The DETAN Tension Rod System
The DETAN Tension Rod System is anaesthetically pleasing method of provi-ding bracing or structural support. TheDETAN system is manufactured fromboth carbon steel and stainless steel ina variety of sizes.Adjustment for length is hidden withinthe system and is provided withoutthe use of turnbuckles or unsightlyexposed threads.
The manufacture of every componentin the DETAN system is permanentlycontrolled and fulfills the requirementsof the HALFEN-DEHA Quality Mana-gement System, certified according toISO 9001.The DETAN System has been typeapproved by the Inspection Board forBuilding Engineering LGA, Bavaria,Germany.
Product features:• Easily adjustable for length
• Type approved• Sealing of the threads for corrosion
protection available (optional)• System diameters from 6 to 95 mm
(in stainless steel up to 30 mm)• Load capacity up to 2695 kN
• Available in carbon steel and stainlesssteel
• Variety of standard finishes

DETAN in stain-less steel are typically used in applica-tions, where a high resistance tocorrosion is necessary, or where apolished finish is preferred.Stainless steel tension rods are availa-ble up to six metres long in 9 diame-ters ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm. Aswith the carbon steel system, couplersand anchor discs may be used toextend the system when long spansare required.
Product range, load capacities anddimensions are detailed on pages 8and 9.For all components of the stainlesssteel system the following finishes are
:- polished (satin), order code- hand polished (glossy),

The increased load capacity of thesystem allows a reduction
of the system size compared with formersystems at one or two ranges, see tablebelow.

Available in nineteen diameters theDETAN System is supplied in twocarbon steel strengths:System diam. 6-12 mm = 355 N/mm²
The materialfor the tension rods is in accordancewith the German standards for steelconstruction: value Av >27 J at -20°C).
Product range, allowable loads anddimensions see pages 6 and 7.Two standard finishes are available forDETAN-S460:- black, order code:- hot dip galvanised rods and anchordiscs with Dacromet coated forkconnectors (a corrosion protectivecoating, which is at least equivalent tohot dip galvanising), order code:
System diam. 16-95 mm = 460 N/mm².By using high grade steels the DETANSystem is able to provide superiorperformance and economy while savingmaterial and weight.

Tension Rodsare supplied with one left-hand andone right-hand thread to complimentthe threaded adjustment facility in thefork connectors. Flats on the DETANtension rod enable a spanner to beused to turn the rod on its threads.Depending on the direction that therod is turned the length of the systemis either increased or reduced withinthe limits of its adjustment.
are used to join DETAN tension rods inapplications requiring long spans. Theyalso provide an additional facility foradjusting the system for length. EachDETAN coupler is provided with twolocking nuts. Sizes M12 and above canbe supplied with a welded lug toprovide a hanger connection if requi-red. Hangers can be used in long spanapplications to limit system deflection.
Couplers

Fork Connectors
are another method for extending thespan of the system, or they can beused to provide a central connectionpoint for structures requiring crossbracing. A maximum of eight bars maybe connected to each anchor disc.
provide an adjustable connectionbetween the tension rod and connec-tion plates on the structure or anchordiscs. Each DETAN tension rod systemhas 2 fork connectors, one with left-hand and one with right-hand thread.Fork connectors can easily be identi-fied by the color coded end plugs thatseal the fork ends from moisture pene-tration (yellow = right-hand, blue =left-hand thread). Combined withtapered locking nuts they provide anaesthetically pleasing connection to
the tension bar. Each fork connector is provided with
a pin and two circlips.A combination of flat and round sealscan be provided to special order forlocking nuts M16 and above, if isdesired to seal to the the threads fromthe accumulation of moisture or dirt.Locking nuts for systems M6 to M12are tightened with soft touch pliers.Sizes M16 and above are tightenedusing a peg spanner. To provide a visual safety check, thelocking nut hides an indicator mark onthe tension rod only when the systemis within its allowable range of adjust-ment.

Replacement Items
Connection Platesare used to attach the system to thestructure. They can be supplied as finsfor welding to steelwork or asT-brackets for bolting to the structure.Care should be taken in designing theposition of connection plates to ensurethat the tension rod system is notsubject to bending.
Cast-in HALFEN channels or drilledbolts may be used to fix connectionplates to concrete structures.Connection plates can be provided byHALFEN-DEHA or by a quality metal-worker.
DETAN Compression RodsDETAN Tension rods satisfy mostdesign requirements for bracing, butoccasionally there is a need for a com-pression member to both strengthenand stabilise the structure.DETAN Compression Rods have beendesigned to fulfil this requirement, while being aesthetically compatiblewith the other DETAN components.Compression rods consist of largediameter tubes, which are reduced ateach end to use standard DETAN forkconnectors to the structure. They aredesigned to order, and are available inboth carbon steel and stainless steel.

Assembly DETAN Sealing System
The load values given in the tables areexclusively for use with the DETAN ten-sion rod components. Before installationthe DETAN components should always bevisually checked for any damage causedduring transport. When connecting platesare used that have not been fabricatedand delivered by HALFEN-DEHA, thematerials, dimensional and geometriclimits specified in the technical approvalshould always be observed. The installa-tion tolerances given in the technicalguidance notes should also be observed. If, after the delivery of the DETAN compo-nents from HALFEN-DEHA, any part ismechanically modified by the user in amanner, which deviates from the establis-hed guidance notes, then the technicalapproval becomes invalid.
The DETAN locknut is screwed fully onthe DETAN Tension Rod. The forkconnector is screwed on the tensionrod until the the required system lengthis achieved. The locknut is
There are special markings on theDETAN tension rod to ensure, by scre-wing the locknut up properly, that theminimum screw-in depth into the forkend is achieved. This is confirmed whenthe mark is obscured and the locknut isproperly tightened. The pin in the fork connector is securedby two circlips, one on each side. Use asprung pliers for the installation of thecirclips.

then scre-wed back towards the fork connectoruntil it is locked.
The DETAN precise expansion measuring
system is attached to the unloaded ten-
sion rod. By applying the pre-stress load
(e.g. by screwing the tension rod into the
fork ends, see assembly instructions) the
tension rod is expanded. By exactly
measuring the expansion the pre-stress
load can be determined. This measuring
system can be used for all sizes of the
DETAN tension rod system.
In case of removing or unintentional
slipping of the measuring unit the refer-
ence measurement is lost; in this case the
tension rod must be completely released
and the pre-stressing and measuring
procedure must be started again. Long
term load supervision cannot be provided
by this system. For this purpose another
measuring system is required.
