21. SWOC Analysis
Strengths
Well qualified teaching faculty with rich academic experience.
Department library with good number of reference books
ICT based class room teaching
CBCS pattern of syllabi with skill oriented and advanced electives
Certificate courses which impart employable skills
Weaknesses
Lack of advanced laboratory facility
Lack of skilled assistance
Insufficient ICT facility
Lack of sufficient power back up system for laboratories
Opportunities
A central Instrumentation facility will complement the present lab facility for hi end
experiments and research work.
Hi speed Wi-Fi and computer centre will further enhance the learning abilities of
students.
Strict control on students attendance would further enhance the learning abilities of
the students
Department of Biotechnology, GCW, Guntur YEAR BOOK 2018-19

IQAC
Planning for more on –Job training programmes for students will enhance the
employability opportunities.
Installation of solar energy harnessing system would greatly help the continuous
running of lab experiments.
Obtaining research grants from funding agencies like UGC, DBT are in pipe line
Challenges
Getting full admissions into this restructured course is becoming difficult due to
relatively high tuition fee than conventional courses.
Since the medium of instruction is only English, students with telugu medium back
ground are not able to follow quickly.
It is challenging to motivate the students to take up higher education in
Biotechnology due to high tuition fees
There is a great challenge to periodically upgrade lab infrastructure to meet the
growing inter disciplinary teaching –learning process
Future Plans
Changing the Fee structure close to conventional courses for improving the demand
and admissions into this course
Requesting funds from UGC for infrastructure development of the department.
Applying for funded research projects to further enhance the research atmosphere
in the department.
22. Best Practices:
5 MCQs –A Day
Objectives
To enable the students to pay full attention in the class
To make the habit of noting down important points in the class.
To prepare them continuously for P.G entrance exams
To improve their cognitive skills
Need Identified
With the revolution of computers and internet, students are loosing the habit of
taking notes in the class
Usual pattern of Semester exams do not have MCQs, but all competitive exams are in
MCQs form
Department of Biotechnology, GCW, Guntur YEAR BOOK 2018-19
34
IQAC
Students need not have to prepare separately for P.G exams
Many students cannot afford to purchase practice books
Students need to be encouraged to take up carrier in applied life sciences
The Practice
Teacher gives 5 MCQs/fill in the blank questions at the end of the class
Models question papers of various universities are also used.
Students can refer to their notes to answer the questions
The brief discussion that happen during question hour will give the feeling of
summarizing the topic as well as repetition for slow learners
Evidence of success
Students feel confident to write various P.G entrance exams
Slow learners also tend to improve their learning abilities
Students have material for quick revision for their P.G entrance exams
Resources required
Good teaching material
Model question papers of various universities
This Week In Biotechnology
Objectives
To enable the students with latest update on happenings in biotechnology
To inspire the students to contribute to the happenings in biotechnology
To impart the knowledge of the improved methods of molecular biology techniques
To improve through learning of concepts
Need Identified
Techniques are being improved everyday
Automation is being applied in each technique for speedy and massive analysis
In depth knowledge of advances in techniques will enable them to use it
Future world needs lot many number biotechnologists with latest updates
The Practice
The in charge of the department has subscription for the leading journal-Science
E-mail alerts of “This week in science” are checked regularly for biotechnology
related articles.
Department of Biotechnology, GCW, Guntur YEAR BOOK 2018-19

IQAC
Break time (incubation, Autoclaving) during practical hours are used to discuss the
latest updates in life sciences and Biotechnology.
Students will be asked to relate and apply the topics to their syllabus
Evidence of success
Students get enriched with latest updates in their subject
Students express their interest to take up carrier in Applied life sciences.
Students wants to attend work shops and training programmes to get hands on
expertise in advanced techniques
Resources required:
Subscription to high impact Journals
