Key stage 3 students welcomed a wide range of visitors to celebrate religious and cultural diversity of our community and the wider society.

The week actually began on Friday 26 January when Year 9 watched the testimony from Janine Webber BEM, who is a Holocaust survivor. As a school we feel it is important to commemorate National Holocaust Memorial day, taking the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of tolerance and understanding, as well as pay our respects to those who suffered discrimination.

Janine was born in Lvov in Poland. After the Nazis invaded, she and her family were forced to leave their home. During a raid, her father was shot and members of her family were taken to extermination camps. Janine was then moved to a ghetto where her mother died of typhus. Later, Janine went into hiding, living in an underground hole until her aunt secured false papers for her. This incredible testimony encapsulated the message of Diversity Week, as a society we must recognise and respect people’s differences.

Year 9 then spent the week in the art department working on an expressive arts project and incorporating what they felt the ‘important message’ was about how we should treat others.

There were workshops from the Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Baha’, Salvation Army and Humanist communities that took place at the school. In addition, various charities came in to raise awareness of the economic and social struggles there are within our society. Bridgnorth Youth Workers ran a ‘Reflect Day’ where the Year 7 students hadthe opportunity to think about how to overcome challenges in life, how to deal with problems and think deeper about what makes something valuable. The Bully4Uproduction for Year 8’s, followed up with anti-bullying workshops and tackled the impact and effects of bullying on the individual. They had the opportunity to talk about what bullying is, what forms it can take and how to best challenge this issue. (Continued on Page 2)

FENCING NEWS

Moya Ralph Jagger, Year 8 Athens 3, entered into the Midlands Championship for fencing by her coach Ismay Cowans last Sunday (4 February). Moya came THIRD and has therefore qualified for the National Championships!

What's amazing is that this was the first competition Moya has agreed to enter as she didn't think she was good enough! Thank goodness her coach pushed her into it!

Moya trains at the Much Wenlock Fencing Club on Thursday evenings which takes place in our own Sportshall.

Please wish her good luck in the nationals!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION

A reminder of Duke of Edinburgh Expedition training in the next few weeks:

The next meeting for Group 2 is on Tuesday 13 February 2018.The next meeting for Group 1 is on Tuesday 27 February 2018

Participants who miss training meetings run the risk of not being allowed to take part in the expedition for safety reasons.

Participants need to bring their information booklets to the meetings.

DIVERSITY WEEK - CONTINUED

There will be a showcase evening after half term on all of the activities done during Diversity Week. We would like to invite students, staff and parents to this event, which will give us all the opportunity to recognise and celebrate all the wonderful work completed by our students.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Friends of William Brookes and School fund committee as without their support this magical week would not have been possible.

Please read a student written article on page 4 about their experience with Tammy the Guide Dog and her owner Julie Southgate.

TAMMY THE GUIDE DOG

whilst it is at work. Not only can this be off putting for the dog, it can also be scary for the owner and potentially dangerous. Remember to always ask before fussing the dog! If the dog is wearing a white chest plate, it means its fully trained and it shouldn’t be stroked unless the owner has given permission.

Guide Dogs for the Blind are an amazing charity who provide vital support for those in need. Because they are a non-governmentally funded charity, they rely on public donations to allow them to continually and successfully help blind people. You can donate online or through the phone/email. For more information, go to their website at: https://www.guidedogs.org.uk/

We loved meeting Julie and Tammy!

Article by: Charlotte Harrison B7, Olivia Richie B9 & Libby Firmstone B3.

Julie Southgate explained to us that in 2012 she was registered blind at the age of 50 due to type one diabetes; what our eyes can see at 60 feet is what Julie can see at 6 feet. Julie became extremely isolated and insecure; she lost her confidence…

This all changed when Tammy came along. Tammy the guide dog gave Julie a ‘new lease of confidence’ and allowed her to regain her life. Julie got Tammy through a charity called guide dogs for the blind. This charity is not governmentally funded and each dog costs £55,000. Julie says that Tammy ‘halves her stress level’.

People often misunderstand that guide dogs are working dogs: encouraging them to fuss the dog

YEAR 8 DANCE

A huge well done to the Year 8 Dance classes on this half term rotation in Performing Arts. This is the first rotation this academic year where ALL students have given a fantastic performance worthy of ‘secure’ or higher.

For their second unit this year the students have all been learning different styles in ‘Dance Through the Decades’ from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. We have discussed how the social and political climate of each decade affected the art form and stylised the Charleston, the Jive, Swing Dance, Disco Fever and many other single ‘Dance Crazes’. A super well done to all of you! Keeeeeeeeeeeep dancing!

SHROPSHIRE SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday we took a small but talented group of runners to the Shropshire Schools Cross Country Championships in Oswestry. In extremely muddy conditions we had some excellent results.Congratulations to Aimee Craven who achieved a great 23rd place and Izzy Price who was awesome and came 1st.

In the Year 7 boys Joe Ritson and Alfie Cox both had great runs to achieve 10th and 14th respectively. In the Year 8 & 9 girls, Phoebe Barker achieved 14th, Hannah Insley 33rd, Eva Diack 34th and Hope Lewis 36th achieved 5th team position.

In the Year 10 & 11 girls, both Manali Ware (10th) and Elle Humphries (12th) had excellent runs. And in the Year 10 & 11 boys, Louix Tziortzis-Foskett achieved a great 7th position. Well done everyone!
