What we have done here is to list just a few events which made an impact on the placid face of the school and stirred responses in our students. The slogan for this year is ‘Aspire to Inspire’. What does it mean to the students? To aspire means to aim at, to be ambitious, to hope for, to target; and to inspire is to stimulate or impel, to motivate for further action. So, when everybody targets perfection, it becomes achievable. What counts in the ultimate analysis is the absorption of values of social relevance, like empathy, sympathy, compassion, fellowship, camaraderie, collaboration, cooperation, harmony, rapport, relationships, and, yes, mercy in this year of mercy. And, this is the message of Christmas too. The Prince of Peace, born in a manger, had nowhere to lay his head. His arrival marked the beginning of a new revolutionary era in world history. He showed the way of peace to all men of goodwill. This goodwill comprises justice, peace, fellowship, brotherhood, and fraternal sharing. The projects of societal involvement are aimed at fostering this spirit of sharing among our students. Sharing and caring are lessons they learn along with academic projects. But as the MSFS Founder, Fr Peter Marie Mermier, taught, ‘Education of the heart is the heart of education.’ The New Year is just around the corner, biding its time to appear. It brims with promises. May your New Year resolutions find fulfillment in its course; and may prosperity and peace accompany you throughout 2017. Getting Started

The new academic year 2016-17 started with a staff meeting on 24 May 2016, presided over by Rev Fr Roy Plathottathil, School Principal. In his opening remarks, Fr Roy welcomed the newly appointed teachers to SFS, and

outlined the general policy for the year. An election was conducted for the post of staff secretary and assistant secretary: Mrs Neena Baby and Mrs Blessey Johnson, respectively. The academic coordinators chosen for this year comprise Mrs Lizy Sunny Stephen, Mrs Marykutty Joseph, and Mrs Maria Abraham.Mr Sunny Kurian, Mrs Leelamma Thomas, Mrs Sibeena Joseph and Mrs VijiKannan were chosen CCE coordinators.

Spiritual PreparationA retreat for the Catholic students of Classes IX, X and XII on 30 May prepared them spiritually for the year ahead, while the non-Catholic students of these classes were given a seminar on moral values by Mr Nandu, another expert in the field. Rev Fr Dijo Koikkara from Trichur was the preacher of the retreat.

The new academic year 2016-17 got off to a vigorous start on Wednesday, 01 June, with an inaugural meeting clubbed with a celebration of the birthday of the Vice Principal, Rev Fr Subin Puzhakkara. The program which started at 9.30 a.m. was presided over by Rev Fr Joby Mattathil, Superior and Rector at SFS Seminary. A holy Mass was offered for the school at the quadrangle, attended by all Catholic students and teachers.

Next was the cutting of the birthday cake by Fr Subin Puzhakkara, the Vice Principal. He was then felicitated on behalf of the school by Rev Fr Roy who also announced the theme for the year: ASPIRE TO INSPIRE! Fr Joby presented a birthday gift and a card to FrSubin who expressed his thanks to everyone for celebrating his day with solemnity.

The World Environment Day was observed at the school on 03 June under the auspices of Mission Green which named the program ‘Bhoomikkoru Kuda’. Dr K P Joy, Chairman,

State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, chaired the meeting which focused on the need to protect the Earth’s environment without degrading it with pollutants. Dr Joy also donated saplings for students to plant and to care for.

Welcome to Class XI & Release of DeSalite Fragrance

The inauguration of the Class XI students was clubbed with the awards presentation ceremony for school toppers at AISSE and AISSCE 2016 on 06 June. The Class XI students were welcomed with a rose flower each. Chief guest of the day, Shri Suresh Kurup MLA, lighted the traditional lamp. Symbolizing the light of knowledge, Fr Roy presented lighted candles to each student. Class XII students performed a few cultural vignettes which added colour to the celebration. A number of speakers too felicitated the students on their brilliant performance at the exams. The school annual magazine DeSalite Fragrance was released by the chief guest on this occasion. The program ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Head Boy Jobin Jose.

Meet the Candidates & School Parliament Election

The “Meet the Candidates” program was held on Thursday, 09 June, when school parliament candidates gave fiery speeches to impress their voters. Some 12 candidates put in their appearance.The election to the school parliament was conducted the following day, Friday, 10 June. Students of Classes V-XII cast their votes and elected the following: Sooraj Shaji – Head Boy; Rinnu Elizabeth Reju – Head Girl; Robert James – Vice Head Boy; Ivy Treesa Siby – Vice Head Girl.

Hello to KG KidsA warm welcome was accorded to the kids who joined the LKG this year on Saturday, 11 June. They walked into the school quadrangle, accompanied by their parents. The chief guest at the function was Mrs Reshmi Sreedhar, a certified international corporate trainer from Bangalore. The kids were made to feel at home as the school was tastefully decorated with buntings and balloons. They were presented with gifts and toffees. The entertainment presented by the UKG students added flavour to the occasion.

Investiture CeremonyThe Investiture Ceremony was held on Wednesday, 15 June, to invest the newly elected school parliament office bearers with their sashes and badges. The Circle Inspector of Police, Ettumanoor, Shri Jayakumar C, presided over the function as the chief guest. While he presented the sashes to the head boy, head girl, vice head boy and vice head girl, the badges for the house captains, vice captains and club captains were given away by the teachers in charge.

General Manager’s visit

Newly elected Provincial Superior of the South West India Province of the MSFS and the general manager of our school, Rev Dr Benny Koottanal, was accorded a hearty welcome to the school, along with the Provincial Bursar, Fr Vinod Kanat, on Friday, 17 June. School Principal, Fr Roy, presented both of them with mementos and golden shawls. In his address to the teaching staff, Dr Benny Koottanal, appreciated the teachers’ commitment to the school which helped to achieve 100 per cent results in the public examination. At the same time, he urged the teachers to be more effective than efficient.

Reading Makes Perfect

Fighting Drug Menace

‘Aksharapunchiri’ was the name of a programme organized by the Nallapaadam team members on 23 June in order to inculcate the reading habit among students. The teachers and students of SFS School contributed 1,000 books to the Headmistress of JBLP School, Peroor.

Under the auspices of the Nallapaadam project, the Social Science Department of the School conducted a programme on 24 June to disseminate awareness among the students about the ill-effects of intoxicating drugs. Senior civil police officer K R Arunkumar conducted a class for the students on drug abuse.

Haritham Organic Farming‘Haritham Organic Farming’ was a project under Nallapaadam auspices held on 05 July to develop a vegetable garden at the school. The students took a lot of trouble and prepared a small plot for paddy cultivation. This was the highlight of the program. Mrs Sherly Zacharias, Agricultural Officer, Ettumanoor, was the chief guest who inaugurated the function.

Youth Festival The School Youth Festival started on 21 July with Category I and Primers’ program. My talents, my interests, making a difference… was the theme of this year’s youth festival. The formal opening ceremony was held on Friday, 22 July. Shri Nipin Niravath, famous mentalist-magician and psychological entertainer, was the chief guest. Mr Niravath’s magic show was eye-catching as it also involved a good number of students in various performances. Various competitions were held on different stages where the students competed with their peers to outdo them. When the final results were announced, it was the Sapphire House which came on top, with Ruby second and Topaz third. The fest turned out to be a memorable celebration of talents.

Newspapers Matter

The Grandparents Day at the school was an occasion on 08 August to focus on the World Senior Citizens’ Day. The program at the school was christened Nanma Marakkoottam. There is so much goodness in our grandparents that they deserve a special celebration. Rev Fr Joseph Puthenpurackal, OFM Cap, was the guest speaker on this occasion. Fr Puthenpurackal wowed the audience with his humorous recollections.

Malayala Manorama organized a ’Vayanakkalari’ on 19 July to develop the reading skill among children. It was a joint venture of Manorama and SFS School. Mr Gopakumar, managing director, Dhwani music, who served as chief guest on the occasion presented newspapers to head boy Sooraj Shaji and head girl Rinnu Elizabeth Reju. Mr Benny, Manorama Bureau Chief at Ettumanoor, felicitated the function.

A seed distribution campaign was set in motion on 19 August at the school by Agricultural Officer Sherly Zacharia who delivered the presidential address. After her thought-provoking and informative lecture, she distributed seeds of vegetables to the students.

Greening the Earth

Food for the hungryConcern for fellow humans was what motivated our students and teachers when they brought food packets to be handed over to Navajeevan Trust on 27 July. This was a program supported by Nallapaadam authorities. These food packets were distributed among the patients at the Medical College Hospital.

SFS Career Academy

The SFS Career Academy has been functioning at the school campus for some time. However, its new building was not blessed until Rev Dr Abraham Vettuvelil, MSFS Superior General, visited the school and conducted the blessing on 26 August.

Visit to Snehabhavan

As part of the Nallapaadam project, the students of Class VII visited Snehabhavan, an old age home, at Puthanangady, Kottayam, on 01 September. Their celebration had the element of fellowship with the inmates of the home. Using the fund raised from donations by the students of the entire school, they prepared a sumptuous meal for the inmates. Snehabhavan Director Fr Philip Valiyakavunkal, Asst Director Sr Treesa, Sr Madona and Sr Sunita joined the celebration.

‘Guruvandanam’ was the name of a program arranged on 06 September to honour special school teachers, as part of a Nallapaadam project. The function took place at the Holy Cross Special School, Mannakkanad, where SFS students participated along with the students of that school. SFS School students put up a number of entertainment pieces, besides providing a sumptuous meal for them.

The Onam celebration this year was staggered into two sessions, the first on 08 September, for students of KG and Classes I-IV. Fr Shinto Parayankunnel was the chief guest and presided over the program which was clubbed with the Teachers Day celebration.

Higher class students kept their Onam program and Teachers Day celebration for 09 September when well-known Malayalam littérateur Benyamin was the guest of honour.

Maveli Visits Again

A field trip to Wayanad was organized under the auspices of Nallapaadam from 10 to 13 September. Accompanied by the students of Class VIII, they started the journey late in the evening on 10 September. The excursionists got an opportunity to observe from close quarters the lifestyles of the Wayanad tribals like Paniyar, Kurichyar, etc. who were pleased to perform their traditional dances for the visitors who used their charity collection to purchase clothes, study materials and toffees for them.

New PTA PresidentDuring a PTA Executive meeting on 25 September, DrJoji T Sebastian was elected PTA President for a term of two years. Fr. Roy, the secretory expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Zacharia Sebastian, the outgoing PTA president, for all the help and support he had extended to the school during the past two years.

Caring for the Destitute

Again, Nallapaadam had provided the inspiration to construct a lovely house for one of the non-teaching staff members in a suburb of Ettumanoor. The house was blessed and handed over to the beneficiary on 22 September. The house-warming ceremony was attended by Shri Suresh Kurup MLA besides a small gathering of near and dear ones.The blessing was performed by Fr Benny Koottanal, the MSFS Provincial Superior, accompanied by Fr Jose Parappillil who handed over the house key to the new owner. The Fathers at the School as well as Shri Zulfikkar, chief sub editor, Malayala Manorama, felicitated the function.

Exam-oriented ClassAn examination orientation class was conducted on 27 September for the higher secondary students by Shri Jins Parackal, a motivational trainer from Ernakulam. Students received valuable tips on overcoming exam fear and facing challenges with self-confidence. These techniques came as a godsend to the students.

PTM & Sadaram at Kottayam

The PTM of Class XI took place on Friday, 30 September. On the same day, students of VIII-X attended a programme called Sadaram at Kottayam, which aimed at creating awareness about the role and importance of grandparents in our lives. Students jotted down some worthwhile messages on the charts kept there, befitting the occasion.

Independence DayThe Independence Day was celebrated with pomp and flair as usual. Fr Parappillil spoke on the importance of Independence Day in the life of the nation and recalled the sacrifices of bygone patriots. Fr Roy urged the students to value their freedom and appreciate the struggle for it in pre-Independence days. A few songs and tableaux lent colour and verve to the celebration.

Love Goes Far

Gandhi Jayanthi this year was celebrated a little away from the school campus, at the Holy Cross Special School, Mannakkanad. Our students cleaned the school premises there and planted different varieties of saplings on their road sides. The program was inaugurated by Shri P C Kurian, Grama Panchayat President of Kuravilangad.

The KG students’ kids fest, The Treasure Hunt, was spread over three days, 3-5 October. Chief guest Dr Rafiq Ansar, Consultant Psychiatrist, General Hospital, Alleppey, lighted the lamp.

Buoyancy 2016 was conducted on our school grounds on 07 October; it was a joint venture of Special Olympics Bharat, Unified Sports, and Nallapaadam of Malayala Manorama. Students from around 30 schools participated in the games and won prizes for different items.The awards presentation took place at 3.00 pm the same afternoon. The guest at this function was the Municipal Chairman of Ettumanoor, Shri James Thomas Plakkithottiyil. Present on this occasion was a bevy of VIPs including Shri Mathew Vadakkel, Chairman, Association of Intellectually Disabled; celebrity guest Smt Devi Chandana; Shri Sunish Thomas, chief sub editor, Malayala Manorama; Sr Rani, Programme Manager & Secretary, Special Olympics Bharat, Kerala; Sr Reji SJC, State Secretary, Association of Intellectually Disabled, and Dr Joji T Sebastian Kottathil, PTA President.

Parents were invited to meet the respective teachers of their children and evaluate their academic performance as shown in their progress cards. A book fair was also held on 15th October and 18th November in the school which enabled parents to browse and buy books.

Edu Expo 2016, conducted on 18 October, brought to the fore the art, craft and science skills of the students. The organizers of the Expo were the students of Classes VII-VIII. Simple experiments, still models, working models, vegetable carvings, craft works, paintings, charts, collections of stamps and coins were the highlight of the exhibition. A panel of teachers judged the exhibits.

Experiment & Exhibit Sahodaya Level Youth Fest 2016At the Kottayam Sahodaya youth festival held at Labour India Public School, Marangattupilly, our school won first prize in group dance (girls category II). Nandagopal M P won second prize in classical music (Karnatic, boys), Jewel Binu in Malayalam Extempore (2nd Prize) while Ivy Treesa Siby of Class IX stood first in recitation (Hindi).

SFS Athletic Meet, Food Fest & Handicraft SaleThe annual athletic meet was held on 27-28 October. The sports meet of Primers and Category I was conducted on 27 October. Shri Cyriac Patani, deputy general manager, Malayala Manorama, was the chief guest at the sports meet at the school ground. The chief guest hoisted the flag and declared the meet open. The oath was administered by Rinnu Elizabeth Reju, head girl, followed by a thrilling drill display by students of Classes V and VI. School Manager Fr Jose Parappillil addressed the gathering. What added colour and variety to the meet were the different stalls selling food and fruits under the auspices of the Nallapaadam project, besides the sale of handicrafts by students of Sanjos Vidyalaya, Holy Cross Special School and St John of the Cross Special School. The overall champions trophy was won by Ruby House, with Sapphire House second and Topaz third.

The students celebrated the 60th birthday of Kerala on 01 November by harvesting the paddy crop they had cultivated on a patch of land in the seminary compound. It was titled ‘Koythuthsavam’ and municipal chairman Shri James Thomas Plakkithottiyil inaugurated the harvesting which was done by the students, dressed in traditional farmers’ garb.

SFS School won the third prize in organic farming and was declared the third best school in the state of Kerala. The award ceremony was held on Saturday, 05 November. It was conducted at Sharon Cultural Centre, Thodupuzha. The award was given under the government scheme for vegetable development 2015-16 by the Minister for Agriculture, Shri V S Sunil Kumar.

KG PicnicThe KG kids enjoyed a day’s outing in Uncle John’s Park, Kottayam, on 23 September.

Remembering Mother Teresa

An exhibition on Saint Teresa of Kolkata was held on 07 November at the Pushpagiri Church, Thellakom. Our students of Class VII along with Fr. Principal and a few teachers attended the function and visited the museum on Mother Teresa kept at the church premises.

The inter-school quiz competition Novo Initio-2k16 was held here on Saturday, 12 November. The closing ceremony was presided over by Shri Ganesh R., Chairman, Education Standing Committee, Ettumanoor Municipality. Prizes were distributed to the winning teams. The first prize of Rs 7,001/- and trophy went to Mar Baselios Public School, Devalokam; second prize, Rs 5,001/- went to St Antony’s Public School, Anakkal; third prize of Rs 3,001/- was won by Chavara CMI Public School, Pala.

Novo Initio quiz

Healthcare A de-worming service was provided to SFS students on 10 August when de-worming tablets were provided under the guidance of Shri T P Mohandas, chairman of Health Standing Committee of Ettumanoor Municipality. Again, on 22 November, staff from the health department of the Municipality provided rubella vaccination to our students.

National-level Football Match

On 04 December, under Nallapaadam auspices, a select group of students from classes VII-IX along with a few teachers took the residents of Josegiri Old Age Home at Ettumanoor to Aruvithura and Bharananganam for a day’s outing.

Three of our students Arun B Ghosh, Jinsmon Shaji, and Ambady K participated in the national-level football match played in Punjab from November 12-18. These students were representing the State of Kerala at the National level.

Outing for Senior Citizens

Christmas CelebrationOn Friday afternoon, 16 December, the school celebrated Christmas with traditional pomp and splendor. There was a live crib presented by the students. Santa Claus made his appearance during the program. Students exchanged cards among their chosen friends. The Christmas cake was cut by the school Manager and was shared by all the staff and students.

Sahodaya SrushtiSFS students participated in the Sahodaya exhibition titled Srushti held at St Sebastian’s Public School, Peroor on 06-07 November. Our school got third prize in vegetable carving.

They had coached the students for IIT/JEE competitions in Kottayam on 27 December 2015.The first prize of Rs 2,000/-, trophy and certificate for a business quiz at BMM Public School, Pampady, was won by Madhavaraman M on 14/11/2016. Jithin Jithesh won the first prize and Kumari Divya Krishna Memorial Trophy at the 4th all Kerala Students Open Chess Tournament.

In the second interschool team chess championship organized by YMCA, Kottayam, the fourth position, certificates and gold medal were won by Jithin Jithesh, Charu Hriday and Rohit Krishnan.Minna Anna Johnson got the first prize of Rs.5000/- in the Malayala Manorama Nallapaadam Olympics Album contest.In the zonal karate championship held at Pala on 12/11/2016, Aulsta Shaji stood first in girls karate competition and won a gold medal and a certificate; she won the second prize in girls team karate and won a silver medal and certificate; she also won the third place in girls kumitz and won a certificate.Agnes Mathew won second prize in girls kate, with a silver medal and certificate; second prize in girls kumitz, with a silver medal and certificate, and third place in girls team kate, and a certificate.Steffin Shelly stood third in boys kate and received a certificate. Angela Joy stood third in girls kate and girls team kate and won certificates. Alita Alexander stood third in girls kate, girls team kate and girls kumitz and received certificates.Madhavaraman M and Ashish Siby got the first prize for commerce competition on 15 November 2016 held as part of Euphoria. They got an ever rolling trophy, a cash prize of Rs 2,000/- and certificates.
