From the Head of Primary School

As I am writing this message, our PADIA core group and volunteers are busy preparing the quad for the Winter Souq. Earlier, I overheard children practising their songs for the Winter Concert. Today is Thanksgiving in the US. Our seasonal celebrations draw near yet Years 4, 5 and 6 have just completed their Language, Maths and Science International Benchmark Tests, an important battery of internationally recognised assessments. Such is the nature of our international school and this is reflected in our IB Learner Profiles.

The ten Learner Profiles are not just for the awards in class assemblies - they are an important part of all we do and are at DIA. Right now, with so much going on in different areas of our school, the 'Balanced' profile seems to be immediately relevant but equally, 'Open Minded' could be applied to the children for whom Christmas is not an important part of the year but they understand why it is significant for some of their friends. At this time of year, many children have been taking action by 'Caring' about and helping others - certainly those who ran stands during our recent 'Action Day' have. A number of our teachers have been 'Risk Takers' by initiating the Journey of Hope cycle ride from Fujeirah to Abu Dhabi via all 7 emirates. This all came about through Ms. Samantha being 'Reflective' after her hospitalisation earlier in the year.

Later today, our Year 6 students will be hosting their Science Fair and sharing their learning with other students and our parent visitors. They will be demonstrating how 'Knowledgeable' they are, showing they have been 'Inquirers' and scientific 'Thinkers'. They will need to be good 'Communicators' to share this information and respond to questions from their visitors.

And we know that they will be 'Principled' in the way they conduct themselves throughout all of these activities because that is one of the most frequent observations made by visitors to our school.

All this in the space of one day....... Tim Richardson Head of Primary School

ANTI- BULLYING WEEK IN YEAR 1AW

We decided to make a poster for the whole school. We painted and decorated this to show everyone how we feel about bullying. We are the butterflies and we fly high above the bees. The butterflies are the nice, kind caring children that are in DIA. We have decided that there are no bees in DIA. We make sure that we all have friends and treat each other as we ourselves would like to be treated. Check out our poster in the front of the Primary School.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK IN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Anti-Bullying Week is an annual worldwide event in the third week in November which aims to raise awareness of bullying of children and young people, in schools and elsewhere, and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.

The Primary School Council hosted an anti-bullying event at in the quadrangle on Tuesday 17th November. All the Primary School students were invited to share their anti-bullying messages to form a collage that is proudly displayed in the quadrangle for our DIA community to see.

Some classes took their own initiative and continued to raise awareness; 1 AW worked together to create a poster, 6CC and KG 1 SM used their buddy time to discuss friendship and year 3 GP dedicated their PSHE lesson to do some activities related to anti-bullying.

ACTION DAY!

Thursday 19th November was Action day for students for year 3 to year 6. Students took ‘Action’ to raise funds for The Journey of Hope, The Give foundation and K9.

What is Action? Action is a part of who we are, it’s a part of who we want to be. Students want to make a difference; they want to make the world a better place and therefore they take Action and use their learnt skills that are holistic and transdisciplinary to implement their Action.

The students form Year 3 to Year 6 had tables with bake sales, water games and Arts and Crafts.

Well done to all the participants!

YEAR 2 CELEBRATES HOLI!

The students in Year 2 have been inquiring into a unit all about celebrations from around the world. One such celebration is Holi, a colourful event starting on the night before the actual Holi day. It starts with a bonfire where people gather, sing and dance. The next morning is a free-for-all carnival of colors, where participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and coloured water, with some carrying water guns and coloured water-filled balloons for their water fight. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders. The frolic and fight with colours occurs in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums and musical instruments, go from place to place, sing and dance. People visit family, friends and foes to throw colours on each other, laugh and chit-chat, then share Holi delicacies, food and drinks. In the evening, people dress up and visit friends and family.

Year 2 decided to put the event to the test…and try it out for themselves! The soccer field behind the school became a color war zone and the kids went wild as they threw and splashed the colors on each other…..AND the teachers!

MARCELO CERVONE’S MUSIC WORKSHOP AT DIA By Abhinaya Chandramohan, Year 11 - E

On the 29th of October, 2015, the Brazilian actor-musician Marcelo Cervone came to DIA to conduct a music workshop. Marcelo graduated from the musical theatre course at the American Musical Theatre Academy of London (AMTA) and also has a Baccalaureate in Performing Arts, which he received graduating from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Acting-wise, Marcelo acts in musicals, onscreen, and in contemporary and classical plays, currently starring as the lead role of ‘Mowgli’ in Shakespeare 4 Kidz’ 3-month international tour of ‘The Jungle Book’. Music-wise, Marcelo plays the drums, guitar, piano, bass guitar and saxophone, and he also song-writes and sings for the band, Crystal X.

Marcelo started off the music workshop at DIA with a discussion regarding pursuing the Arts after high school, as a career, encouraging students who were serious about them to go ahead and study the Arts, trying to remove the mindset that the Arts are “not serious” career options. After this discussion, the three teachers and 20 students present at the workshop moved around to form different groups, based on what instrument each played. The groups were the drummers, the guitarists and bass guitarist, the singers, the flutists, one pianist, one violist and Marcelo on the saxophone.

After everyone was comfortable with their groups and instruments, we decided to “jam” (which we learned actually stands for “Jazz After Midnight”) as an entire group of 24 people, to the song ‘Royals’ by Lorde. Marcelo first had the singers start us off by singing the song in D major. The drummers then began drumming a basic rhythm to the singing as Marcelo guided the guitarists and pianist as to what chord progression to play. As the guitarists continued with this and began experimenting with different lead notes, Marcelo encouraged the flutists and violist to follow their lead and use the chord progression to play different melodies that worked well with the singing. After everyone was fully contributing to the jam session with their instrument, Marcelo had us all increase and decrease our volumes at the same time so that we could hear how amazing it sounded when all the instruments did this at the same time and so that we could feel connected with not just the people within our own instrument groups, but also the other groups. After doing this, Marcelo had the singers all stop singing at the bridge of Royals and surprised us all by joining in with a saxophone solo as all the other instruments continued playing. After his solo, he called the singers back in for the last chorus of the song and continued playing his saxophone throughout this. Finally, to end the song, he had each instrument group gradually stop playing, with the singers stopping first, followed by his saxophone, then the flutists, the violist, then the pianist, the drummers and finally the guitarists.

Overall, it was an incredible experience to be a part of, because the jamming part of the workshop helped us all feel

connected with each other despite the fact that we had not necessarily ever interacted with each other in school

before this workshop. The advice Marcelo gave about following the Arts even if they are perceived as “unstable” and

“unreliable” career paths was also extremely helpful because it helped encourage students who are serious about the

Arts to follow what they believe in.

DIA @ DPSD MUN 2015

A group of thirteen students took part in the DPSD MUN 2015 out of which ten of them were delegates and three were Student Officers. The conference lasted for three days, it began with an opening ceremony in which there were speeches delivered by the school management staff and the Secretary General at DPSD MUN 2015. Initially, I felt comfortable while meeting the delegates of my committee since our chairs had introduced themselves to all the delegates in advance on Facebook. Also at the same time they encouraged all delegates in the committee to communicate with each other.

The first day of the conference comprised of formal debates. However, the chairs went a little easy on the new delegates as most of them were attending their first ever MUN Conference. Our chairs were extremely cooperative and considerate towards all of the delegates as it was the first day of conference. The second day of conference went eventful in my opinion. We debated on all the topics given to us and the Secretary General had visited The World Economic Forum as the Greek Finance Minister to deliver a speech on the Greek economic crisis. To release the entire day’s fatigue, all delegates of the conference were invited to

attend the Cultural Evening of DPSD MUN 2015, which was held at the Movenpick -Jumeirah Beach Residence. The event truly made us forget the hectic day we had as there was an entertaining DJ on the console who played fantastic tracks all evening and didn’t let us stay away from the dance floor for too long! To top it up, we were served a lavish buffet consisting of all cuisines to satisfy our hunger!

The last day of the conference was here, everyone was feeling super tired after that fantastic cultural evening. However, the delegates participated in debate with full enthusiasm. Towards the end, the conference was made interesting and challenging by ordering all committees to join the Crisis Committee chaired by the Secretary General.

The conference concluded with an Awards ceremony in which delegates of each committee were given awards for the ‘Best Delegate’, ‘Honourable mention’ and ‘Best Position Papers’. I won an award for the ‘Best Position Paper’ for topic two in the World Economic Forum. The DIA delegation won a total of 4 awards at the ceremony.

We would like to sincerely thank the team of the DPSD MUN 2015 for making this conference a memorable experience for the entire DIA delegation!

DELHI PRIVATE SCHOOL DUBAI MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2015 Dharkann Sainani, year 11

After weeks of research and anticipation, we boarded the bus with excitement for what the Delhi Private School Dubai Model United Nations (MUN@DPSD) 2015 would offer to our delegations of France and Bahrain and three student officers. The three-day conference saw some excellent collaborative and constructive debate, along with multiple best position paper awards from DIA’s delegates. It was an incredible learning experience for beginners, and yet another opportunity to participate for experienced delegates. Supposedly an unlucky day, Friday the 13th of November marked the beginning of the conference; an unforgettable event where new friendships were formed, and memories created.

The theme of the conference was “International Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity in the 21st Century,” directing the focus towards the role of non-state actors in several civil wars and territorial disputes; issues that are unfortunately becoming a regular phenomena in today’s world. The conference served as a cohesive platform for us

Page 10: DIA HOSTS A MAGI AL NIGHT OF MUSIdiadubai.com/media/1775/dialogue-193.pdf · primary general s hool news se ondary s hool news se ondary primary general s hool newss hool news primary

to embody the role of young diplomats in understanding the causation, consequence, and unfolding of conflict. Nearly three hundred delegates discussed a wide spectrum of issues; ranging from the situation in Yemen, to the socio-economic downturn in Greece.

Representing a nation which was not our own, allowed us to see the world through a myriad of lenses and gain new perspectives that have helped us thrive as individuals. Delegates were exposed to a platform for the expression of ideas, and a place for the exercise of leadership, public speaking, and research skills in order to formulate pragmatic solutions. As a simulation of the United Nations, the conference promoted a sense of internationalism and cooperation in discussing real world issues. It was an experience that we will carry in our hearts for years to come.

THE INNOVENTURES EDUCATION ANNUAL SWIMMING COMPETITION

The whistle blows, a sound that echoes in every swimmer’s mind as their toes follow their fingers off the block into a rush of chlorine. The swimmer can see his contenders lining up beside him, pounding at the water, he pushes his muscles so hard each breath becomes a grimace. Dubai International Academy wins.

On the 15th of November the Innoventures Education Annual Swimming Competition was held, inviting Collegiate American School, Raffles World Academy and Raffles International School to Dubai International Academy’s swim lanes. Swimmers began arriving at 1:30pm, and warmed up alongside one another; spectators flowed in and out to watch, a DJ was present 24/7 and a great commentator kept the crowds and participants up to speed. The gala flowed smoothly along ending at around 4:30pm.

This year’s competition consisted of medley relays, 50 meter fly, 50 meter backstroke, 50 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle, 100 individual medley and a 4x50 free relay to round off the afternoon.

The competition ended seemingly just as soon as it began with Dubai International Academy leading the victory with

529 points followed (in order) by Raffles World Academy with 396 points, then Raffles International School with 155

points and Collegiate American School with 103 points. 12 points were awarded to the winning school of each set of

individual races, 10 to second, 8 to third and 6 points to fourth.

The DIA Year 11 wardrobe essential is here!! The quintessential black polo!

Every year PADIA gives a special t-shirt to every student of Year 11, with the names of the entire class printed at the back. The students of year 11 de-sign their own Tee and wear it every Thursday with pride to mark the upcoming end to the MYP. This year the graduating class of 2018 has decided that they want to “Redefine Impossibilities”.

Redefining Impossibilities will open up a world of opportunities for these students. It is such a powerful and a very apt message for teenagers of this generation. They are preparing to go out into a world that is changing at a very fast pace. The only way to keep up with it, is to redefine tomorrow, what was yesterday considered impossible. We at PADIA loved the message and were very pleased with the design. We are very happy and excited to give away this polo-shirt very early, so they can wear it on many Thursdays, until they enter the DP next year. We wish them all the very best.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

800 DIA students, friends and family and 3 hours of unadulterated fun - Yes it was a night to remember!!

PADIA recently organised one of the most awaited event of the year -The PADIA Wild Wadi Night. Wild Wadi opens its doors to DIA friends and family every year in October. This year on the eve of Halloween, Wild Wadi was buzzing with screams of laughter and excitement.

The Buzz had started 2 weeks before the event, when PADIA team members began selling the tickets. Every time groups of students passed by the security foyer or the quad, and they saw a smiling PADIA team member selling tickets, they were reminded of the fun awaiting them. That immediately started of discussions among groups of students, who wanted to go and who didn’t. The little ones pestered their parents to take them and the older ones tried to convince their peers. As the D-Day came closer, tickets started selling like hotcakes, much to the delight of the PADIA team members.

Wild Wadi offers fun for all ages, especially on a special evening when the venue is shut for outsiders and open only to DIA. That means no queues and everyone can enjoy the water splashes and the slides as many times as they like.

The main purpose of organising a night at Wild Wadi, is to raise funds for PADIA events for the rest of the year. That would not have been possible if parents and students hadn’t extended their whole hearted support to the event. PADIA would like to thank each and every one who made this a night to remember!!
