Digital Citizenship Starter Kit

Use Common Sense and Remind to help encourage safe digital communication with your students & their families

Dear Educators,As more and more devices make their way into classrooms around the world, we need to reinforce safe, responsible, and respectful behavior — online and off. We recognize all that you do, and to echo one of your fellow superheroes, “With power comes great responsibility.” At Common Sense, we are dedicated to improving the lives of kids and empowering schools and families to help kids harness the potential of technology for learning and life.

Knowing the hurdles around teacher-student-parent communication, we’ve partnered with Remind, a tool focused on helping teachers connect instantly with their classes on mobile devices. With Remind, teachers can send quick, one-way Announcements directly to students or parents’ phones, or engage in simple, safe, two-way Chat conversations with individual subscribers. Together, we’ve designed a week’s worth of content, activities, and tips to help you familiarize parents and students with two-way messaging on Remind and to communicate the importance of “digital citizenship.”

In this packet, you will find an action plan broken down by grade bands: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. We suggest that you (1) teach the recommended Common Sense lesson or activity, (2) use Remind to follow up with an activity for students, and (3) provide parents with tips as well. Again, this weeklong action plan will help introduce Remind’s new two-way Chat feature to your students and their families, while reinforcing good “digital citizenship” behaviors. Feel free to modify as needed as you know your students best, but enjoy these free resources from Remind and Common Sense Education. Thanks for using Remind to build meaningful relationships with your students and parents and for supporting positive digital citizenship practices in the process.
