OUR MISSION: To create effective, compelling, and unique identity packages. We have developed processes focused on usability while maintaining a strong commitment to our clients' goals, schedule, and budget.

OUR TEAM: We have assembled a team of talented, creative professionals with diverse backgrounds of work and creative experiences. Our team has expertise ranging from print specialist, advertising, marketing knowledge and sales to web and graphic design. We combine this knowledge along with foresight and strategic planning to approach new challenges with your overall business goals in mind.

ADVANTAGES: Design Pros, Inc has a proven process that has been built and refined over 8 years. We take the time to get to know our customers and their marketing objectives from an unbiased outsider's perspective. We combine our knowledge, our customers' own perspectives and, quite often, their customers' perspectives to create an effective marketing strategy. This process helps us create a unique "branding blueprint" that gives all members of the creative team valuable insight and creates a foundation from which to design, develop and implement contracted media.

Another reason to choose Design Pros, Inc is the quality of our current and past work. We invite you to take a look and form your own opinion. We specialize in more than a few industries, as limiting ourselves to just a few could result in a lack of creativity and true insight as well as the possibility of our work competing with itself. The truth is that you don't want your marketing company to know your business too well. It would lose a true outsider's perspective if it did...and that perspective is exactly what's required to build a successful branding or re branding campaign.

Design Pros, Inc is a Concept-to-Completion company which uses in-house creative and technical talent as well as hand-picked vendors to offer full-service marketing and branding services to small, medium and large enterprises, as well as government agencies and non-profit organizations.

he Holidays are very tricky when it comes todécor. You try your best to get that “Department Store”look and for some reason you just can’t pull it off. You wantto have that big Holiday party at your home or that greatelegant end of year party for your office but you’re dis-couraged to make it look just right.

That’s where I step in! Let a professional help you putit all together. I can help with your existing décor, or youcan make a small investment and have the classic piecesfor now and years to come. I can help from scratch or justthe finishing touches – I’m here for you! Just give me acall and we can discuss your needs. Remember, the Holi-day’s are creeping up on us very quickly and you don’twant to wait until the last minute.

Here are a few tips for the Perfect Christmas Tree:

This should compliment the room that the tree willbe in. Layering varying versions of the same color (mean-ing, use shades of reds, greens, golds, browns, etc.) willprovide more visual depth and richness.

Select a theme or scheme that reflects your person-ality or things you already have or natural elements (whichcan help to keep the costs down). Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. A traditional, sophisticated tree doesn’t have to be red and gold. Blackand white will give you a stunning formal look. Hot pinkand lime green are fun non traditional colors.

Lights:Use more than you think you need!!

Use a MINIMUM of 100 lights per foot of tree. (Per-sonally, I double that.) Always check to make sure theywork before putting them on the tree.

Use non-flashing lights. Flashing lights make a treeappear garish and fight with the ornaments for attention.Wrap the trunk and light from inside out, making sure to

cover from the inside of the tree to the outer tips of thebranches. Use lights with green cords if you have a greentree. Use white cords if your tree is flocked.

Add the largest andmost unique items first:

Put the largest items on the tree first because theytake up the most space. Be sure to balance their placementover the tree.

Use ribbon, bead strands (old jewelry is great), pop-corn stings, florals, feathers, birds, and children’s toys.Use non-traditional items – large and small.

Ornaments:Varying the sizes and shapes provides interest.

Cluster several ornaments together for a big impact. Use large ornaments on a small tree to diminish its slightsize. Balance your tree’s ornaments using the majority ofthe largest ornaments at the bottom, medium size onesin the center and the smallest ornaments toward the top.Its good to mix it up, but a really large ornament at thetop of the tree will look misplaced.

Be careful not to clump – stand back and evaluateall sides, often. Use sprays and picks to fill in the gaps. Thisgives the tree maximum fullness.

Hang ornaments that don’t belong with the themeto the inside of the tree; hang ones that advance thetheme to the outer edges of the branches.

Use unusual toppers:Make a statement with large bows, sprays of eucalyptus, feathers, bells, berries, branches and glittery sprays. Make it large enough so that it doesn’t look dwarfed orlike an after-thought.

Under the tree:Forego the tree skirt, save some money and add

more interest by using sheets, tablecloths, old draperypanels, or fabric remnants that coordinate with your colorscheme. Coordinate your gift wrap to complete the look.

If you are interested and a fresh new feelingfor your business or home, let’s get started!

You may be considering promotional products, but wonder how they canhelp your company. Believe it or not, these tiny little investments can oftenprovide you with a better return on your investment than billboards or benchads in the community. Sure ads like billboards may be noticed as people aredriving around town, but they are much more expensive than a giveawayitem and will only appear in one place, where promotional products cantravel around from place to place. In fact, promotional products can help yourcompany in a number of ways you may have never thought of. Here are afew ideas of how these giveaways can help promote your company:

Getting passed along. Items like pens or pencils are tiny investments, butthe reality is that they are seen on a regular basis and often passed along topeople who would never have heard of your company otherwise. Most busi-nesses are going to make pens and pencils available to their customers andwhen they are accidentally removed from your premise, wouldn’t you ratherthey help promote your business to everyone who uses them?

Daily reminders. Some things, like desk calendars and chip clips may notever leave the possession of the person you gave them to, but they can beseen every day by that potential customer. This is a great way to subtletysend your message on a regular basis.

Walking billboards. Ever wonder why so many companies give away teeshirts and hats? It’s a double promotion. The person wearing your shirt or

cap will think about your business when they put them on and then everyonewho sees them throughout the day will be reminded of your services as well. Can you ask for a better low-cost investment?

Local goodwill.Consider giving away low-cost items at a community evenin exchange for a mention as a sponsor. This will result in potential customersgetting your promotional products for future use. Overall goodwill towardsyour company gets your neighbors thinking about how great it was of youto have provided free items at the event.

Corporate gifts. If you have higher-end clientele, a simple tee shirt maynot cut it, but a gourmet gift set or a stunning desk accessory may impressyour potential client and leave a lasting impression in his or her memory.

Employee rewards. Not all promotional products need to be used for ad-vertising. You can also provide employee incentives and small reminders atyour company parties with these items. It’s always good to remember thata happy employee is a productive employee and just because you have asmall business doesn’t mean you can’t afford to reward your employees fromtime to time.

Now that you’ve got some ideas as to why you should purchase promotional products, be sure to contact us at Design Pros Inc.

We’re always happy to help.

It’ll be remembered longer on paper.Paper stands the test of time.

We have printed documents dating back over two mil-lennia that can still be read and enjoyed today. No system up-grades or hard drive crashes can prevent us from going to amuseum and viewing the original Dead Sea Scrolls or Leonardoda Vinci’s hand-drawn Vitruvian Man. And there are no multipleversions of Beethoven’s symphonies to confuse us, just his pre-cious handwritten scores.

The timelessness of paper is not reserved for the world’s greatmasterpieces. That scrapbook marking the special milestones inyour life or those treasured handwritten notes tucked away in yourkeepsake box enjoy the same longevity – and continue to giveyou pleasure every time you see them. But seeing them is just partof the experience. You can also hold these precious memories inyour hand, eliciting emotions no computer screen can. The Greet-ing Card Association (GCA) has researched the emotional bond as-sociated with handwritten messages and found that nearlyone-third of respondents to a national survey said theykeep the special cards they receive “forever.”1

That said, it’s not just your heart that understands thepower of paper, so does your mind. A number of studies havebeen conducted on the efficacy of learning on screen comparedto paper, and it has been proven that paper is a bettertool for fully assimilating information. Researchers atCambridge University based this conclusion on a number offactors ranging from the ease and speed of visually/spa-tially locating content on a printed page compared toa screen, to the distractions of reading online, and thefunctionality of a screen-based document compared toa printed version (e.g. note taking, document sharing).2

Anne Magnan, a Norwegian researcher publishing in theJournal of Research in Reading, declared: “The feeling of liter-ally being in touch with the text is lost when your actions –clicking with the mouse, pointing on touch screens, or scrollingwith keys or on touch pads – takes place at a distance from thedigital text, which is somehow, somewhere inside the com-puter, the e-book or the mobile phone. Materiality mat-ters... One main effect of the intangibility of the digitaltext is that of making us read in a shallower, less fo-cused way.”3And, according to the experts at Cambridge, lessfocus speaks to a lack of full understanding and compromiseslong-term retention of information.

University-level students have also participated in studiesto assess whether traditional textbooks are still the way to go,or if an e-book or pdf lecture notes serve them better in theiracademic pursuits. A recent example is the Kindle DX experimentconducted by the University of Virginia Darden School of Busi-ness, which revealed that 75-80% of its MBA students using thedevice would not recommend it for in-class learning. They feltthe eReader was too rigid for use in the fast-paced class-room environment, noting that you can’t move be-

tween pages, documents, charts and graphs simply oreasily enough compared to the paper alternatives.4

An earlier pilot study at Princeton University con-cluded that the classroom experience was “somewhatworsened” by using an eReader compared to printedtextbooks.5Participating students admitted that the absenceof paper documents made group discussions difficult and thatit was hard to go back and review e-materials later in the se-mester. They also felt that the inability to efficiently take noteson an e-book lessened retention.

Based on the work of researchers from around the world, one could draw a parallel between the relative permanence ofpaper and how long the memories you get from it last. Whilethe screen is by nature more illusory, paper remains with youas long as you want it to. So whether you think you might bea 21st century Great Master, the next Dan Brown or even ifyou’re just a fan of the personalized note or an avid scrapbooker, your work can leave a lasting impression in the minds andhearts of your friends and fans.

Don’t Print This EmailWe’ve all seen the message.

Tucked neatly into emails, between a friendly signoff and aninspirational quote, it advises readers to think about the environmentbefore they print — and suggests that if they still choose to hit thebig green button, they’ll be striking a major blow to our nation’sforests. But how many of us have hovered our cursors over the word“print,” trying to choose between the future of our planet and theability to annotate documents, take home a hard copy, or work on areport with all our resources at hand? Paper has always been anessential part of our lives, from our first days in school toour everyday work on the job. So, why the sudden push to“delete” this valued resource, in favor of an all-digital world — themuch-talked-about, but seldom-realized “paperless” lifestyle?

The phenomenon began with the best of intentions. Afterall, who wouldn’t agree that paper is a valuable resource, andsenseless waste should be avoided? But what about the aspectsof paper that just can’t be replicated in the digital realm? From

ease of sharing documents, to a familiar sense of com-fort, to the way the brain processes information, paperstill plays an important role in our lives. And paper manu-facturers like Domtar are taking great care to ensure it also playsa role in supporting sustainable forest management. So, maybeit’s not a matter of choosing “to print or not to print,” as much asmaking the right choice for the task at hand. Below are a fewguidelines to help decide when to print, when to save, and why.

Think before you print. Good advice. Everyone should beresponsible when considering whether or not an item should beprinted. It may help to think about whether you really need a print-out, and how long you plan to keep it. If it’s an email you can quicklytake care of on-screen, and won’t need to reference again, ask your-self whether printing it out really adds value. If not, you may wantto skip printing this time. However, if an item needs to be read indetail, written on, and remembered, paper is a reasonable and re-sponsible choice — especially when it’s Domtar paper.

Set the records straight. If you’ve ever been audited, youmay have an idea of what it means to keep accurate records —and perhaps more importantly, what it means if you don’t. Harddrives crash, backup systems often fail; and many of us simplyfail to keep accurate digital records in the first place. Organizingfinancial documents on paper lets us see every transaction as aphysical object, and file it in a physical place. Maybe that’s whypaper has been proven to do a better job in helping us keep trackof money matters. Just be sure to save a copy off-site.

Collaborate and connect. When it comes to connectingwith friends online, social media sites have a definite advantage— but in business, sharing and discussing a printed documentis still extremely efficient. Maybe it’s because it’s easier to ignorean email than a stack of papers in your inbox. You can jot downmessages, affix sticky notes, and show it and discuss with a col-league, your team, or your boss. Paper plays an important rolein the way we do business —and when it’s used responsibly, itcan improve productivity and efficiency.

Make an investment that’s worth more than thepaper it’s printed on. It’s not just about what you print — it’salso about what you print it on. By choosing an environmentallyresponsible paper from Domtar, you help ensure a sustainable fu-ture for the forests that provide the paper you use every day. Domtarpaper is certified by internationally recognized organizations likethe Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) and Sustainable ForestryInitiative® (SFI®). Domtar is committed to responsible forest man-agement, and has a preference for FSC certification where available.Sustainable forest management practices include the maintainingof High Conservation Value Forests, habitat protection for endan-gered species, biodiversity for healthy forest ecosystems and safeplaces for animals to repopulate and plant species to thrive.Unlike fossil fuels, gemstones and natural gas, which take millionsof years to be restored, trees are a truly renewable resource — andthe forest products industry plants millions of new trees each day.Paper is also 100% recyclable. So, once you print that document (onan environmentally responsible paper), don’t just throw it away —give it a second life.

Get together. Both electronic and print media are impor-tant, and both impact the environment in their own ways — fromthe use of natural resources, to energy consumption, to batteriesand hazardous waste. But with the right paper and the right choices,it is possible to communicate efficiently, and responsibly. So, shouldyou print this email? (We’ll leave this one up to you.)

Guilt is a useless emotion. Yet “think before you print”messages at the bottom of e-mails seem to want tomake people feel bad about printing out documentseven when they really need them for work or personalbusiness. In reality, both electronic and print media im-pact the environment in their own ways – and bothhave important roles to play in our communications. Itdoesn’t have to be one or the other. It’s a question ofbalance and choice of the right tool for the task at hand.

Paper because Paper has proven itself as an effective method of com-munication for over 2,000 years. It remains a staple ofbusiness correspondence1 and is used in millions of of-fices worldwide because it offers benefits that simplyaren’t provided by digital medium. We absorb informa-tion more fully when reading it on paper compared toon screen2. We work better together when discussing aprinted document than through digital exchange3.Keeping paper records of our financial transactions canhelp us keep better track of our money and save us a lotof grief if problems arise4. These are just some of the ex-amples of why paper continues to have its place intoday’s digital world. And there are many environmen-tally-responsible options on the market, like Domtar’sEarthChoice line, that make paper a good choice formeeting your communication needs on those occasionswhen digital just won’t do. Plus, once you are throughusing your printed documents, you can always givethem a second life by recycling them!

The fact is… There are environmental repercussions to the use ofboth printed and digital media, and both sides of thestory should be taken into account in your decisionabout what’s “green”. Here are some facts you may ormay not know: Paper is 100% recyclable. In fact, it isone of the most recycled products on the planet5. Thereare also many responsible paper choices on the market, like Domtar’s EarthChoice line, made with fiber sourcedfrom forests managed in accordance with strict environ-mental standards and/or with post-consumer fiber. Theadoption of such standards has helped make forestry, paper and packaging among the most sustainable in-dustries in existence.6 Some will suggest to you thatgoing digital is better for the planet and that printing issomehow irresponsible. But the repercussions of going“paperless” are complex and, when looked at closely, show that the increasing use of information and com-munication technologies has serious implications for theenvironment.7 Feeling a bit confused? Well, here is onething you can be sure of: Domtar is committed to mak-ing paper in a way that considers the good of our planet– and you can print responsibly on our paper.

The state of today’s forests You are not destroying the forest when you use printedmedia and paper made by Domtar. In fact, contrary towhat many say and believe, North America’s forests(where we get our fiber from) remain healthy and pro-lific. Part of the reason for this is because we haveadopted responsible forest management practicesunder internationally respected forest managementstandards like the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®)and Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI). Among otherthings, these standards require that for every tree har-vested in a managed forest, several more are replantedor naturally regenerated in its place. Sustainable forestmanagement practices also help protect habitats andrare or threatened ecosystems8, providing safe places foranimals to repopulate and plant species to thrive. Trees, which are the primary raw material for making paper, are a renewable resource. What’s more, only a tiny per-centage of the world’s trees are being cut down forpaper production (e.g. about 1% in Canada9), comparedto other human activities like agriculture, urban devel-opment and mining, which removes forestland perma-nently. So if you love the forest, using Domtar paperresponsibly is a sound environmental choice.

Both paper and digital media have environmental foot-prints. Both also have their purpose and undeniablebenefits. To suggest the contrary in message at the bot-tom of an electronic message is misleading and aims toguilt people into making an “either/or” choice that justisn’t necessary. There are many reasons why you can feelOK about printing an e-mail if it helps you be more ef-fective in your work or life – especially when it’s onDomtar paper. _____________________________

Print is anart form. When you come across something that just blows youaway, you’ll sometimes think to yourself “Now THAT is awork of art!”

It could be anything, from a hot rod to a great pair ofstilettos or, more conventionally, a painting or a sculp-ture. It can also be a beautiful printed piece.

The printing press was invented in the 15thcentury by the German Johannes Gutenberg – and it hasbeen wowing audiences ever since. This early technologygave rise to an explosion of printed documents, and pro-vided access to information and enlightenment to thereading and listening public. Illustrations soon wereadded to the texts, bringing them an even broader levelof appeal and opening up a new world for non-literateaudiences. Political and religious messages were com-municated via caricatures and stories told via comic strips– often without a single word on the paper. It was anartistic revolution for the masses!

Print remains a medium of choice for today’sreaders, despite the growing appeal of e-publications. Inthe U.S. alone, a projected 316,480 new printed booksand editions were published in 2010, a 5% increase fromthe previous year.1 If you factor in self-published books, that number increases exponentially. In fact, Create-Space, the self-publishing arm of Amazon.com, says thatits books increased by 80% from 2009 to 2010.2

And speaking of books, it’s a simple fact thatmany people do judge a book by its cover. No one reads abook before buying it and authors/publishers have justseconds to grab the reader, so it’s crucial that the coverand back cover texts be compelling. An eye-catching andskillfully printed dust jacket can actually mean the differ-ence between success and obscurity for an author.

In a similar vein, there’s the enduring impactof album and CD cover art. This distinctive art form is afavorite topic of discussion for musicologists and musiclovers alike. Case in point, Rolling Stone magazine has aspecial section of its website devoted to the top 100album covers.3 Rock/pop music historian Robert Bensondiscusses how a listener’s emotional connection to analbum encompasses both the music and the artwork thataccompanies it: “At times cover art is part of that emo-tional connection we have with music. Anyone who hasowned a record collection has spent time pouring over analbum cover while listening to the music.”4

Many fine artists also revel in the intimacy of paper andink, using time-honored techniques like the woodcut, silk screen/serigraphy, etching, intaglio, aquatint, monotype and calligraphy to convey their visions.5

Artists around the world are pushing the boundaries ofwhat print can do, bringing renewed life to a craft thathas stimulated the human senses for centuries. Profes-sional photographers also often favor print for exhibit-ing their art, even if their cameras are digital.

Indeed, experts will tell you that it’sthanks to print that we still enjoy much of the artisticoutput of the last several centuries. They also expressconcern over the loss of contemporary art pieces thatare strictly digital: “The threat is very real that, unlesswe do something, we will have a ‘lost generation’ interms of our cultural heritage,” says Dr. David Ander-son, who is helping to save the more complex art-works of the digital age from oblivion. “Pastgenerations captured who they were and what theydid via museums and books, but the pace of techno-logical development in the digital age has now out-stripped our capacity for preservation.”6

And let’s not forget the craft involved intoday’s technology-driven commercial printing. Themodern printing press is a magical engine of designthat can churn out exciting print pieces through so-phisticated techniques like foil stamping, embossing,

and finishing. Just think of the stylish packaging ofthe Apple products or a slick print ad in a magazine oreven a clever point of sale display. Thanks to digitaland on-demand printing, print customers can orderjust what they need, when they need it – with spec-tacular visual results. Online service providers evenallow you to create your own work of art, printing per-sonalized books with your family pics and stories.Print can be a treat for the senses and food for the soul. It’s an art in and of itself with a special ability to show-case the miracles that simple paper and ink can do.
