ACADEMIC COURSES:
Preamble:
The Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India do not specify the details of
medical ethics in the curriculum, both for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate
courses. None of the Health Science Institutions were offering any formal academic
program at the time when Yenepoya University launched the first Post Graduate
Diploma in Bioethics and Medical Ethics (January 2011) and Certificate Course in
Clinical Ethics Consultation (November 2011).
The essence of the philosophy behind establishing the Centre and running academic
courses is to create a reawakening about the importance and central position of
bioethics in the professional work of healthcare providers. The Centre believes that
ethics education and training requires discussions, deliberations and face-to-face
interactions for the proper understanding of ethics. At the same time we understand
that it is not a main stream subject approved by regulatory authorities and therefore only
pursued by existing busy professionals with personal interest in self development and
lifelong learning. Thus our courses are hybridized to include contact programs and
online learning.
1. Postgraduate Diploma in Bioethics & Medical Ethics: Postgraduate Diploma
in Bioethics & Medical Ethics (PGDBEME) is a one-year contact program based
academic course that is reinforced by field visits and mock reviews. This
program begins every January and covers all the areas of bioethics such as
morality, theories of ethics, duty-based ethics, research ethics and clinical ethics.
2. Certificate Course in Clinical Ethics Consultation (CCCEC): Since 20011
November, the Centre was running a Certificate Course in Clinical Ethics
Consultation (CCCEC) in collaboration with the Department of History,
Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz,
Germany. Dr. Norbert W Paul, Professor and Head of the Department is the
visiting Professor at the Centre for Ethics and engages students in the CCCEC
course. Additionally Dr. Anand Zachariah, Sr. Professor of Medicine, Christian
Medical College, Vellore, was also a resource faculty. The first batch of CCCEC
enrolled 5 students and also had the unique distinction of being the first course
offered in India. This was a six-month academic program enabling the
participants to be familiar with the ethical issues in health care practices. Since
2013 the Certificate Course has been converted to a Post Graduate Diploma
course and runs for one year on the same design as the Post Graduate Diploma
in Bioethics & Medical Ethics. Clinical ethics is covered in depth and the
participant will be trained to successfully run a clinical ethics consultation in
his/her institution.
3. Intensive Short Training course in Ethical issues in Bio medical research:
Since 2012, every May, the Centre for Ethics, runs an innovative course
“Intensive Short Training Course on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Research”.
This five-day hands-on workshop trains and empowers participants who are
presently engaged in research or are serving on institutional ethics committees;
or are likely to do so in the coming years - empower them to recognize and deal
with various ethical issues arising out of research in India. The workshop is
structured using the current guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical
Research, the Schedule Y of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, the ICH-GCP and
other relevant national and international bodies. In 2012, 18 participants
attended the program and in 2013, 30 participants attended.

9. Continuing Medical Education Programs organized:
a. CME on Research Integrity and Publication Ethics
A CME on Research Integrity and Publication Ethics was conducted by the Centre for
Ethics, Yenepoya University on Tuesday the 28th May 2013 from 12.00 to 3.00p.m. at
Lecture Hall IV, Academic Block with the main objective of increasing awareness
among health care practitioners who are likely to submit manuscripts for publication to
journals. Research is becoming an important component of every medical college
teacher’s responsibilities. Doing research will reach a meaningful and logical
conclusion only if the findings are published. Publishing an article is not an easy
process, and requires time, care and some training. Due to overflow of information on
the internet and technological advances, plagiarism is being increasingly discovered,
leading to authors’ discredit. Increasingly journal editors are requesting manuscript
submitters about the ethical standards maintained during the data collection. Therefore
the Centre for Ethics organized this unique CME on Ethical Issues in publishing. The
following were the resource persons.
1. Dr.Amar Jesani, Honorary Trustee of Anusandhan Trust, Mumbai and also an
Independent Consultant, Resource person and Trainer in Bioethics, Gender and
Health.
2. Dr.Richard Cash, Senior Lecturer on Global Health, Department of Global Health
and Population, Harvard School of Publication, Harvard University, USA.
102 participants registered for the CME. The participants were the faculty, Post
Graduates and Interns of Yenepoya University and staff and students from neighboring
colleges too. The presentations were followed by interaction with the participants.
b. First International CME on Public Health Ethics at Yenepoya University
The Centre for Ethics, Department of
Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, in
collaboration with the departments of
Internal Medicine and Community
Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College,
organized yet another innovative academic leadership initiative - a half-day Continuing
Medical Education (CME) program “Public Health Ethics in India-Issues and
Challenges” on 12th September 2013, Professor (Dr.) Angus Dawson, Professor of
Public Health Ethics, who also heads the Medicine, Ethics, Society and History
Department at the Birmingham University, U.K. was the chief resource person. Along
with him, Prof Dr. Amar Jesani, Founder Editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics
and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Ethics, and Prof. Abhay Nirgude of the
department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College were the other
resource persons.
The objective of this half day CME was to increase awareness among health care
professionals about their role in Public Health policy and decision making and ethical
issues that could arise from this. Dr.Abhay Nirgude, introduced the audience to the
basic concepts of Public Health and principles of Bioethics. This was followed by a
session by Dr. Angus Dawson on ethical issues and challenges that India is facing in
the area of public health research and surveillance. Dr. Amar Jesani spoke briefly on
