Term 3 Week 2B 2 August 2019 DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT PNGAus Connect Partnership - Guests of Government Visit You know someone important is coming when they arrive under Police escort, with security officers in tow and press at hand! Last Friday was a big day for many students and staff at CTHS with the visit of the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, the Hon James Marape, his wife Rachael and a ministerial delegation including a number of PNG cabinet Ministers and Province Governors’. We were very pleased to welcome this important group to the school and acknowledge that CTHS has been selected as one of twelve schools across Australia to be a part of the PNGAus Connect Partnership Initiative. The Federal Government Program was announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison last year as part of a range of South Pacific regional development initiatives. The program aims to forge greater links between secondary schools in Australia with those in PNG by bringing together school leaders, teachers and students from both countries to work together to strengthen the learning outcomes of our PNG neighbours and help our young people reach their full potential and become active and informed global citizens. We are very happy to have been chosen to be a part of this important program and to be paired up with the most significant school in PNG, Sogeri National High School, which has a long and proud tradition of educating significant PNG people including one of the past Prime Ministers of PNG! The Program will run for two years and involve visits by selected teams to each country. Our team of myself, Mrs Lees, Mrs Sacco and two students (TBA) have started planning for the first of these visits by Australian schools to PNG during the October School holidays. This will be followed by a reciprocal visit by our PNG guests to Australia between 17-30 November. We look forward to keeping you informed of milestones that are achieved as part of this program. As for Fridays visit, it was well received by all in attendance. Suffice to say, the PNG delegation, the Secretary of Education in NSW, Mr Mark Scott, and the Deputy Secretary of Education in NSW, Mr Murat Dizdar, all walked away with a very healthy respect and admiration for the work we are doing with students at CTHS. A big thank you goes to the many people who had a hand in the organisation and delivery of a very important event. LeadersInduction Ceremony Todays formal Ceremony saw the induction of our new Leadership Team. It also provided the opportunity for our current Leaders to be farewelled and thanked for their outstanding service. Our outgoing Leaders have been excellent role models in what has been a demanding twelve months. They combined their many and varied school duties with their academic studies, cultural pursuits and sporting commitments in a manner which demonstrated maturity well beyond their years. The Leadership Team led many impressive projects, all demonstrating their commitment and determination to the ethos of the school. Hopefully, our new Leaders will have an equally impressive twelve months in office. AP4 Exams The HSC is fast approaching, with students busily working towards their deadlines to complete their practical projects. Families often feel the stress of these examination periods, so remaining calm, giving encouragement and trying to put things into perspective are important things to remember at this time. Without careful management, stress and anxiety can combine with the normal challenges of teenage years, to bring undesirable consequences. A balance between study, physical exercise, social activity and downtime will be beneficial for most. However, not all students are able to manage the stress by themselves and this is when it is very important to seek help. The Year 12 Trial HSC exams will commence on Monday 5 August. Many students find this exam period particularly stressful and it is important for all students to try to balance their activities and manage their mental and physical health. If a student cannot attend a Trial HSC exam for any reason, they MUST contact the school on the day of the exam and complete the necessary paperwork regarding their absence. If you have any queries, Ms Adamou, Head Teacher Stage 6 or Mr Edinburgh, Head Teacher Administration, are the people to speak to regarding these issues. P&C General Meeting The P&C General Meeting was held on Tuesday 30 July. I would like to thank the Head Teachers of Mathematics, Mrs Lees and Ms Iacona for a wonderful presentation updating parents on the latest changes to the Maths curriculum and how the Mathematics KLA has changed in its approaches of late from an administrative sense and investing in staff with a quality program of professional learning both in and out of school. P&C Meetings are held twice per term on a Tuesday evening and all are welcome! Universities Admission Centre (UAC) presentation to Year 10 families A healthy turn out of approximately 400 Year 10 parents and students attended a UAC talk at school on the evening of Tuesday 30 July. Trudy Noller, from UAC, spoke about the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) in relation to Year 11 2020 subject selections. The presentation was well received with many spirited questions from the audience at the end of proceedings. A big thank you to Ms Adamou for organising the event and giving up her time to be there to answer questions.

A reminder to the families of Year 10 students that subject selections for 2020 need to be submitted online by Sunday 4 August 5pm. Please follow the instructions as detailed in the booklet you were given on the Year 10 into 11 Subject selection evening last term.

HSC Dance Performance Night The CAPA faculty held its HSC Dance Performance Night on Wednesday, highlighting yet another aspect of the tremendous skills and talents of our students. It provides a valuable opportunity for our senior students, who will shortly be sitting their HSC examinations, to prepare and perform their practical compositions. The audience was entertained by a variety of dance styles and video compositions. The diversity and intricacy of performances are a credit to the Year 12 Dance students and their teacher, Ms Holt. Congratulations to all involved for your efforts!

Sydney North Athletics Our students, representing Cherrybrook Technology High School at the Sydney North Athletics Carnival, demonstrated outstanding commitment and talent towards their chosen events this week. Congratulations to all our students who participated!

Our Sydney North Representatives, along with their events, are listed in the Sports Report in this week’s Network.

Mr Clements Young Archie Finalist on the Today Show Congratulations to Amy Hill of Year 11 who was asked to be on the Today Show during the recent school holidays, due to being a finalist in this year’s Young Archie at the Art Gallery NSW. Not only was she interviewed in regards to her entry in the competition, she had to complete two caricatures of the hosts of the Today Show. Wishing Amy the best of luck as they announce the winner of her prize on Thursday 8 August.

Ms Donoghue, HT CAPA

During the term break the Today Show approached my family and asked if I wanted to be interviewed about the Young Archie Competition on the morning of Thursday 18 July. After a period of deliberating whether or not I should go and a little bit of freaking out, we figured this was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. We woke up very early in the morning, travelled into the city and arrived at the National Art Gallery at 7am. Before going on, the crew members asked if another finalist and I could do a quick sketch of the co-hosts of the Today show, so that they could do a ‘big reveal’ later on in the segment. I agreed, and spent my time furiously sketching two co-hosts before going on to be interviewed. The interview was short, but fun. The weather presenter was a very warm, kind person and did her best to make me feel comfortable. She asked me about my relationship with my brother, complemented my work, and asked me about my favourite subjects to draw. After the interview, I relaxed and continued to work on the sketches before going on again to do the ‘big reveal’. The co-hosts loved them, and the artworks were sent back to the studio. It was great meeting some new people, and the overall experience was very fun.

Amy Hill, Year 11 Italy Study Trip The 2019 Italy trip was one to remember, as new friendships and bonds were made with peers. Despite the occasional lost phone or attempted pick pocketing, moaning and whining from walking too long or up steep hills everyone had a laugh along the way and made some beautiful memories. Non-ancient history students were able to learn something new with our fabulous tour guides who navigated us through the tight crowds and hot and sweaty weather. I think everyone can agree the most important things we learnt from the trip was the reason why there are no toilets seats, how to tell the difference between Roma and Napolitano pizza and how to spot a good gelato store. On behalf of the other students the trip was wonderful and planned to great extent where there was never a dull moment. Personally, I would love to return to Italy so I can enjoy the atmosphere, food and the cities all over again.

History Extension Afternoon Tea On Tuesday 30 July the Year 12 History Extension students were proud to host a small afternoon tea for teachers and to present to them a synopsis of their History Extension Major Project. The eleven students in the class have been working since Term 4 last year to research an original topic through an historiographical lens and to present it in an appropriate academic format. The process was challenging for all, but it has given students a real insight into what it is like to research, write and engage with History at a tertiary level. The class would like to thank all who were able to attend, particularly Mr Searle, who drove up from Marrickville High School to see them and to give them some timely advice in preparation for their trial.

Mr Hartman Mock Trial Update On 25 July, Thursday, a team of six students from Cherrybrook Technology High School competed in the First Elimination Round of the 2019 NSW Schools Mock Trial Competition against Loreto Normanhurst. Only the top sixty four teams in the state were invited to participate and our school as one of very few public schools that made the cut. The trial was about a ‘catfishing’ case, and related to the NSW Laws against deception, fraudulent behaviour and recklessness. In this trial, our team represented the Prosecution and formed a convincing argument against Loreto, in order to prove that our client had been manipulated and scammed by the defendant.

Regrettably the trial had to be cut short in unexpected circumstances. Despite CTHS’s outstanding effort throughout the course of the trial, the round was awarded to the opposition by a score of 265-266. We would like to thank Loreto Normanhurst for visiting our school and wish them all the best in the remainder of the competition. The outcome of the trial is under review by the Law Society. In the circumstances it seems unlikely that our team will progress further this year. The students involved in this trial were Sophia Koller, Madison Pryor, Shalena Brito, Arabi Sathiyapal, Shakila Muthukuda (Year 11) and Lara Flaksbard (Year 10). All the students were a credit to the school exhibiting grace and excellent sportsmanship in trying circumstances.

Overall, our team is to be commended for finishing 3rd in the State; the highest ever placing for CTHS in the round robin portion of the competition. We enjoyed success against All Saints Greek Orthodox Grammar School, Oakhill College, Tangara and Redfield College. This would not have been possible without Mr. Fernandez, who organised competition rounds, assisted with preparation for the trials and ultimately, provided our students with such a wonderful learning opportunity. I strongly recommend participating in Mock Trial next year to students currently in Stage 5.

Shakila Muthukuda, Year 11

Arts Alive Drama Festival Our Year 8 and Year 9 Drama Ensemble performers appeared on stage last night, Thursday 1 August at the Arts Alive Drama Festival held at the Concourse, Chatswood.

The Year 9 Drama Ensemble members presented a work entitled, Troubled Trotters which explored the devastating effects of self-interest when the powerful and influential fail in their responsibilities to serve those they represent. The piece tells the story of how greedy council members of the Bulgandoo Shire Council divert local water resources to their own properties, leaving others without any water supply to keep their livestock alive. Hearts break as farmers who are not council members watch their precious animals die agonising deaths from chronic dehydration.

Our Year 8 Drama Ensemble members presented a work entitled, First Days. This was a highly visual piece looking at significant moments in our lives. Masks were used to convey the emotions which can be felt at these times.

Chloe Familton had this to say about her experience:

On Tuesday 30 July, students of the Year 8 and Year 9 Drama Ensembles met before school to participate in a technical rehearsal at the Concourse Theatre in Chatswood, in preparation for the Arts Alive Festival. Students gathered in front of C2.1 at 7:50 am and travelled by bus and train to Chatswood. The group was very excited to have a chance to ride the new metro train from Cherrybrook to Chatswood.

We thoroughly enjoyed the whole theatre experience - from being provided with our own private dressing rooms to experiencing the thrill of waiting quietly in the stage wings for our performance to start.

We also loved having the opportunity to practice our piece in costume, on the big stage with proper music and lighting effects. A huge thank you to Ms Cannon and Mrs Cunningham for their support and for giving us the opportunity to rehearse in the Concourse Theatre.

Congratulations to all of the performers who took part in this wonderful event, and to all the families for their dedicated efforts with transport to and from the venue. Additionally, your presence in the audience was very much appreciated.

Ms Cannon

Murder in the library Mr Johnson... murdered?! Following the storyline of Macbeth, CTHS students strapped on their 'detective' caps to solve the Murder in the Library, whilst the culprit remained at large. Sifting through several pieces of evidence, from fingerprints to CCTV footage, witness accounts to hair samples, students compiled information to prove who killed the Principal and why? Did the student detectives of CTHS find the murderer or did they put the wrong person behind bars?

Joshua Ng, one of the participating Year 10 Science students In this year of celebrating the moon landing, the above images may look like a homage to the moon. They are the hair samples of suspects in Murder in the Library, a unit run during Term 2. It is a cross-disciplinary unit which Science, English and Legal Studies can use. The Science students are challenged to follow the forensic trail. Legal Studies may focus on procedures, statements, anomalies. English, besides examining the forensics and statements, is encouraged to look at the literary elements relating to Macbeth, lust, power, jealousy and other powerful motivating passions. There is something for everyone!
