Employment Record

Quad Design (Muscat Branch) Senior Project Architect

Residential & Commercial Development, Muscat, Oman. Project Architect (2009 - 2010)

A high-end residential & commercial complex, consisting 54 luxury apartments and over 10,000 m2 of open office space. Apartments were designed as 2 separate blocks of 5 levels each, above a 6,000 m22 basement car park. Design included a central courtyard between apartment blocks, with soft landscaping and water features. Total Floor Area – 20,000 m2. Project cost - AUD 40 million.

Major Responsibilities

Design development in Co-ordination with the Client & other Consultants. Preparation of finishing schedules, door window schedules and specifications. Detailed apartment floor plans, detailed cross sections, 1:5, 1:10 aluminum door & window details, roof garden

detailing etc. Liaise with Government authorities & Engineers to ensure compliance with local building and fire regulations. Managing tender process including calling of tenders, pre-tender meetings, replying to tender queries, arranging

site visits etc. Achievements Tender documents & contract documents were successfully completed as scheduled.

Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque, Muscat, Oman.

Project Architect (April 2010 - June 2012) Resident Architect (June 2012 - June 2014)

Project of over 10,000 m2 of built up area and a total value of over AUD 160 million. Mosque was a modern interpretation of traditional Islamic architecture blended with local architectural heritage. It was designed around a central courtyard on an elevated plane, which all religious spaces were directly linked. Apart from the main prayer areas for men and women, a fully equipped library and class rooms were provided with the intention of making it a learning hub for the neighborhood. Very high end finishes such as marble cladding, glass & marble mosaic works, bronze doors/ windows, decorative chandeliers and Persian carpets were used. Central court yard was equipped with a under floor cooling system, which allows people to pray from outside even at extremely hot summer months.

Major Responsibilities

Checking and approval of shop drawings for civil, marble & timber works. Review of material submissions / mockups and approval. Visiting factories/ workshops to ensure the quality standards. Supervision of all finishing works including marble cladding, timber, bronze, stone & decorative lighting. Overall contract administration, issuing instructions, contractual correspondence, responding to RFIs & TQs,

progress monitoring, chairing site meetings etc. Attending to day-to-day site inspections with main contractor and various other specialist contractors. Review and assessment of Contractor’s variation claims & time extension claims. Organizing building handover procedures including snagging, statutory approvals etc.

Achievements

Project was successfully completed with highest commendation from the Client as well the general public. Ensured highest level of quality in finishing works which included over 15,000 m2 of carved/ plain Italian

marble cladding, cast bronze doors/ windows, over 10,000 m2 of marble flooring, over 2000 m2 of hand woven carpets, several large sized chandeliers, customized timber furniture etc.

Omani Embassy & Ambassador’s Residence in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Project Architect (July 2014 – January 2015)

Project included Embassy building as well as the Ambassador’s residence, which had a built up area of over 10,000 m2 in total. Designed to reflect the identity of the country featuring various design elements from traditional Omani architecture. Being a diplomatic mission, a special consideration had to be given to operation & functional aspects of the building. Major Responsibilities Design development in Co-ordination with the Client & other Consultants. Obtaining the Approval from the Client and preparation of design development drawings accommodating the

revisions and design changes. Coordinating, planning & organizing with the team members on their tasks to meet deadlines. Developing Joinery details, wet area details, roof light details etc. Liaise with overseas consultant to understand the statutory requirements in terms of fire regulations, building

regulations and sustainability ratings.

Achievements Successfully co-ordinated documentation from all Consultants and ensure those are consistent and compatible. Design changes were communicated to all concerned parties and necessary modifications were ensured.

Personalized Residence for a VIP Client in Muscat, Oman. Project Architect (Aug 2006 – June 2008)

Contemporary but yet traditional house built on a cliff maximizing the potential of the place. Spaces were organized around a central courtyard, opening out to the sea. Floor Area 4,000 m2, Project Cost AUD 7 Million. Major Responsibilities Design development in Co-ordination with the Principal Architect & other Consultants. Preparation of construction documentation including detailed floor plans, 1:50 building sections, external

elevations, 1:20, 1:10 door / window details, cast aluminium screen details, swimming pool & water feature details etc.

Preparation of finishing schedules, door/ window schedules etc. Attending site meetings, site supervision including checking & approval of setting out etc.

Achievements All architectural construction drawings were complete on time and passed over to the Contractor.

The Blue City (Phase I) – Public Amenities Project Architect (2008)

A prime tourist destination in the country and Quad Design was appointed as the design sub-contractor, all public amenities buildings including a fire station, a police station, a primary school, a post office, a health center, a mosque and a city hall. Major Responsibilities Design development and detailing in co-ordination with the Principal Architect. Co-ordination with various government institutions such as Directorate of Civil Defence, Royal Oman Police,

Education Ministry, Health Ministry etc. to understand their requirements and incorporate in the design. Detailed sections, elevations, door/ window details, roofing details etc. Preparation of drawing delivery schedules, costing schedules and payment schedules etc. Continuous design review with the Main Contractor, in order to maintain floor area and cost. Value engineering in order to comply with the strict floor area and budget limitations for each building. Project was suspended by the Client/ Investors due to financial constraints.

Suchith Mohotti Associates private Limited, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Senior Architect (June 2004 – July 2006)

Sheraton Institute of Information Technology, Dehiwela , Sri Lanka. Design/ Project Architect (2008)

5 storied IT campus with a built-up area of over 6,000 m2 of floor area. Project consisted of state-of-the art auditorium, swimming pool and all necessary facilities for IT training. Building was designed around a central courtyard and all class rooms were located overlooking the same getting ample natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. Project Cost AUD 7 million. Major Responsibilities Conceptual design and design development in co-ordination with the Principal Architect. Attending meetings with the Client for design development & refinements. Co-ordination with other Consultants (Structure, MEP & QS) in order to make the scheme comprehensive. Organizing & planning of team of junior architects and draftspersons in order to meet the documentation

deadlines. Assisting the tender process by replying to queries, participating site visits & pre-tender meetings, tender

negotiations etc. Checking and approval of setting out for piling and other sub-structure works. Achievements Successful completion of construction documentation on time. Refurbishment of Hotel Sigiriya, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. Project Architect (2005)

The resort hotel is designed celebrating the view of UNESCO world heritage site, Sigiriya rock Fortress. Major Responsibilities Liaison with the Client organization to explore and finalize finishing concepts and materials. Selection and approval of materials in co-ordination with the Principal Architect and the contractors. Contract administration and supervision of finishing works. Achievements

In co-ordination with the Client & Contractor, project was successfully completed on time.

Refurbishment of ARPICO Hypermarket, Nawinna, Sri Lanka. Project Architect (2005)

ARPICO is a prominent hypermarket chain in Sri Lanka. Project included a total refurbishment of old merchandiser and creating a link between old and newly built showroom. Building was designed in keeping with the already established brand image of the client organization. Since the construction works had to be carried out while the market was operation, construction had to be phased out, properly planned and the completion deadlines had to be followed strictly. Major Responsibilities Preparation of construction documentation and schedules. Co-ordination with the Client, Principal Architect and the Contractor. Contract administration including contractual correspondence, attending site meetings, making minutes etc. Material inspection and approval. Overall site supervision, inspection and approval.

A High End Personalized House, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Project Architect (2004 / 2005)

A 3-storied luxury house in the heart of Colombo. Designed with clear separation of private and common areas in order to protect the privacy of the residents. In order to maximize the use of backyard, living and dining areas were opened out and a Jacuzzi pool was also introduced. Timber was used heavily along with various shades of granite in order to give a modern Asian touch for the house. Major Responsibilities Co-ordination with the Client, Principal Architect and the Contractor to review, select and approve materials

and finishes. Preparation of construction drawings based on changes in order to issue to the Contractor. Overall contract administration including conducting site meetings, making meeting minutes etc. Inspection and approval of finishing works. Achievements Project was completed to the utmost satisfaction of the Client.

KFC Outlets Project Architect (2004 / 2005)

Project was to design KFC outlets in 3 distinct suburbs catering different clientele. Design was majorly driven by the established brand image of the Client as well as the anticipated customer groups. Client’s design guidelines and standards had to be thoroughly studied and understood beforehand the design. Major Responsibilities Co-ordination with the Client’s design group and Principal Architect to prepare the conceptual design. Preparation of presentation material including 3D visualizations and conceptual drawings. Achievements Client was highly convinced about the design as well the presentation, which became a reality later. National Savings Bank, Dambulla, Sri Lanka.

Project Architect (2006) Branch building for a state owned bank in the rapidly developing urban centre in Sri Lanka. Being located right in the centre of the city, design had to be very compact while providing all necessary facilities required for a public building. Major Responsibilities Conceptual design in co-ordination with the principal architect. Design detailing – detailed floor plans, RCP, cross sections, aluminium door/ window details. Co-ordination with Consultants Managing the tendering process including replying to queries, tender negotiations, issuing addendums etc.

Achievements All tender documents were completed on time and the tender was awarded as scheduled. Well co-ordinated

and accurate set of construction information was passed on to the Contractor to start the work.

“Turkish Village” - Housing Scheme for Tsunami Victims, Kalmunai, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. Project Architect (2005)

Multi storey housing project for tsunami victims, funded by the Turkish Red Crescent. Kalmunai is a remote area and the concept of multi storey housing was new to the local community. Therefore, all efforts were made to create an environment, minimizing users’ existing lifestyle as fishermen.

Major Responsibilities Conceptual design in co-ordination with the principal architect. Co-ordination with Consultants. Continuous review with the Donors to keep the cost within budget. Managing the tendering process including replying to queries, tender negotiations, issuing addendums etc.

Achievements All tender documents were completed successfully, on time. Project was suspended by the Client/ Donors after tendering, due to financial constraints.

Gunaratna Associates, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Graduate Architect (Oct 2001 – Oct 2002)

Asiri Surgical Hospital, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

A 12-storey privately owned hospital with all ultra-modern medical facilities including 54 luxury in-patient rooms. It also consisted of 15-bed intensive care unit and 4 operating theatres. Project Cost SL Rs. 750 million. Major Responsibilities Preparation of detailed floor plans & detailed cross sections of in-patient rooms. Detailed plan of operating theatre floor in co-ordination with principal architect, senior architects, industry

specialists and engineers. Assisting senior architects in making tender documents for various specialized works.

Academic Work

Comprehensive Design Project 2004 M.Sc. (Architecture) Programme, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

Multi-Mode Transportation Terminal, Kalutara, Sri Lanka. A passenger transport hub integrating bus, rail and water transportation systems in a prominent religious urban centre in Sri Lanka. An urban design exercise for the city as well as designing the passenger interchange comprising railway station, bus terminal and ferry point, completes the project.

Architectural Thesis 2004 M.Sc. (Architecture) Programme, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

Urban Geometry as a Determinant of Outdoor Thermal Comfort The study comprised of an on-site research as well as a computer simulation study on the effect of building morphology on human thermal comfort. It mainly focused on probable urban forms to create a "shadow umbrella", in order to make the urban public spaces thermally comfortable. Finally, urban design guidelines were derived.

20th March 2015 To whom it may concern, Dhanika completed 80 hours of work placement at Wolf Architects Australia in March 2015. During this time he was given many challenging design tasks to complete as a part of his training. Dhanika was a hard worker and achieved good results. He was expected to carry out a wide variety of tasks and was able to do them without reservation. He learnt how to concentrate, focus on given tasks and this greatly improved his attention to detail. He was exposed to a multi cultural working environment and this improved his communication skills. We wish him all the best in the future.
