At the forefront, on the right-hand side, the stamp shows a picture of Dr. Zilda Arns, a pediatrics and public health physician, Children’s Pastoral mentor, with the unmistakable smile that always characterized her. The drawing of a heart in the background represents the love, dedication and care that would become a trademark of her social work and ensure her the admiration of all Brazilians. Overlapping that picture are the logos of the Children’s Pastoral and Mercosur. On the bottom left-hand corner one can see the silhouettes of ordinary people paying tribute to the late physician. The techniques used were drawing and graphic tablets.

O desenho de um coração, ao fundo, simboliza o amor, a dedicação e o carinho com que a homenageada realizou suas obras sociais, conquistando a admiração de todos os brasileiros. Sobrepostas àquela imagem, as logomarcas da Pastoral da Criança e do Mercosul. No canto inferior esquerdo, silhuetas de pessoas comuns que prestam homenagem à saudosa médica. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de desenho e pintura em mesa digitalizadora.

Este selo postal, relativo à emissão anual dos países do Mercosul, é o reconhecimento ao importante trabalho desenvolvido pela médica pediatra e sanitarista Drª. Zilda Arns, que, com seu trabalho e dedicação em prol das crianças brasileiras, exerceu suas funções de profissional com amor extremo, abraçando em plenitude sua cidadania. É também uma referência à conclusão da Década da Cultura de Paz 2001/2010, instituída, em 1998, pela Assembleia Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas – ONU. Uma mulher de coragem! Drª. Zilda Arns viveu para defender e promover as crianças, as gestantes e os idosos, e construir uma sociedade mais justa, fraterna, com menos doenças e sofrimento humano. Morreu tragicamente no terremoto que devastou a capital do Haiti, Porto Príncipe, em 12 de janeiro de 2010, logo após fazer um pronunciamento sobre como salvar vidas com medidas simples, educativas e preventivas. Deixou sua marca na história do Brasil ao fundar e coordenar a Pastoral da Criança e a Pastoral da Pessoa Idosa. Drª. Zilda formou-se em medicina. Era pediatra e sanitarista. Nasceu em Forquilhinha (SC) em 25 de agosto de 1934. Depois de morar em Curitiba desde a juventude, nos últimos anos residia em Campo Largo (PR), a 25 km da capital paranaense. Em 26 de dezembro de 1959, casou-se com Aloísio Bruno Neumann (1931-1978), com quem teve seis filhos, e foi avó de dez netos. Em 1983, incentivada pelo irmão Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, e a pedido da Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil – CNBB, a Drª. Zilda iniciou a Pastoral da Criança, juntamente com Dom Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Cardeal Primaz do Brasil e Arcebispo de São Salvador da Bahia, que na época era Arcebispo de Londrina. Por meio da Pastoral da Criança desenvolveu a metodologia comunitária de multiplicação do conhecimento e da solidariedade entre as famílias mais pobres, baseando-se no milagre da multiplicação de peixes e pães, que saciaram cinco mil pessoas, como consta no Evangelho de São João (Jo 6,1-15). Como resultado das ações promovidas pela Pastoral da Criança, foi reduzida significativamente a mortalidade infantil e promovido o controle da desnutrição em mais de 44 mil comunidades. Os líderes comunitários capacitados visitam as casas mensalmente, orientam as mães sobre os cuidados com a saúde e o desenvolvimento da criança. Após 26 anos, a Pastoral da Criança conta com mais de 260 mil voluntários, que acompanham 1,8 milhão de gestantes e crianças com menos de seis anos e 1,4 milhão de famílias pobres, em 4.063 municípios do País. Em 2004, a Drª. Zilda recebeu da CNBB outra missão semelhante, fundar, organizar e coordenar a Pastoral da Pessoa Idosa. Atualmente, mais de 158 mil idosos são acompanhados todos os meses por 17 mil voluntários em 740 municípios brasileiros. Em novembro de 2008, participou da fundação da Pastoral da Criança Internacional, no Uruguai, da qual foi coordenadora. A Pastoral da Criança está presente em 20 países da América Latina e Caribe, África e Ásia. Em seu trabalho, sempre aliou o conhecimento científico ao conhecimento e cultura popular, valorizou o papel da mulher pobre na transformação social; mobilizou a todos, pobres e ricos, analfabetos e doutores, na busca da Vida Plena para todos. Em suas manifestações costumava dizer: “Há muito o que se fazer, porque a desigualdade social é grande. Os esforços que estão sendo feitos precisam ser valorizados para que gerem outros ainda maiores.” Faleceu fazendo o que sempre defendeu: congregar mais pessoas para se unirem na busca de “vida em abundância” para crianças e gestantes pobres, transformando o seu trabalho em um exemplo de amor, capaz de transformar o mundo, promovendo a paz e a dignidade do ser humano.

This postage stamp, which is related to the annual issue of Mercosur countries, acknowledges the important work developed by the pediatrics and public health physician Zilda Arns, who through her work and dedication to Brazilian children carried out her professional duties with extreme love, fully embracing her citizenship. It is also a reference to the end of the 2001-2010 Culture of Peace Decade established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1998. A woman of courage! Dr. Zilda Arns lived to advocate and promote the rights of children, pregnant women and the elderly as well as to build a more just and fraternal society with less diseases and human suffering. She died tragically in the earthquake that devastated Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on January 12nd, 2010, right after having delivered a speech on how to save lives through simple, educational and preventive measures. She left her mark in Brazil’s history as the founder and coordinator of the Pastoral da Criança (Children’s Pastoral) and the Pastoral da Pessoa Idosa (Pastoral Care for the Elderly). A medicine graduate, Dr. Arns was a pediatrics and public health physician. She was born in Forquilhinha, in the southern state of Santa Catarina, on August 25th, 1934. After having lived in Curitiba, the State Capital of Paraná since her youth, she moved to Campo Largo, also in the state of Paraná, 25 km far from Curitiba. On December 26th, 1959, she married Aloísio Bruno Neumann (1931-1978), with whom she had six children and ten grandchildren. In 1983, encouraged by her brother Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns and at the request of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB), Dr. Zilda Arns laid the foundations of the Children’s Pastoral together with D. Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Cardinal Primate of Brazil and Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, who at the time was Archbishop of Londrina. Through the Pastoral she developed the grassroots methodology of knowledge multiplication and solidarity among the poorest families, based on the miracle of the multiplication of fish and loaves that fed 5,000 people, as stated in Saint Johns Gospel (John 6,1-15). The actions carried out by the Children’s Pastoral led to a significant decrease in child mortality rates, in addition to promoting the control of malnutrition in over 44,000 communities. Trained community leaders visit the households on a monthly basis to orient the mothers on how to care for their children’s health and development. After 26 years, the Pastoral counts on the support of more than 260,000 volunteers, who provide assistance to 1.8 million pregnant women and children under 6 years of age as well as to 1.4 million poor families in 4,063 municipalities in the country. In 2004 Dr. Zilda was assigned a similar mission by the CNBB: to organize and coordinate the Pastoral Care for the Elderly. Currently, over 158,000 elderly persons are followed up every month by 17,000 volunteers in 740 Brazilian municipalities. In November 2008 she participated in the foundation of the International Children’s Pastoral in Uruguay, which se also coordinated. The Children’s Pastoral is present in 20 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. In her work, Dr. Zilda Arns always merged scientific knowledge with popular knowledge and culture, valued the role of poor women in social change, and mobilized everyone – rich and poor, illiterate and lettered alike in the search for the Full Life for all. In her speeches she used to say that “There is a lot to be done because social inequality is huge. The efforts that are being made need to be recognized so that they can generate even bigger ones”. She died doing what she had always stood for: mobilizing more people to join forces in the search for “an abundant life” for poor children and pregnant women, thus translating her work into an example of love that is capable of changing the world through promoting peace and human dignity.
