Cartridge seals — the total service

Your custom-designed cartridge sealfrom James Walker will provide thetotal solution to rotary shaft sealingproblems, particularly where standardmethods and products are unlikely tosucceed.

Our total service includes all or anynumber of the following operations —undertaken in close liaison with yourengineering staff:

• On-site assessment of your specificsealing requirements.

•Custom design of a tailored solutionbased on a metal cartridge thathouses one or more sealingelements, and includes flushfacilities where required.

• Sealing elements carefully selectedfrom our full family of products —including Walkersele® radial lipseals, other rotary seals, glandpackings or ‘O’ rings — to meetprecise operational parameters. Wewill custom design sealing elementsspecifically for your application, where this is necessary.

• Cartridges are designed to matchthe pressure rating of the sealingapplication, and provide full housingsupport for the sealing element/sunder all operational conditions.

Plant manufacturers often want toconcentrate on their core businesses —such as gearbox, pump or bearingproduction — and leave the highlyspecialised area of fluid sealing technologyto an acknowledged expert such as JamesWalker.

In close liaison with your design andproduction engineering staff, we willcustom design, prototype and test a fluidsealing system specifically for you.

The bolt-on cartridge units we supply willarrive as complete assemblies for you toinstall at plant assembly stage, in theknowledge that they will work reliably asspecified. By this means, we relieve you ofthe responsibility for sealing systemdesign and specification, and sealhousing manufacture.

We will supply replacement componentswhen they are needed for the operationalplant — and fit them at your customer’ssite, if required. Alternatively, we provide aworkshop-based refurbishment service.

Plant operators usually need theirrotary sealing systems upgraded to:

• Reduce product loss

• Meet new production demands

• Improve health and safety regimes

• Comply with new environmentallegislation.

We will custom design and supply acartridge-based system that replaces theoriginal sealing unit. In this case oursystem will run reliably and maintenance-free for far longer, and provide higherintegrity sealing.

A split-type cartridge is the best solutionfor most existing plant, as this can bereadily installed without stripping downshafts and housings to gain access.

Older plant with worn shafts, caused bydecades of sealing abrasion, can bebrought back to efficient operation with acustomised bolt-on cartridge unit.

We will design and supply an easilyinstalled split-type cartridge unit thatrelocates the sealing elements over anunworn section of the shaft.

This extends the life of the plant andovercomes the need to shut down fortime-consuming shaft reconditioning orcostly shaft replacement.

Shafts with high radial movement —created by bearings that are worn or outof alignment — are effectively sealedusing our custom-designed cartridgesthat contain sealing elements in ‘floating’housings.

Case studies — problem solving across industry

Dredge pump seals

Problem: To protect bearings on dredge pumps from highlyabrasive slurry.

Solution: Custom manufactured cartridge unit containingthree specially designed lip seals of 330mm ID moulded ina James Walker elastomeric compound for greatlyextended sealing life in abrasive conditions.

Blast furnace — flow gate paddle seals

Problem: To overcome unacceptable wear on the shaft thatrotates a paddle to control the high-volume, low-pressure flowof blast furnace gases. The original compression packingsystem no longer sealed efficiently on the worn shaft duringslow oscillating movements through 90 degrees.

Solution: A custom designed fully-split cartridge unit thatbolts straight onto the plant without removal of shaft orhousings. The cartridge contains two patented Walkersele®

OSJ (On-Site Joining) rotary lip seals, working back to back, plus a nylon lantern ring for grease lubrication. The cartridgepositions the sealing lips on an undamaged section of theshaft, thus increasing the shaft’s useful working life.

Problem: To create a new sealing system to runmaintenance free for three years on the shafts of Francisand Kaplan water turbines in hydroelectric schemes. It mustbe economical to refurbish on site with minimal plantdowntime.

Solution: An innovative Hydrosele® split-type cartridge unit. This contains two highly developed sealing elements thatrun on a hydrodynamic film with flush water introducedbetween them. One unit has run faultlessly for over nineyears on a vertical Francis turbine.

Using split-type cartridges and sealing elements, thecomplete system can be refurbished on site in just a fewhours. Second picture shows the refurbishment kit.

De-waxer filter rotary seals run 12+ years

Problem: To develop a new sealing system to controlfugitive emissions of volatile solvent from six rotary de-waxer filters on the lubrication oil plant of a major UKrefinery. Existing system had glands that neededrepacking every few months. Customer wanted seals torun for four or six years between turnarounds.

Solution: A custom-designed cartridge unit with floatinggland housing containing four rings of 20mm sectionAquagraf compression packing made of lubricated PTFEand graphite yarn braided around an elastomeric core. The floating gland housing efficiently absorbsmisalignment created by differential thermal movementduring the process cycle and bearing/shaft wear of up to2mm.

Six of these cartridge units have operated problem-freefor over 12 years on 627mm diameter shafts rotating atabout 3 rpm.

Our customised cartridge seals areusually designed, manufactured andsupplied to solve a specific problem on aplant or piece of equipment.

However, we have standard cartridgecomponents that may be suitable — aswell as a very wide range of rotary lipseals and other sealing elements thatbetween them match the vast majority ofindustrial applications.

Please let us know the full extent of yoursealing problem, including shaft sizes, working speeds, pressures andtemperatures, fluid media involved, chemical and particulate content, otheroperational parameters, and seallifetime expectancy.

We will then, if possible, visit your siteand assess the extent of the problem, before creating the optimum solutionbased on a customised cartridge seal.
