Message from ISCP Team

Hello, Friends!

We hope you are just excited to be a part of IIT Bombay as we are. Hearty congratulations on this

incredible feat! Institute Students Companion Program (ISCP) welcomes you to one of the most

resourceful campuses in India. The next two or three years are going to be the most memorable,

impactful, insightful and life changing years which will fly past. We hope you imbibe as much as

you can and more from your peers, seniors, faculty and staff. Here’s to your first glimpse of ISCP,

the backbone of your journey through the mecca of learning.

ISCP is a program within IIT Bombay Post Graduate (PG) student community. Its primary objective is

to develop an atmosphere of cordial interaction amongst the PG entrants and the PG seniors. It will

encourage the flow of information, knowledge, and sharing of experiences among the students.

Life in IIT Bombay can appear a little daunting at times, balancing between the academic workload

and the plethora of extra-curricular activities. And that is where ISCP can help you blend in and

make the most of it. ISCP strives to provide a senior student companion as a mentor to all newly

admitted students. New entrants can contact their assigned companion to discuss their academic and

non-academic issues or concerns. Student Companions enable the smooth and gentle transition from

the graduation days to post-graduation days. New entrants also feel assured that there is somebody

on campus to help them and listen to their concerns. Many a times they find a caring friend in

companions.

What to expect from a Student Companion:

● Initial information about the campus, courses, academics and extracurricular activities. ● Support in case of any problem or difficulty. ● Organization of various academic and non-academic activities for student’s development. ● Continuous interaction and feedback from students on their needs and requirements.

In short, this is a program by the students of IIT Bombay, for the new students to ensure their

overall development through utilization of all the available resources at IIT Bombay.

Let the learning begin. Feel free to contact us anytime!

Engineering and upcoming areas too. The academic activities are supported by 30 laboratories. Three new

laboratories, Computational Fluid and Soft Matter lab, SATANIC lab and Micro-forming lab, were

inaugurated recently. The Department has decided recently to focus major research efforts in the following

five areas: Computational Mechanics; Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics; CIM; Refrigeration, A/C and

Cryogenics; and MEMS, NEMS and Mechatronics.

The Department is known for research and projects in robotics, fluid dynamics, heat pumps, cryogenics,

nuclear engineering, fracture mechanics, I. C. Engines, Combustion, CFD, CAD-CAM and other areas.

Experimental and computational facilities are being continuously upgraded. Industry interaction has been

Mech. Glories

Radiance: The Annual Research and Technology Festival of the

Department of Mechanical Engineering of IITB, or Radiance was first

initiated in the year 2007. Over the years, it has built its own legacy and

reputation of being platform for fostering brotherhood amongst the

Mechanical Engineering fraternity across the nation. It is a stage for

discussion of the challenges plaguing Mechanical Engineering, of the wide world of opportunities that lies before us, and of the innovative and creative ideas that just

strike people, in the "Radiance" and guests from over 100 colleges and corporate companies,

Radiance is just getting bigger and bigger. Thrilling competitions, innovative and fresh paper

presentations, exciting hands-on workshops and exhibitions that are a treat to the eyes and many

informal events to relax your mind after the technical overdose.

IITB Racing: A group of students from IIT Bombay who are united

by their passion for engineering, and they desire to fulfil a common

goal of putting India on the world map of race all terrain car

manufacturers. It started journey in June 2007. They participated in

Formula SAE 2008, held in Michigan, USA, in May 2008. IIT

Bombay was proud to be the only Indian team participating in the

event. Since its inception in 2008, IITB Racing has targeted excellence at the premier SAE Collegiate Design Competitions: Formula SAE (formula race car

competition), and the Baja SAE (all-terrain vehicle competition). IITB Racing’s formula car ‘Vayu’

won the SAE Perseverance award for the Best Rookie Team at the FSAE Michigan 2008 event, held

at Michigan International Speedway in May 2008.

The second vehicle ’Prithvi’ ,an all-terrain vehicle, won 5 awards (including Best Engineering

Design and Maximum Acceleration) at the Baja SAE India 2009 event, held at NATRIP, Pithampur

in January 2009. The 3rd vehicle ‘Agni’, a formula car, was the 2nd best Asian entry at the FSUK

competition, held at the famous Silverstone Formula One Circuit, UK, in July 2009. In Baja SAE

2011, Prithvi 2.0 won the Raftar Award of 1 Lakhs INR for being the Lightest and the Fastest

Vehicle in the competition.

The Institute Student Companion Programme

The Student Companion Programme is specifically designed to cater to the needs of PG

community of IIT Bombay. The post graduate students in the institute face various issues

which are typically non-academic and coalition of academic in nature. These issues need to

be addressed; the ISCP provides a platform for the students to get help at formal as well as

informal lines. The current scenario, thus, calls for a Post Graduate student-oriented guidance

program which addresses their peculiar needs and helps them in becoming sound scientists,

engineers and citizens. The ISCP is in effect from the academic year 2011-2012, and is

monitored by the Dean AP office. Students are requested to make best use of the resources

made available to them by the ISCP. The present team from mechanical consists of 11

Student Companion (SC) and a Department Coordinator (DC).
