How to Become

a Great Digital Citizen

(…in One Easy Lessonin February 2015

at Faith Lutheran College)

This Lesson is NOT about

…Making RULES

Listing

CONSEQUENCES

SCARING you

or even BORING you

(…until you drool)

It’s all about

LEARNING and

making you THINK

The Worst Teacher Ever

DefinitionsDigital Literacy: refers to the knowledge, skills, and

behaviours used in a broad range of digital devices

such as smartphones, tablets and laptops

Digital Citizenship: is the concept of educating students

about how to use technology appropriately. This

involves not misusing it to disadvantage others.

Cyber Safety: is the ability to act in a safe and

responsible manner on the Internet. These behaviours

protect your personal information and reputation (and

the reputation of others.)

You Live In Two Worlds

6

BUT

…these two

worlds are

rapidly

becoming one

Statistics

7

How true are these statistics of you?

How “Big” is the Internet?

• 759 Million - Total number of websites

on the Web

• 510 Million - Total number of Live

websites (active)

• 103 Million - Websites added during

the year i.e 2013

14.3 Trillion Webpages, live on the

Internet

8

• Over 1 Yotta-byte - Total data stored on the

Internet (Includes almost everything).

1 Yotta-byte =

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Bytes!

What Is the Internet Made

Of?

9

NOW … IT’S TIME TO

THINK

10

… but not

about giant

donuts!

When There’s No Internet at Home …

HAVE YOU EVER?

Tried to find your neighbour’s WiFi Signal

Gone out especially to access public WiFi

Visited a friend just to use their WiFi

Read a book instead because a book is just as good

Sat in a corner doing this …

Protecting Your Personal

Information

Social Media

Twitter: Over 140 million

tweets sent per day

Facebook: Over 1 billion

status updates per day

YouTube: Over

36,000 hours of film

added per day

(that’s a little over

four years!)

13

Have Your Parents …ever confiscated your phone or another device?

or, have they, at least threatened to?14

Anatomy of a BAD Post

15

How many “mistakes” can you see here?

Whatever You Post on Social

Media …is not the tiny digital

footprint of a Rainbow

Butterfly Unicorn Kitten

Instead, it’s a digital

tattoo which is all but

impossible to remove

16

T.H.I.N.K.

17

Think about your Grandma?

Do you like and love her?

CYBERBULLYING

18

According to recently gathered statistics, 463,000

Australian children were victims of cyberbullying in 2013,

and almost three quarters of these were in the age group

between 10 and 15 years. (www.nobullying.com)

In a shock to parents,

Australia has been

ranked number one for

bullying on social

networks with one in

four children bullied

online …
