1 Safety precautions

Read Carefully

Please make sure that the use of this product is allowed in the country and in the environment required. The use of this product may be dangerous and has to be avoided in the following areas:

Where, it can interfere with other electronic devices in environments such as hospitals, airports, aircrafts, etc.

Where there is risk of explosion such as gasoline stations, oil refineries, etc

It is responsibility of the user to enforce the country regulation and the specific environment regulation.

Do not disassemble the product; any mark of tampering will compromise the warranty validity. We recommend the following instructions of the hardware user guide for a correct wiring of the product. The product has to be provided with a stabilized voltage source and the wiring has to be conformed to the security and fire prevention regulations.

The system integrator is responsible for the functioning of the final product; therefore, care has to be taken to the external components of the module, as well as of any project or installation issue, because the risk of disturbing the wireless communication networks or external devices having impact on the SIM20 module. Should there be any doubt, please refer to the technical documentation and the regulations in force.

3 Scope of the user’s guide

This document provides the usage of SIM20-EVB,users can get useful information about the SIM20-EVB quickly through this document.

4 EVB Overview

4.1 Contents of the kit

Development equipment is provided as in the following table. Please check the contents of the SIM20 kit. If anything is missing, please contact the supplier.

4.2 General Description

SIMCom supplies the SIM20 kit to assist the designer, during the developing project phase, to develop applications based upon the wireless modules.

The SIM20 kit provides a fully functional solution for a complete data application.

4.2.1 Block Diagram

The SIM20 kit can be split into several functional blocks depending on the implemented function, as the following Figure 2.

This development kit can be used for data application, and its interface features as following:

· UART interface

· C2 interface for download

· IIC interface (reserved)

· SPI interface (reserved)

4.2.2 Mechanical feature

5 SIM20 Interface

Please ensure that the connector is in a right direction, otherwise the SIM20 module might be damaged. The connector’s pin-functions are listed in the following table.

6 Accessory Interface

This chapter describes the hardware interfaces:

· Power interface

· UART interface

· IIC interface（reserved）

· SPI interface（reserved）

6.1 Power Interface

The power supply of SIM20 is from 3.3V to 5.5V.The EVB power supply for the SIM20 is 4.2V. So the power supply to the EVB is from 5V to 24V, and it must provide 200mA at least.

6.1.1 Power Supply

The power supply system of the EVB is as following figure 4.

Please use a right jack as the following figure, who shows the construct of the Power Plug.The other power supply is miniusb connector.

6.1.2 Li-Ion Battery pack

In order to use SIM20 modules outdoor, a Li-Ion Battery pack is a good choice. The figure 6 offers an available connection for outdoor use.

Note：VBAT pin is connected to the SIM20 module, please ensure that the power supply is between 3.3V~ 5.5V, out of this range is not allowed.

6.2 UART Interface

There are two UART interfaces on SIM20-EVB, but only one of them is available. The signal pins used in this interface are TXD and RXD. The main UART interface default supports 115200bps.

J103 is used as a test interface only, and it is not provided to users.

J104 is a main UART interface, it can be used as data communication, SIM20 parameter setting.

6.2.1 Main UART Interface

Communication cable uses the male connector as figure 8.

6.3 IIC Interface

IIC interface is reserved for special use of users.

6.4 SPI Interface

SPI interface is reserved for special use of users.

There are three LED indicators and one key on the EVB board.

D101: it is connected to NSS pad of SIM20 module (default GPIO).

D102: it is connected to SCK pad of SIM20 module (default GPIO).

D103: Power indicator of EVB

S102: it is connected to SDA pad of SIM20 module (default GPIO).

Operating indication

1. Insert the power jack and turn on S101, then the D103 LED is ON.

Working states of LED are as following table.

7 Illustration

7.1 Turn on

(1) Connect the SIM20 module to the 12pin connector on SIM20-EVB.

(2) Insert 5V~24V direct current source adapter.

(3) Switch on the S101.

7.2 Turn off

Turn off the SIM20 module by switching off the S101.
