immersive mobile
experienceMark D’Cunha, P.Eng.
Who remembers the History of
Mobile? iPhone was the first immersive
phone platform (2007)
Incumbents at that time:
Nokia - Symbian phones
Microsoft – Windows Mobile
phones
Samsung, Motorola
RIM – Blackberry phones

Human Factors How humans interact with elements of a system
The activity being done
The demands on the user
Mobile Considerations:
Sight – screen size and field of vision is important
(smartphone, tablet, desktop, big screen TV)
Sound – richness of sound increases immersion (surround
sound, headphones, speakers, mono)
Imagination – the human imagination can magnify or ridicule the
experience
What is an Immersive Experience The sensation of being surrounded by a completely other
reality (Murray)
The perceptual illusion of non-mediation (Telepresence)
How do you measure immersion? Variation in heart rate
Perspiration
Pupil dilation
Galvanic skin response
Facial electroymyography
Anecdotal evidence:
How intuitive is it
Addictive nature
Amount of time spent
Strategies A consistent experience (predictable)
Meaningful tasks (relevant)
A match between the user’s expectation and the
environment’s conventions (intuitive)
These strategies are the most powerful elements in an
immersive design. They create a flowing experience.
Tactics Highly visual
Often involves Social
Presence-based
Sensory presence
Challenge-based presence
Imaginative presence
