The Difference between Bitmap and Vector graphics or

Object Oriented Graphics.

Vector Graphics?

• In vector graphics the objects contained in the file are being stored as mathematical equations, so-called vectors.

Bitmap Graphics?

• Bitmaps store the image data as so-called 'pixels' [short for 'picture element'].

Vector Graphic Advantages

• Plain text files, and the compression is much more efficient than in bitmaps, because it is not necessary to store each pixel

• Only the mathematical description of the object

Bitmap Graphic Advantages

• The colour information is either being stored in a colour palette, or together with each pixel.

•Clip art A catchall term for several types

of non-photographic graphic images .

•Pixels Individual tiny dots of light which

display colours, images and text on a screen. Most images and font sizes used in websites are measured in pixels.

•Resolution For monitors, resolution is the

maximum number of displayable pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions. For printers, resolution is the maximum number of pixels per inch.

•Colour depth The number of distinct colours

that can be represented by a piece of hardware or software.
