Personally, I feel that this was an extremely meaningful camp for youth of

various races in Singapore, as the activities have not only taught me how to

appreciate the language, food and religion-the three most fundamental parts of

culture-of the other races; but also imbued me with leadership skills.

During the span of this four-days-three-nights camp, I built strong bonds with

my peers and through playing games and planning performances, gained

insightful knowledge about the culture of other races. For example, when

Indian food was served for dinner, all the campers were required to use theirright hands to have their meals. Had it not been for this camp, I would never

have thought of eating with my hand, after all I come from a traditional

Chinese family. I tried my best to comply but could not grasp the tactic of

eating with hands. It was then that my Indian peers told me that all I had to do

was to hold a small quantity of rice between my thumb and fingers, beforepushing the rice inside my mouth using my thumb, while being careful not to

let the food stain my palm. Frankly, I never fully grasped how to use my hands

to eat , but nevertheless, it was meaningful experience.

Besides learning more about the culture of different races, I also gained a

better understanding of leadership, and honed my leadership skills. I sincerely

believe that leaders are made and not born, thus a lot of practice is required

before one can become a true leader. During the camp, I had to mix around

with people of different backgrounds, and this provided me with an opportunityto refine my intrapersonal skills. Most importantly, I realized that I have

become more confident and daring after the camp, characteristics integral toleadership.

In conclusion, this is an experience one should not miss, and I urge all

Dunmanians to try for this camp next year, as what awaits you is an

unforgettable and enjoyable experience. As for me, I most certainly will be

    there as well.

What are some words which you would attribute to a nation? Professor Yong

    questioned the audience.

IndependenceI mused, more to myself than anyone else. By virtue of myclose proximity to the stage and perhaps the silence of the auditorium, Prof.

Yong heard my answer and presented me with a pleasant surprise. A valuable

book entitled Malaysia The Making of a Nation.

The knowledgeable professor then continued with his talk which encompassed avariety of topics, including nationhood, its roots and nationalism in South-East

Asia during the colonial period amongst others. Insights and an overview of

present day ASEAN nations such as Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, Indonesia and

Malaya were given, followed by an interesting Question & Answer session.

The talk happened to coincide with the launching of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan

Yews newly released book, Hard Truths. In light of MM Lees views on

Singapore still being a work in progress, the fact that a great nation must not

only possess a strong foundation but also a dedicated and capable population

us. The government is able to provide a state-of-the-art defence system, a

smooth economy and incredible infrastructure. However, without the people

who contribute to all of the above, they will crumble and Singapore will cease

to be what it is today. It is important that we build on our founding fathers

efforts and not take what we have for granted. Should any of us throw cautionto the wind and fail to preserve the core values and beliefs which hold

Singapore together (interreligious and interracial harmony, shared loyalty to ourcountry and sense of belonging to name a few), it will be a recipe for disaster.

I felt that the contents of MM Lees book tied in nicely with the content

covered during the lecture with regards to the topic of nationalism, and thus

the coincidence was indeed rather apt.

Hence, I extend my gratitude to Prof. Yong for the informative lecture and MM

Lee as well as the rest ofSingapores founding fathers for moulding Singapore

to her present-day condition which is a free and independent nation.

This years theme for Total Defence 2011 is "Home Keeping It Together". The

concept of Home can mean many different things to different people. It can be

the roof over our heads, the warmth of family and friends, a future we want tobuild with the people we love, or just a place in our hearts and minds when we

feel lost. Home keeps us rooted and it is the place we go back to, to find

refuge, to seek comfort and strength, to be recharged. Home is a feeling ofbelonging, whether or not you are physically here.

A class activity was implemented in conjunction with this essential day. The

song ofHome was an integral part of this activity. Students were to select

from two tasks. Firstly, using the song, the class had to think of what Home

meant to them, and come up with their own music video. Incorporation of the

key concepts of what Home meant to them enabled them to better turn such

an understanding into an engaging visual narrative. Secondly, they could chose

to rewrite the lyrics for a song, Home, into their own version of the melodic

intonation based on their creativity and originality.

The activity aimed to allow students to think about what they could do during

times of emergency and how they should react to such situations. They were tomake use of what they had learnt in emergency exercises and talks,

demonstrate how to solve racial conflicts and look out for each other, living in

harmony. This activity thus allowed students to think about the importance of

the five aspects of Total Defence - Psychological Defence, Social Defence,

Economic Defence, Civil Defence and Military Defence.

DUNMAN HIGH HOME VIDEO WINNER 6C12

One Home was a combined effort by 6C12, featuring all

members of our class in a stop motion video. Each frame of the

video is an individual photo of that particular scene, which

meant that to photograph each frame, the props had to be

shifted inches to the right, left, up or down. Hence, even

though they were not featured, there were many prop-movers

who went around shifting the props in the backdrop between

every frame. Even though we had limited time to produce thevideo, all of us had great fun working collectively to puttogether this video of what home, actually means to us.

Singapores military embodies the spirit of resolution and determination,

striving to progress further in its capabilities and also of training young

servicemen to serve Singapore with a true National Identity. The SAF Military

Exhibition in Dunman High reflected such values, and exposed participants to

    life as a regular serviceman.

The fair encompassed interactive displays which proved engaging to many.

Students were enriched by witnessing how tanks were modelled, and learnt

about the various capabilities of armoured vehicles in urban backgrounds.

Furthermore, a tank modelling demonstration allowed students to view up

close just one of the many vehicles the SAF possesses. Weapons on displayincluded pistols, rifles, and machine guns, which the SAF men kindly allowed to

be picked up and held. Dunmanians thus were able to experience the weight ofan actual weapon for the first time, and also learnt how to reload and cock the

weapon while firing at targets in the simulation shooting exercise.

One of the booths also dished out free food samples commonly consumed in

the military,, mirroring the practical realities of the military life. In the end,

students left encouraging notes of appreciation on the board, leaving remarks

on their enriched impressions and hope for the future of SAF members.

Through the use of lights, sounds, taste, and a whole range of visually andmentally stimulating exhibits, students understood the importance of the role

our Army plays in the defense of Singapore and gained an insight into the types

of equipment that enable our soldiers to protect our country, and also the

workings of the military as a whole.

This year's total defence day in DHS was a very special one, because therewas a ceremony in the morning whereby the members of the Singapore

Armed Forces (SAF), in Dunman High for an exhibition, accompanied us for

flag raising, as a form of respect for the country and to also commemorate

the day when Singapore fell into the hands of the Japanese.

During assembly students were given time to visit the exhibition, where

booths were set up in the parade square to show the different aspects of

the SAF and how they play a role in defending Singapore. The SAF brought

down their F-9 dogs, and other gadgets such as tracking goggles for this

    exhibition.

The SAF was also kind enough to bring down some of their weaponry and

uniforms for us to try on and have a feel of what it is like and how cool we

would look like. Moreover, there were also booths such as the face

painting booths, which I felt was the most visited booth as most people

wanted a taste of what it would be like to have their face painted in

camouflage colours. There was also a food booth set up whereby students

had a taste of the ration food that the SAF soldiers would consume when

    in times of danger.

Overall, this year's total defence day was quite an enriching andinteresting one because we were able to experience total defence day in a

different way through first hand experience and interaction with members

of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) instead of the usual talks and

    performances.

As a school, as a home, we unite together, as true Singaporeans. The past,

especially the years immediately after independence ,has been a tumultuous

one. The present prosperous and stable. The future holds high hopes for all of

us. However, what does it mean to truly mean to be a Singaporean? Does thisbond truly unite us together against adversities?

The assembly revolved around the literal concept of Home, the nations

identity and how it lies within our hearts. The video sharing from our

Dunmanian Youth Alumni, their nostalgia for our country was appreciation at itsutmost sentimentalism and truth. It ingrained in us, how Singapore is our

residence, birth place, and so much more. Thus every single one of us should

aim to contribute to the defense of our country and the promotion of its

interests, such as through National Service. In the context of National Service,

videos were shared, stories were told, and the idea that serving our Home is anessential context of not only abiding by duty, but also abiding by our hearts was

aptly put across. It may be love, tough love, as depicted in the blatant

exhaustion of the soldiers in the video, but the final memories remain fond, as

shared by the teachers. Before one can truly gain a true comprehension of

serving your country, one must experience pain. Physical and mental exhaustion

leads to self discovering your true potential. The teachers themselves began in

similar predicaments, but the process of overcoming it led to them becomes

    leaders and true visionaries.

As the final video of the song Home is played, each melody continues along

the flow of treasured memories and the dreams we share together for thefuture, with our hearts being deeply rooted in our country of origin, Singapore.

We only have one home, and through this assembly, rediscovering the

importance of our presence to our Home made the days assembly one to be

    cherished and valued.

I learnt a couple of things from the Total Defence

    activities.

Firstly, was the talk done by an SAF major. Even though I

did not understand many of the terms he used, the

diagrams clearly displayed that the army was very well

organised, with many back-up plans should danger strike.

Second was the video about the SAF. It was a real sight tosee that these young man had to shave their head bald, as

part of a 'ritual' before they enter the Army. When the

young men's parents were interviewed, they mentioned

that it was a bit nostalgic seeing their own sons having to

go through this process, just as they had done some 30

years ago. This made me think and reminded me about

this ongoing cycle - of parents entering the army, and

their sons entering many years later. It is a continuous

motion, just like how our feelings for Singapore shouldbe, constant and never wavering. It is only with such a

spirit that we are able to keep Singapore safe.

Finally, was a showcase put up by the Singapore Armed

Forces (SAF) The tents at the parade ground were also

positioned as part of their safety plan. It was really cool

to see all the equipment, armed cars and even a trained

dog! I was very amazed and impressed by the equipment

    that the army possesses.

With such high level of security, I feel safe in the SAF's

    hands.
