Denver Botanic Gardens’ Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration program is designed to offer a comprehensive series
classes in botanical illustration, providing participants the drawing and painting skills required to render accurate and use
depictions of the plant world with a focus on detail. In addition to our traditional on-site Botanical Illustration curriculum w
offer an in-class/off-site program which combines classroom participation with remote on-line learning opportunities. The stude
accepted into this distance learning program must reside more that 150 miles away from Denver Botanic Gardens.
SUMMER/FALL 2011 DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMCERTIFICATE IN BOTANICAL ART & ILLUSTRATION
ON-SITEThe ollowing 15-hour required courses are held on site over
three days (Friday through Sunday). Work or these classes is
completed entirely in the classroom.

ONLINE WITH ON-SITE COMPONENTThe ollowing 15-hour required courses are oered through
a combination o on-site intensive classroom experience and
online instruction:

• Botanical Illustration in Colored Pencil II
• Color Mixing for Artists
• Botanical Illustration in Pen and Ink I
• Botanical Illustration in Pen and Ink II

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONThe classroom instruction portion o courses oered with an
online component cover material in 10 hours spread over two
consecutive days. During this classroom session the student
will learn new technique(s) and receive one-on-one tutoring.
THE OFF-SITE LEARNING APPROACH:Following the two-day concentrated classroom instruction, three
weekly Internet sessions cover the remaining elements of the
course. The successul completion o a nal artwork (plate) within
one month (30 days) ater the conclusion o the on-site session is
the culmination o each o the distance learning courses.
The student must use a scanner or digital camera to record
weekly achievement and email the high resolution image to the
instructor and program manager. All student questions as w
as the instructor answers, recommendations and suggestio
are all handled by email. The student must send a scan o t
inal plate to the instructor and the program manager in ord
to receive a credit rom the course.
ELECTIVE COURSESIn order to become eligible to apply for the portfolio revie
students must complete a minimum o 100 elective hours
addition to the 13 required 15-hour courses. Elective courses a
designed to increase the student’s knowledge, ability a
experience in botanical art. Typically an elective course me
weekly or three hours over a ve week time period (15 hr), b
shorter condensed courses are also organized. A selection
electives ollowing the in-class/o-site model will be oered.

Pastels aren’t those pale colors associated with blackboard chalk;
they are the hands-on medium that connects you directly to your art.
In fact, pastels have a long history among artists who appreciate
versatility and ease of application. Begin with quick studies that
create a roadmap to a nished piece; do exercises in color
selection to increase your personal color vocabulary and learn how
to make no-fear choices to a nished painting. Individual attention
and instructor demonstrations will boost your condence and your

Susan T. Fisher is the director of the Art Institute at the Arizon
Sonora Desert Museum where she created the Nature Ill
tration Certificate Program. She is the former coordinator
the Botanical Art and Illustration Program at Denver Botan
Gardens. Susan served on the board o directors and is t
past president of the American Society of Botanical Artis
Her illustrations appear in numerous periodicals and boo
national exhibits and private collections.
Flower Portraits in Pastel with Susan Fisher
Known as “king o fowers” and “fower o
wealth and honor,” the peony is the most
popular botanical motif in China. As a symbol
o purity, the lotus is said to be the “gentleman
among owers.” Writing Chinese characters
and painting not only gives insight into
Chinese culture, but can also be a relaxing
and meditative practice or people o all
ages. This class will explore the abiding
rhythms of nature and human culture in China through the
unique characteristics and techniques associated with traditional
Chinese ink painting of peony and lotus. You will learn a number of
Chinese characters that make up auspicious sayings to go with the
peony and lotus as well. Fee: $210 member, $257 non-memb

arts, collector, practicing calligrapher, and also the cultu

Learn to draw! Begin with a brief history and an overview of
the specific elements of botanical illustration. Learn the skills of
careul observation and realistic drawing in graphite pencil,
