DESANTOS FOUNDATION Empowering Lives!

August 2021 Dear Thank you for being open to the possibility of supporting our DeSantos Foundation’s 10th Annual Walk from Toronto to Niagara Falls Here are some details about our fundraising initiative.

My name is Veronica De Santos and community involvement has always been an integral part of my life. It is the foundation of our philosophy at my martial arts school, DeSantos Premier Martial Arts (DPMA), as evident in the Principles of Black Belt and Student Pledge our student’s practice. We believe in contributing positive, empowering programs and vital resources to those living in our community both locally and globally.

DPMA is incredibly active in our community from helping with school fun fairs, community events and providing anti-bullying workshops free for elementary schools. The DeSantos Foundation is an extension of our community efforts and is a way for students to further give back.

The DeSantos Foundation has partnered with a community charitable organization, ADHIKA - An organization that aims to assist community efforts to build and empower themselves so that they might live out their own goals, wishes and desires.

With this partnership, The DeSantos Foundation provides a platform for DeSantos Premier Martial Arts students and families to give back to our communities. This is a monetary fund that supports socially disadvantaged youth and families within our communities, both locally and globally, by providing increased resources to help with access to education. Whether it’s supporting breakfast/lunch programs, school supplies and equipment or clothing, the goal is to help each child reach their highest potential.

To learn more about the DeSantos Foundation and recipients of our fund, please review the enclosed “DeSantos Foundation Brochure”.

For the past 10 years, DeSantos Foundation has organized an official 4-day walk from Toronto to Niagara Falls – From the Tower to the Falls! This 140+ km trek is hard, cold, wet, fun, character-building and inspiring and is open to anyone who like to join our students who are testing for Black Belt. This year’s walk is September 23-26, 2021.

Our goal this year is to raise $30,000. We have approximately 30 participants registered to walk either 1, 2, or 3 days and 10 dedicated souls have registered for all four days.

Throughout the year, participants hosts a variety of fundraising events to help offset some of the costs associated with the walk such as food and accommodations. However, we think our efforts would go even farther with your help.

Your donation would provide much needed support for all participants. We have a group of volunteer drivers who support the group each day by providing them with water, snacks, first aid supplies, encouragement and motivation! We need help to purchase these items along with daily meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and nightly accommodations at area hotels.

As an official event sponsor, we would promote you and/or your company in any advertising related to the Walk including, print materials and on social media. In essence, you become part of the DeSantos Foundation family.

To become one of our official event sponsors, please reach out to us at [email protected] and either myself or a member of my team will be happy to assist you.

With you by our side we’re sure to achieve this year’s fundraising goal!

Warm Regards,

Veronica De Santos President, DeSantos Foundation

DESANTOS FOUNDATION

Community involvement has always been an integral part of our philosophy at DeSantos Premier Martial Arts, from the Principles of Black Belt and Student Pledge. We believe in contributing positive, empowering programs and vital resources to those living in our community both locally and globally. The DeSantos Foundation, previously the DeSantos Access Fund, was created in 1990. Veronica De Santos, the founder of DeSantos Martial Arts, began hosting fundraisers to help charitable organizations and members of the community. She wanted to create events that involved the families who were members of her martial arts school.

There have been numerous fundraising events and community partners over the years and we feel honoured to have worked with all of them. Veronica was in search of an event that would truly require participants to search within themselves and truly be challenged and for an organization that focused mainly on youth as that had become the main focus of the charitable work she was doing within the school. In 2012 we partnered with ADHIKA, a community charitable organization that aims to assist community efforts to build and empower themselves so that they might live out their own goals, wishes and desires and in 2015 the DeSantos Access Fund gave way to the DeSantos Foundation. The DeSantos Foundation’s main funding campaign is the annual Walk to Niagara Falls. All students who are in a Black Belt Training Cycle (on course to receive their black belt that year) participate in the Walk.

VISION Empowering the lives of youth by providing access to resources essential for a strong educational foundation. VALUES Compassion Every child matters and deserves an opportunity to flourish. Dedication Committed to solutions and resources to help youth in our community build a foundation for success. Integrity Honesty and respect are at the heart of everything we do.

First stop on the walk to Niagara is Downtown Alternative Public School, one of the recipients of funds from the DeSantos Foundation.

MISSION We support socially and economically disadvantaged youth and young adults within our communities, both locally and globally, by providing resources to assist with access to education because every child matters! Donations provide us with the ability to:

• Support school lunch and breakfast programs • Provide clothing and school supplies to families who suffer financial

hardships • Provide classroom supplies/equipment to schools in need of additional

support • Offer free anti-bullying workshops to elementary schools in our

communities • Provide scholarships for martial arts programs

REGISTRATION AND WALK KITS

REGISTRATION All participants of the walk are to register through the Canada Helps website: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/adhika-philippine-development-concerns/p2p/desantos_annual_walk_niagara_2021/ Registration fee is $25 and includes 1 walk t-shirt. Additional t-shirts can be purchased for $20.

UNDER 18 YEARS OLD Youth under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult for the walk and especially in the hotel rooms. If a parent is unable to accompany their child on the walk (either as a walker or volunteer) they must designate an adult who will act as guardian/chaperone for their child. This could be another parent who is walking or volunteering. Staff CANNOT act as a guardian/chaperone for your child as their focus is on the organization and logistical details of the walk for everyone.

WALK KITS Walk kits will be available for pick up. These kits include your walk t-shirt, information on volunteer drivers, wrist bands and updated route information.

TRAINING BEFORE THE WALK

TRAINING Training and preparation for the walk is paramount for a successful experience. Do not underestimate the distance or the toll multiple days will have on your body. Start walking now so you have time to increase kilometres. Join the practice walks as often as possible and in January and February add additional days.

Walking two days in a row of 25+ kilometres will help prepare for what you will experience on the walk Many of our instructors and black belts have participated in the walk multiple years. Have conversations with them about their training and what they did to prepare.

FOOTWEAR

Socks perform four basic functions: cushioning, protection, warmth, and absorption of moisture off the skin. The sock fabric and weave will determine how well they do each. Socks made from synthetic fabrics wick moisture away from the skin and through the sock to its outer surface where it can evaporate. Avoid 100%cotton socks.

You may have to change your socks when your feet are wet to avoid blistering. Synthetics offer protection against blisters caused by moisture, poor fit, hot spots, slippage, and friction.

Double-layer socks can help reduce or eliminate blisters. The two layers move against each other instead of against your skin.

The choice of socks is crucial. The basic principle is that the thicker the sock, the more moisture it can hold and the longer it will take to dry. Furthermore, heavy socks are most often overkill and will lead to continuously wet feet from excess perspiration.

Pack multiple pairs of socks for each day as changing your socks throughout the day, help keep feet healthy and hopefully blister free.

Shoes - It is imperative you don’t begin this walk with brand new shoes. Try purchasing new shoes a few weeks before the start of the walk so you can break them in. Equally as bad are shoes which are too old and no longer provide the support needed for the long walks. Ideally, for those walking multiple days, you want to have 2 pairs of shoes so if one pair get wet you have a dry pair to wear.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR FEET Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you. Hopefully you have completed enough practice walks to get a sense of how your feet feel walking for such a long distance.

Changing socks and/or shoes, soaking feet when stopped for lunch and letting your feet breathe by taking off socks and shoes over lunch can all help with blister prevention.

Pre-Walk Preparation includes reducing calluses with a callus file or creams, getting the skin on your feet in the best possible condition, and trimming your toenails correctly.

HYDRATION – DEHYRDATION & SODIUM A subject often overlooked is the effect on the skin of dehydration and loss of important electrolytes. Long periods of physical exercise cause stress to the extremities as fluid accumulates in the hands and feet. Fingers and toes often swell as they retain fluid because of low blood sodium. This causes foot problems as the soft, waterlogged tissues become vulnerable to the rubbing and pounding as you continue to walk or run.

Make sure to drink plenty of water and if you can, alternating with a sports drink may also help with this. Energy bars and gels (found at many sports stores) can also help.

HOTELS Below is the list of hotels we use along the walk route. We try our best to secure the best rates possible. In an effort to keep the costs down, we encourage 3-4 guests in a room. You can of course choose to

have your own room.

If sharing a room, one adult will call to confirm the room with their credit card info. All other guests of

the room will pay their share to the person who confirmed the room. All rates and total costs owed will

be given to you ahead of time. Best practice is to pay your share BEFORE the first day of the walk.

MEALS

Every year we petition corporate sponsors and ask if they will sponsor a meal for the walkers. As this can vary year to year, you will be notified closer to the walk about meals you may have to purchase.

Snacks – Water and snacks are provided everyday but some walkers still choose to pack their preferred snacks.

Breakfast - Downtown Alternative School provides breakfast on Tuesday. Hotels include free breakfast.

Lunch – All lunches are covered.

Dinner – We try as much as possible to help the 4-day walkers with dinners. Wednesday and Thursday nights are sponsored and all walkers are treated to dinner on Friday night which we host at Clifton Victoria Inn.

Our goal is to have ALL meals completely sponsored for all walkers. If you know of anyone who could help with this, please let us know.

WALK DAY CHECK INS

T-SHIRTS You are asked to wear your walk t-shirt for each day you are walking. If you have walk t-shits from previous years, you can use those, otherwise for multiple day walkers, you will need to wash t-shirt every night or buy additional shirts.

BIB NUMBER The bib numbers help us to keep track of who is on the course and if they have made it to each checkpoint. Bib numbers are to be worn on the front of your body. Small safety pins are included so you can attach to your t-shirt. If you are walking all four days, please be sure to take off and lay flat at night so you can wear it again the next day.

WRIST BANDS These neon bands are used to help identify your belongings that will be moved in cars from hotel to hotel. PLEASE USE A BLACK SHARPIE AND WRITE YOUR NAME AND TELEPHONE NUMBER ON EACH BAND. This will make it easy to identify your belongings and you will need to know which vehicle your bags are in. Each walker will be given 4 bands and if you require more, please let us know. Three bands are for your bags and one is for your wrist. This helps the drivers to identify which bags they have.

BAGS / PERSONAL BELONGINGS Each day we have volunteers who load their cars with the bags of the walkers. It is important that each bag is clearly identified with a band that has your name and phone number on it. You will be informed as to which vehicle your bags are in should you need access to supplies such as socks, jackets, hats, sunscreen, etc. It is also recommended that you walk with a small lightweight backpack to carry essentials. If you need new socks but the person with your socks is stationed 6K away, you don’t have to wait and can change immediately.

WASHROOMS The routes are designed to remain in high traffic areas as much as possible so there are public washrooms you can use. If you urgently need a washroom and there isn’t one around, one of the drivers can drive you to the closest one and then get you back on the road.

COMMUNICATION Please make sure we have your cell number as there are many texts/calls that can happen throughout the day where you need to be informed. Sometimes there are unforeseen road closures, etc. and we need to adjust the route and will need to contact you while you are on the road. Be sure to charge your phones at night and whenever possible while stopped.

DAILY CHECK INS

The morning of each walk we will take “attendance” to ensure all registered walkers for that day are present. Each volunteer driver is given a post approximately every 3K and they wait at their respective posts until all walkers have past them. At each post you will be asked to check in so the driver can check that you have arrived and have moving to the next check in post. Some of these posts will alsohave snacks and water.

Below are the start times and location for each day. Please note the start times may vary slightly.
