With beautiful weather and great food, you couldn’t ask for a better way to enjoy the 2007 DMS Employee Appreciation Picnic
held November 7 behind the DMS buildings in the Capital Circle Office Center in Tallahassee. The executive staff served
hamburgers and hotdogs and terrific dessert dishes, while employees got to know each other better. Plus, there was a little
friendly competition among employees for the best dessert recipe. The entries ranged from chocolate buckeyes to strawberry
cakes, but the recipe that topped them all went to Lila Dyer for her delicious Leroy Bars. Her award-winning dessert is this
month’s “Recipe of the Month.” Second place went to Fredrick Ross (and his talented wife) for the Peanut Delight and third
place went to Tommy Wagner for his Mississippi Mud Cake. A raffle gave employees the opportunity to win gift certificates, gas
cards and other great prizes. Thanks to our picnic committee: Sarah Heavener Brandi TantonLynda Jordan Donna SmithDenise Wright Laura CutchenTerry Bratcher Betty McGovernBe Whitfield

This is an interesting time for us at DMs. We conducted our top down review of our divisions here and discovered so many pockets of strong and wonderful things being done. It also catches us at a time of normal fluctuation in the economy which forces us to tighten our belts once again. While there is always room for improvement, I believe DMs employees give it their all in everything. as we look ahead to further reduce operations it requires us to create a “stop doing list.” Thank you for working with your department heads to find continued efficiencies in the way we do business - without hindering our ability to serve customers.
What a terrific employee appreciation picnic! I enjoyed breaking bread with you on such a beautiful day. I want to thank my leadership team for pulling it together; their dedication is evident in what they do on a daily basis. and as we approach Thanksgiving this week, I want each of you to know how very thankful I am to serve as your secretary at DMs. This is a tremendous organization with much to be proud of and I am honored to be here.
With many thanks,

Thursday, November 8, 96 DMS employees,
vendors and friends gathered at SouthWood
Golf Club to take part in the 2007 FSECC DMS
Golf Tournament. It featured a shotgun start,
best-ball format and incredible weather. In spite
of a few errant tee shots and some less than
stellar putting, everyone had a great time. The
winners of the tournament were the team of
Ken Granger, Charles Covington, Doug Darling
and David Faulkenberry. Second place went to
Van Champion, Bond Thornton, Keith Vause and
Jim Zumbrunn, and third place went to Robert
Vos, Jay Waller, Tim Perkins and Patrick Bauer
(Bearing Point).
The biggest news of all was that the tournament
raised $5,125 for the FSECC, more than
doubling last year’s total, even though there were
just four more players! Thanks to the sponsors
for their contributions and all the golfers for
their support!
And a special thank you to Dani O’Quinn and
Brandi Tanton for their hard work in putting
together such a successful and enjoyable
tournament!

dms happeningsFSECCHave you made a contribution to the Florida State Employees’ Charitable Campaign (FSECC) yet? This is the only state-sanctioned charity drive among state employees in the workplace and benefits our community. Funds are given to area charities ranging from the American Red Cross to the Tallahassee YMCA. Each year, you generously contribute more than $4.9 million to your favorite charities through the FSECC. Keep in mind that all donations are voluntary and tax deductible.
Last year, DMS received three top awards for our generosity in providing a future of hope and opportunity for those in need.
This year’s FSEC Campaign runs from September 1 through December 1. Our goal this year is $74,357.

Energy Efficient Tips
In July, Governor Crist joined a number of national and local leaders calling on state government to reduce its carbon footprint. How can we, as employees and citizens of this great state, help out in our own way? Here are a handful of energy efficient tips for employees that deal with car maintenance:
Use the grade of motor oil recommended by your car’s manufacturer. Using the wrong oil can lower your gasoline mileage by one to two percent.
Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3 percent.
Get regular engine tune-ups and car maintenance checks to avoid fuel economy problems due to worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid or transmission problems.
Replace clogged air filters to improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent and protect your engine.
Combine errands into one trip. Several short trips, each taken from a cold start, can use twice as much fuel as one long trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.
Long-term savings tip: Consider buying a highly fuel-efficient vehicle. A hybrid vehicle or an alternative fuel vehicle could save you a lot of gas at the pump and help the environment.
Remember, every little bit helps. All of us can make a big difference in helping to protect our state.
It’s PropertyInventory Time!
That’s right, it’s property inventory time here at DMS. Now through January, property custodian delegates (CD) will inventory department property assets. They’ll
scan the bar codes on each piece of equipment, so don’t be scared if you hear a lot of beeping in your area. Please allow them to scan your equipment when they drop by - it only takes a minute!
Did you know that you have your very own CD? You can find out who they are by visiting the new Property Asset Management (PAM) Web site at dms.MyFlorida.com/pam. Look for the “List of Custodian Delegates” link, locate your organization code and you’ll have indentified your very own CD!
Do you know your responsibilities as an employee as it relates to property assets? You can find out by reviewing the PAM policies and procedures on the PAM Web site. Just open each document and do a search for “employee.” Your role in these policies and procedures are an automatic part of your job responsibilities.
Mix nuts, cake mix, and one egg in a bowl then pour in melted butter. Mix well until it shapes into a large dough ball. Press firmly into bottom of 9” x 13” baking pan.
Put sugar, cream cheese and four remaining eggs into a bowl. Beat with a mixer until smooth and creamy (no lumps). Pour over cake mixture.
Bake for one hour at 325 degrees if you’re using a glass baking dish or at 350 degrees if using a metal baking pan. Bake more if needed until golden brown. Cool completely, for 1-2 hours. Slice into bite-size bars - makes approximately 40 bars.

The DMS Stars Behind the CameraLong before the lights, cameras and action began rolling in Tallahassee for
the HBO feature film “Recount,” our own Sherrie Routt worked tirelessly to coordinate locations, parking, security and a number of other logistical details key to the film’s success. Sherrie works in the Division of Real Estate and Management, Operations and Maintenance Bureau and is responsible for the coordination and approval of the use of DMS-managed property. Her duties include special events at the capitol, other DMS buildings and even the filming of a major motion picture. Her co-stars in the behind-the-scenes events include Bob McLaughlin, capitol building manager, and Nancy Gebhart from Parking Services. Hats off to our stars behind the camera and to everyone else who helped make the event a success.

Halfway There for MyFloridaNetThe MyFloridaNet team at CITS have been busy and productive over the last six months. They successfully reached the halfway point of migrating customers to MyFloridaNet on budget. This picture features all the CITS employees and the three vendors who have helped with the migration: AT&T, Embarq and Hayes. With increased attention focused on customer service and tighter budgets, kudos to the MyFloridaNet team for excelling in both areas!

SHOUT OUTSKudos to the MyFloridaNet team for their
implementation of the Palm Beach County Health
Department to the new data network! They
received a thank you letter for a very speedy and
professional job well done. The project started at
the end of August with 16 sites to be converted

DMS employees involved were extremely helpful
which led to a smooth implementation.
Way to go team!
Renee Randal, with the Office of Maintenance,
thanked Chuck Beall for always helping when
and where he’s needed. In fact, many times he
assisted her in getting information that was
outside his area, especially when she was faced
with road blocks. She appreciates his assistance
and professionalism, and looks forward to
working with Chuck on future projects. Way
to go Chuck!
Donna Smith received a certificate of achievement from the Emergency Management Institute (a division of
FEMA), recognizing completion of their comprehensive emergency management training. Donna is a long-time
disaster recovery volunteer, so the combination of her experience and extensive training certainly qualifies
Donna as an extremely valuable resource for our department and for the citizens of Florida. Donna, thank you
for your efforts above and beyond your assigned responsibilities, and congratulations on this accomplishment!
We truly appreciate your commitment and service.

DMS authorized administrators who provide
excellent service to all DMS wireless customers.
Thank you for all that you do to make life easier
for your colleagues at DMS!!
The DMS Application Development team has developed a Web browser-based system for the Bureau of
Private Prison Monitoring. This system allows the prison contract managers at each facility to easily and
quickly record daily incidents, track positions and record program accountability information. This system
replaced a very manual and paper intense process. Thanks to this automation, the contract managers
and their management can spend less time on compiling, formatting and printing reports and more time
performing their core duties. JD Solie, Bureau Chief of Private Prison Monitoring thanked the team: “Dan
Pelletier, James Akers, Anthony Roeder and Sarah Hamilton have been extremely helpful, professional and a
pleasure to work with. Their dedication and hard work will result in a system that will be a tremendous asset
to the bureau.”
