Gauge: 17 sts x 24 rows = 4” (10 cm), in Stockinette stitch, before blocking 14 sts x 20 rows = 4” (10 cm), in Stockinette stitch, after blocking Abbreviations: RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

CO = Cast On

BO = Bind Off

K = Knit

P = Purl

YO = Yarn Over

st(s) = Stitch(es)

Pm = Place stitch marker

sm = Slip stitch marker

RN = Right needle

LN = Left needle

tbl = Work stitch through back loop (results in a twisted stitch)

(K, YO, K) in 1 = (knit, yarn over, knit) into the same stitch: 2 stitches increased

M1R = 1 stitch right slanting increase: use LN to pick up the horizontal strand running between stitch on RN and next stitch on LN from the back, and knit it through the front loop.

M1L = 1 stitch left slanting increase: use LN to pick up the horizontal strand running between stitch on RN and next stitch on LN from the front, and knit it tbl.

S2KP = Slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit the next stitch, pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit st and off the RN (B) = Bead the st. After working the st as indicated, place it back on the LN. Bead the stitch using your method of choice (needle and thread or crochet hook). M1 = backward loop increase: Loop the working yarn around left index finger from front to back. Insert RN from back to front into back of the loop. Remove finger and tighten loop to create a stitch on RN. Modified Lace Bind off (RS): *place the st on RN on LN, K2tog tbl (st is now on RN), YO and use the LN to lift the st over the YO and off the RN; repeat from *. An easy way to do this BO using a 5mm crochet hook: *transfer the st on RN to LN, pass hook through 2 sts on LN tbl, pull up a loop, chain 1, drop both sts off LN, repeat from *. Note: This crescent-shaped shawl has a narrow center panel and a top down construction, beginning with a garter tab. A 3-st garter edge is added on right and left edges for both Body and Border.

The Body is worked in 2 sections, followed by 2 transitional rows and the Border. The Body pattern repeat is 8 sts and 16 rows, the Center Panel is 11 sts wide and the Border pattern repeat is 10 sts and 30 rows. You may wish to thread a lifeline in after you work each repeat. Each Chart row includes the right increase section, pattern repeat (shaded area), center panel (in Body charts only), and left increase section. Markers may be placed between the edge sts, increase sections, pattern repeat sections and center panel.

Begin Pattern: Using a provisional CO with waste yarn, CO 3 sts. Using working yarn, knit 12 rows: 6 garter ridges. Pm in first st of the first row for easy identification. Turn work 90 degrees, (YO, pick up a st) in each garter ridge along the long side of the work, end with YO. Remove the provisional CO, transferring the 3 sts to another needle, and K3 (19 sts including YO’s). Turn work. Set-up Row (WS): K3 (edge sts), pm, P1, pm, P1 tbl, K1, P7, K1, P1 tbl, pm, P1, pm, K3 (edge sts) (19 sts)

Note:

The garter stitch edging (K3 on both RS and WS) is worked on either side throughout both Body and Border and these edge sts are not indicated in the charts or the written instructions.

Stitch counts do not include the garter stitch edging.

Work shawl as instructed, slipping markers as you go.
