Mid-century Modern furniture mixed with bold American Crafts-

man pieces look terrific in a rustic lake house of the 1930s. Develop

an eye, look at interior design books, ask for help, have a plan—

then buy what you love, one piece at a time.

Good furniture is like quartersawn clapboards, while

cheap furniture is like aluminum siding: They both look tidy at

the outset. But wooden clapboards develop patina and settle cozily

with the building. Aluminum gets sun spots, dents, and loose edges.

In the same way, cheap furniture starts to look bad long before you

not? The Windsor chair has

not been out of production

since its appearance ca.1724.

So isn’t a new Windsor chair

simply part of an unbroken

continuum? Stickley’s

Craftsman furniture is being

made new according to

original shop drawings at

an old Stickley furniture

manufactory in New York

State. The company calls

these pieces “reissues.”

have to throw it out. Good furniture lasts a long time, and when

the fabric finally wears out, reupholstering is worthwhile.

Costs vary widely, of course, depending on the type of

piece, its materials and degree of complexity, its upholstery, and

whether it is a production piece, semi-custom, or a one-of-a-kind

work of art. But all good furniture is expensive, an investment in

good looks and longevity. Given the cost, it makes sense to buy

pieces with timeless design. Wait until you can afford good furni-

ture. Cheap furniture will be a disappointment from the start,

headed for the trash. Good furniture is worth waiting for. And

most people will indeed have to wait, furnishing one room at a

time, even buying one good piece a year. In the meantime, the mat-

tress can rest on a department-store metal frame. Buy the Shera-

ton dining table you really want, and use folding chairs while you

save for the good ones. Use wicker in the living room until the day

it can be replaced and move on to life on the porch.

Furnishing a house is a very personal matter. Most peo-

ple do it without a great deal of forethought, mixing what they have,

what they inherited, and what they like in an idiosyncratic overlap

of function and whimsy. Others take a more studied approach.
