A two-year position is available for a postdoctoral associate in vascular fluid mechanics to participate in a multi-institutional team working to develop and test diagnostic nanoparticles for cancer and cardiovascular systems. Funding is provided by the University of Calgary’s “Eyes High” program (http://www.ucalgary.ca/risingstars). Applicants should have a PhD in engineering, biophysics or similar with relevant experience in fluid mechanics, with emphasis on microfluidics. Experience in flow devices, fluorescence imaging methods, computational fluid dynamics and vascular applications is advantageous. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research success, excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to work well both independently and as part of a diverse team. Review of applications will begin March 1, 2013. Interested individuals should send a cover letter, detailed CV, a general research/goals statement, sample publications or manuscripts, transcripts, and the contact information (including email addresses) for three references to:

Dr. David Cramb or Dr. Kristina Rinker [email protected] [email protected] The Cramb Research Group (http://people.ucalgary.ca/~dcramb/) is a multidisciplinary group of chemists, biochemists and physicists interested in the application of nanotechnology to medicine. They specialize in monitoring the fate of nanoparticles in angiogenic tissues. The Rinker Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Research Laboratory (www.ucalgary.ca/rinker) is an interdisciplinary group focused upon investigating fluid flow dependent cell physiology, including mechanisms of vascular disease development and influences on stem cell fate, and developing molecular and nanoparticle based diagnostics and platform diagnostic testing systems with applications to cancer and cardiovascular disease. The University of Calgary is one of the top seven research universities in Canada. Calgary has a population over a million and close proximity to Kananaskis Country, Banff, and the beautiful Rocky Mountains. ).(/01.)%$'0((0,$2%"$")#3'!"#$%#&'( Post-doctoral position in lipidomics, metabolomics and applied biostatistical methods We are recruiting a post-doctoral fellow with the desire to be at the forefront of systems biology to support our program in “Lipidomics of Tumour Progression,” funded by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions. The focus of this work will be on the development of analytical methods with combined with statistical and/or bioinformatics tools for analysis of metabolomics and lipidomics data. The initial term is for one year with possible extension for a second year. Metabolomics is an emerging research platform in biomedical, toxicology and plant science applications but is lagging in appropriate methods development. We have a particular interest in clinical the application of translational metabolomics. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to implement and develop new approaches for metabolomics and lipidomics sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis by NMR and LC-MS from biological materials (cell lines, tissues, biofluids). The lab is equipped with a 700 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer with fully automated sample preparation and handling capabilities, as well as state-of-the-art UPLC x UPLC coupled to q-ToF and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will have an interest in learning multivariate methods applied to biological ‘omics’ data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or lipidomics). Proficiency with the R programing environment is a strong asset. A strong mentorship plan is in place for all aspects of this work to ensure long term success. The candidate will be expected to: 1) develop a comprehensive knowledge of the state-of-the-art analytical methods as applied to ‘omics’ data; 2) incorporate specific considerations of metabolomics/lipidomics analytical platforms in novel research methods development; 3) potentially develop software to implement methods in conjunction with expert mentors; 4) compare existing and novel methods on specific data sets, and 5) be responsible for the preparation of manuscripts and presentations. This position will be formally based out of the University of Calgary under the co-supervision of Drs. Aalim Weljie and Karen Kopciuk. Significant travel will be required to partnering institutions in the United States (primarily the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, but also potentially including Harvard University, Boston, MA, and the Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle, WA.). This will require the candidate to be mobile for several weeks or months at a time to enable them to work with methodologists with differing areas of expertise. Please forward a cover letter, complete CV and contact information for three referees formatted as a single PDF file to Dr. Aalim Weljie ([email protected] or [email protected]) or Dr. Karen Kopciuk ([email protected]). The position is available immediately and applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. The University of Calgary is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful Calgary Alberta, and has been ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the 5th most livable city world-wide in 2012. We have the youngest and most educated population in Canada, giving rise to energetic world-class academic and extra-curricular opportunities. The University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League research institution and one of the oldest in the United States, consistently ranking amongst the top institutions in national and international surveys. The Perelman School of Medicine was the first medical school in the USA, and is ranked #2 on the list of Best Medical Schools: Research by the US News and World Report. Philadelphia has a vibrant artistic and intellectual community, ranked #4 on the Lonely Planet “Top 10 US Destinations for 2013”.
