Developing Academic Reading Skills: Supporting First Attempts Thursday 21 st June 2018, 12.30 – 14.00 Facilitator: Michaela Smith Objectives During the session delegates will: Explore potential barriers to learning that impact upon students’ first attempts at reading critically at Level 4 and the impact upon their academic writing Explore approaches to teaching / supporting academic reading Explore approaches to developing critical thinking skills Explore approaches to developing skills in synthesising material to support academic writing Pre-requisites This session is open to all staff, but will focus on supporting Year 1 undergraduates. Programme This session will involve group discussion and both group and individual activities. Rationale This session will look at developing students’ academic reading skills to improve their academic writing and maximise their academic success.
