Course Description : Pediatric 2 is a clinical course. It is taught to Level 11 medical Students who already completed the paediatric-1 course; the course consists of three main parts clinical, theory and practical. The clinical part includes the formal bedside teaching, ward rounds and emergency room night duties. The theoretical part includes Seminars, lectures and selected topics integrated with other basic and/or clinical departments. The practical part consists of sessions conducted in the clinical skill lab.
General Objectives:
By the end of the course student should be able to:
1. Define the common medical Pediatric problems. . Explain its pathogenesis and establish a management strategy.
2. Determine the accepted values of basic tools of investigations used in pediatric age group and develop the ability to interpret the abnormal results, so that to establish probable diagnosis and to construct a reasonable management plan .
3. Acquire the basic skill of common procedures done in pediatrics (Establishment of venous access - Lumbar puncture, Basic life support).
4. Establish the ability to communicate with family & child in a professional understanding way and take an organized history .
5. Establish the skill of doing a systematic examination to children with establishment of best approach based on patient’s age .
6. Formulate problem list and differential diagnosis based on the history and physical examination .
7. Recognize very sick children and children in acute life threatening condition, and establish the appropriate initial immediate management (investigations, therapy or referral to the appropriate specialties).

8. Acquire the skill of presenting and discussing cases and problems to audience which is essential for graduate’s ability to teach, lead and manage medical problems .
9. Develop the ability to do literature search and obtain knowledge from different sources .
10. Show the highest-standards of care of children and families as regards ethical and professional behavior .
11. Attain the Attitude of understanding & respecting the psychosocial makeup of family & patients, approaching them in a compassionate way considering patients best interest .
12. Improve his ability to communicate verbally & in written with colleagues & patients .

Bedside Teaching:
The student will be clerking a case in the ward. Each student is expected to do a minimum of 3 bedside sessions signed by the tutor who will give confidential scores in his own records , getting the signature of the tutor by the student is extremely important. Cases for bedside teaching will be posted on Bulletin Board (Ped. Medical Ward) on daily basis
Ward Rounds:
Students will be divided into Subgroups to join the ward, NICU & PICU rounds of consultants. Each student will write daily progress notes in his files on his patients.

Students’ Seminar:
The seminar is designed to give an opportunity for the student to prepare the subject in depth by referring to various sources and to present it in a coherent manner in front of the whole class. Tutors from other departments (mainly basic dept.) will be invited to attend the session. This presentation will also be confidentially marked in the tutor’s records. Getting the signature of the tutor in the student record sheet is mandatory. It is students’ responsibility to contact the tutor in advance to discuss and distribute the topic.

Written Cases:
The student should submit neatly written case records of patients clerked on the wards (minimum of 3 cases). The case should follow the usual format of history, physical examination including diagnosis, differential diagnoses, investigation, management and discharge summary. All reports should be hand written (not by computer). Any duplicated reports will not be accepted and all of them will be scored Zero. The first , second and third reports should be submitted to the tutor NOT LATER THAN THE END OF THE 2 nd 4 nd week and 6 th week respectively. Any reports submitted after these dates will not be accepted and will be scored ZERO. Scores will be also confidential
Skill Lab. :
Two sessions of skill Lab. Will be conducted to each group. Tutor will call at least two students to perform the acquired skills who are going to be confidentially scored for this. Absent students will be scored ZERO. Students should get the signature of the tutor so as to trace their scores.

Evaluation and Assessment:
The evaluation and assessment are in two stages i.e. continuous assessment including mid-course examination in the fourth week and the final examination in the eighth week. The details of the assessment and evaluation are as follows:
(A) Continuous Assessment 50 Marks
i. Bedside presentation, Skill Lab 10 ii Morning presentation. 5
iii. Written case records (Minimum of 3) 10iv. Seminar presentation 5 v. Mid-course written examination (7th week)

* Objective Structured Non-Clinical Examination 5(OSNCE). It includes slides, X-rays, data interpretationsand items used in Pediatric clinical practice.
* Fifteen percent of total evaluation will be through online activities and will be detected through the course.
(B) Final Examination 50 Marks

(b) The students record sheet(Page 28) is a very important document to score your continuous assessment. It is your responsibility to complete it as required for each session. Please note that any session without the name and signature of the tutor will not be counted. The deadline for submission of your sheet is Wednesday 10.2.1433 H at 1 pm. You may submit them directly to the course coordinators or to Department Secretary. Any sheet submitted after the deadline WILL NOT be accepted and will be scored ZERO.
