw attention and enact positive change in response to social issues around the world. You will be leading your own design project with a personal coach offering you support and assistance along the way to help you achieve your desired goals.

In the meantime, Cinema4D will be put on your radar and you’ll delve into the complex world of of 3d animation to become familiar with texturing, lighting and rendering a project. You are encouraged to visit expert talks that relate to your field of expertise. At the end of the year a panel of external judges from the industry will review your final work.

—21CURRICULUMCURRICULUM In development you train

yourself in problem-solv-ing thinking using different programming languages. In the first year we apply the princi-ple of pair programming. This means you work side by side with one of your classmates with the major benefit that you can review each other’s work, break down potential barriers and ultimately achieve a higher quality of code. You start by defining the structure of your site in HTML, then by shaping it in CSS to finally adding interactivity via JavaScript. Next we focus on building web applications that run a database. After completing your first year of Devine, you’ll be able to create your own social network.

During the second year of development we factor in the different types of devices you can develop a website or app for. You learn how to build responsive websites, ensuring that your website has a fluid and flexible layout which adjusts according to screen size so your creation looks perfect on any device.

It will gradually become important to utilise the right tools and implement techniques to help you manage your increasingly more complex projects. Effective teamwork is key.

In the final development class of your 2nd year, you are build-ing for the next-generation of user interfaces. The use of touch, voice and gestures are only the tip of the iceberg. Together we explore the landscape to create high-performance and user-friendly interfaces for web applications and let them communicate with a data service. You learn how to quickly create prototypes and then test them with your users.

In the final year of development, you build physical installations for the first time. With the knowledge you have obtained over the years, you experiment to the fullest extent using Arduinos, WebG, Machine Learning and real time communication. These installations could be featured on festivals or in musea. Utilise your programming knowledge to create a real-life experience. This can range from anything such as an action-packed game to a visual show via light

projections on buildings.

do lies in the ability to crit-ically assess what people truly need. In the research module you partake in active workshops to learn how to place yourself in the shoes of the end user. The aim is to create value by observing people, analysing what they do and ultimately communicating your findings in a paper which includes user journey maps, content matrix, flowcharts, and wireframes. The end result is a detailed plan of a digital product.

Seek to improve your knowledge in the second year and choose a self-imposed topic or challenge. Learn how to formulate a strong research question to assist you in your quest. This helps you cast a critical eye over society and

discover opportunities for digital innovation. Step into the world to gather first hand data. Can you discover the hidden patterns and themes emerging from your dataset? Your findings will be directly applicable when forming your own design principles.

It is important to understand the ethical boundaries when per-forming any type of research. We need to be mindful that there can be no harm done based on our research and decisions, even indi-rectly. Additionally, strengthen your skills in creating flowcharts and transform your (paper) wireframes into interactive prototypes.

Can’t get enough of research? Wonderful, don’t hesitate to take the expert course in your final year and initiate your personal research project. A mentor personally guides you in your individual exploration and investigation.

Integration

We believe in giving back to the community and building positive experiences via the creativity and innovations from the student work. That’s why at the end of each semester, you have the opportunity to combine the knowledge and skills learnt in the different modules. You get challenged by one large project that includes real-life cases from the cultural, commercial and public sectors with the goal to think about how you can communicate information, create awareness or perhaps even change behavior.

You think in a holistic way about the positive added value and sustainability of digital interaction as solutions

for the wicked problems in our society. How will you develop digital products, services or systems that meet the ever-changing expectations of your target group?

Internship

This experience is by far the cherry on top and a highlight for each Deviner in their third year. It is the students’ chance to get real-life experience, work for an established company, and to be mentored by someone who is active in the industry.

It is with great pride that we can offer our students an exten-sive list of companies who are eager to recruit Deviners. Only recently, Facebook (London) traveled down to our campus to hand pick their very own student intern.

The average ratio of interested companies to students is 3-1. You have absolute job security when graduating from Devine. 85% Of the students receive a direct job offer upon completion of or even during their internship.
