Statistically, the first molars are themost common teeth that are lost due todecay or periodontal disease, and the re-placement of the first molars with im-plants is the most common site of theimplant surgery in the patient’s mouth.Although the placement of the implantsin healed molar sites is a common prac-tice in implant dentistry, the immediateplacement of the implant in a fresh ex-traction site offers substantial benefits tothe patients, surgical and restorative

Earl O. Bergersen DDS,MSD will be presentingon the most efficient andcost effective techniquesto straighten teeth with-out braces.

Q: What makes Ortho-Tain Appliances so unique?

A: The Ortho-T technique is the superior, most effective choice of adult orthodontictreatment without braces. Ortho-T’sunique design allows permanent dentitionto be guided into a perfect class I occlu-sion with only one appliance worn 1-2hours per day. The Ortho-T techniquetakes 1/5 the time of fixed treatment.

Q: What benefits does the Ortho-T tech-nique for adult treatment without braceshave over other adult treatment tech-niques?• As previously stated, Ortho-T is worn1-2 hours per day; treatment time is 2-12months which is approximately ⅓ thetime of most other procedures.• Ortho-T’s cost is ¼ to ½ that of fixedtreatment.• Ortho-T corrects overbite, overjet, crowding, spacing and TMJ.

• Ortho-T requires only one appliancewhich is worn for both active treatmentas well as retention. If relapse occurs10 years later, the same appliance canbe used.• No interruptions or changing of ap-pliance if dental work is done. Anytype of treatment - bridgework, extrac-tions, implants; do not affect the fit ofthe appliance.

Q: How difficult is it for a dentist tounderstand and implement the Ortho-T technique?

A: Attending a one-day course or view-ing our seminar on DVD will provide thenecessary knowledge. Ortho-T is the eas-iest appliance to use on the market.

Q: How many patients have beentreated with the Ortho-T?

A: Over 3 million.

Q: Ortho-Tain also has an orthodontictreatment procedure for teenagers andyoung children? • Occlus-o-Guide can be used for almost

practitioners. Some benefits to the pa-tients are obvious – a separate surgicalprocedure does not have to be done sincethe implant is placed at the same timewith tooth extraction and the timeframefrom the tooth extraction to the finalrestoration, which is typically 10months, is greatly shortened, to fourmonths. Other benefits are not as obvi-ous and need to be pointed out to the pa-tient. For example, the horizontal boneloss or the sinus expansion with verticalbone loss during the socket healing mayalter the ideal implant placement in buc-cal-lingual direction or necessitate acostly sinus elevation/ grafting proce-dure. Implants placed in healed sites areoften placed lingually/palatally from theideal position due to buccal bone resorp-tion and final restorations exhibit unnat-ural emergence profiles that are notesthetically pleasing.

Conventional wide diameter im-plants have 5.0–6.0 millimeter diameter

that makes the immediate implant place-ment into the extraction socket less pre-dictable due to a large gap between theimplant and the surrounding bone thatneeds to be filled with grafting material.Due to a large diameter, up to 8 millime-ter, Really Wide Implants minimize theimplant/bone gap which leads to a fasterimplant integration.

Integration of Really Wide Implantsinto the KAT Implants System, accordingto Vitali Bondar, DDS who is the Presi-dent and Founder of KAT Implants, wasrelatively easy since the implants sharethe same platform with all other KAT im-plants. Dentists can use the same instru-mentation and abutments on 3.0millimeter small diameter implants aswell as on 8.0 millimeter Really WideImplants! In fact, KAT Implants suppliesonly one Surgical and Restorative Kit toplace and restore all KAT implants.

Time and time again we hearfrom practitioners that tell usthat they would love the ulti-mate high tech practice but thatthey just can’t afford to make ithappen.

Quite simply—that isn’t so.When we meet a practi-

tioner that perceives this difficulty, wegenerally uncover one or more of the fol-lowing problems:

1. The practitioner believes that hisor her productive capacity, and thereforeincome, is quite a bit lower than what iseasily achieved through relatively simpleworkplace modifications.

2. The practitioner believes that his or herrequired treatment room layout, and

therefore equipment costs, is farin excess of that actually needed.

3. The doctor has been unable todesign enough treatment capac-ity into the office space available, because of a misperception abouttreatment room size require-ments.

Operatory productivity is a function ofoperatory organization, practitioner skilllevel and office design. Our studies indi-cate most motivated practitioners possessan adequate understanding of the proce-dure techniques necessary to providegreat customer satisfaction. Therefore, ithas been our experience that the remain-ing elements (design & organization) arethe keys to unlocking heightened office

At NSK it’s all in-house: researching, developing, manufacturing, testing

NSK uses more than 17,000 precisionparts to build high-speed rotary cutting in-struments and accessories, including hand-pieces and tips that dental professionalsuse in restorations, prosthetics, endodon-tics, oral hygiene, lab work and surgery.

Considering the market’s demandfor ever-more precise, strong and com-pact instruments, that’s not so surprising.

The surprising part is this: Of those17,000-plus parts, NSK manufacturesmore than 85 percent in-house. The com-pany even designs and builds the equip-ment it uses to manufacture and test those

parts — so it can ensure micron-order ac-curacy. It’s all part of an obsessive focuson quality control that dates to the com-pany’s founding in Japan in 1930.

Today, NSK products have proventheir worth in more than 130 countries —including the United States. and Canada, which are served by NSK America, nowcalled NSK Dental LLC.

The philosophy of building the ma-chines to build the parts to build the prod-uct has followed the company into everymarket it enters. Additionally, the organi-zation’s management structure puts controlat regional levels to ensure prompt productdelivery and responsive after-sales servic-ing. Just as important, it’s within the vari-

ous regions that the company constantlysolicits feedback from users of its products. The goal is to be able to swiftly respond tolocal needs.

It’s all about the handControl of all aspects of the develop-ment process helps NSK ensure timelyregulatory compliance, improve reliabil-ity and shorten development time. Buteven more critical to NSK is the directchannel its processes create betweenproduct users and developers. With itsdental instruments in particular, much ofthe focus goes directly to the hand of theend user. “Handpieces and the HumanHand — Powerful Partners” is the com-pany’s core branding message. The goalis an ergonomic design that becomes anextension of the dental professional’shand, transmitting intentions of delicatehand movements promptly and precisely

to the target.

A tradition of innovationRecent NSK advancements include an ul-trasonic scaler and tooth polisher; bone-cut-ting instruments that employ ultrasonictechnologies; a mass- produced all-titaniumhandpiece body; air turbines with a unifiedinner race and rotor shaft to achieve vibra-tion-free and silent operation; and the S-Max pico, an ultra-miniature-neck/headhandpiece (the world’s smallest) for betteraccess and patient comfort.

It adds up to a strong reputation forreliability, responsiveness and high-valuecontributions to advancements in patientcare across all dental sectors, includingimplant treatment, laboratory techniques, general dentistry and endodontics.

to have been in this Industry and to havethe knowledge to move forward withSunn Pharmaceuticals. The SK-800 hasbeen in my mind for a long time and I’mvery excited to finally have it all come tofruition. My next kit will be called the“Milo kit.”

This is in honor of an Autistic boy who Ilove and care for very much, a portion ofthe proceeds goes to the Milo Gray Guildfor Seattle Children’s. This guild is so nochild is ever turned away for medicalneeds regardless of the family’s ability topay. I will let you know when we launchthis. It is a very exciting time at Sunn and

I enjoy every day!

Q: Please tell us about your company.

A: I’m very excited to tell you aboutSunn Pharmaceuticals. We will be pro-viding Dentists with the latest emergencydrugs in a dental emergency kit called theSK-800. Sunn Pharmaceuticals offersthis kit with a complimentary ‘renewalmanagement’ service.

We manage the renewal of all expireddrugs and manage the SK-800 emer-gency kit as if it were a separate business. We ensure that the expired drugs are up-dated and the dentist is ensured the pedi-gree is followed and we manage allre-calls , and we at Sunn Pharmaceuti-

cals have an outstanding partnership withthe manufactures so the dentist never hasto think about being current or compliant,we do it all with the latest cutting edgetechnology and drugs.

Q: Do you have any plans for theshow?

A: We do, I’m thankful you asked. Weask that anyone that would like to enterto win the first SK-800 emergency kit, tostop by and see us at our Booth #1904 fordetails.

Q: What do you think sets you apartfrom your competitors?

A: Sunn Pharmaceuticals is cutting edge,

SUNN PHARMACEUTICALS(continued from page 1)

we have worked extensively with highlyrespected dentists in the industry andworked hard to give them exactly whatthey asked for. The SK-800 is exactlywhat they asked for and more. The drugsare the latest in the industry, the colors inthe kit are vibrant and easy to see in anyemergency, there is no guessing, this kitwill be seen in the dental office and rec-ognized as an emergency kit, the designis modern and sleek.

Q: How can our readers find out moreabout Sunn Pharmaceuticals?

the DENTIST knows it’s a great invest-ment; does the patient have the sameopinion? Making that idea shine brightlyin the patient’s mind–that dentistry reallyIS hugely important–it isn’t chance orluck, it’s something you can elicit fromevery patient who walks though yourdoor–yes, EVERY patient–if the dentistand team know exactly what to say.

The other block is the lack of team sys-tems in the office. The difference be-tween an office system that works like abeat-up Ford Pinto and one that workslike a smooth Mercedes is about 30 min-utes of attention each week. This alwayssurprises our clients but the transforma-tion is remarkable. Having a team thatworks like a smooth machine is a boostto morale AND marketing at the same

time. That’s when it becomes more funfor everyone to come to work, includingthe dentist!

Q: Those sound familiar, how do yousolve those challenges?

FM: I’m glad you asked. We show den-tists how to make their practice ANDtheir marketing into a predictable system. It’s not about solving a riddle; it’s aboutapplying methods we’ve tested over 20years. Just as there are proven remediesfor gum disease, there are proven reme-dies for overwhelm, low morale and lowcollections.

Q: Could dentists and their teamsmake the changes themselves?

FM: That MAY be possible but for mostdentists and their teams, it’s about as re-alistic as patients doing their own dental

work. X-rays and a comprehensive examis the first step. When it comes to prac-tice management, just as with dentistry,it’s VERY difficult to do it yourself in apainless, effective way.

Q: What would you say makes yourbusiness unique?

FM: We show dentists how they CANdrive more to the bottom line, reducetheir hours AND take extended vacations.Even if when they think it’s impossible.

Q: What are you offering at the show?

FM: I am really excited to be offeringour comprehensive Practice Analysis &Opportunity Assessment for only $395($2500 value). Based on a provenmethodology to comprehensively assessthe practice on 20 performance metricsincluding marketing, overhead, fee

Just released this month, “Under-standing, Assessing & Treating Den-tomandibular Sensorimotor Dysfunction”emphasizes how dysfunction in the den-tomandibular area can be the underlyingcause of many chronic headaches, mi-graines and other painful symptoms. This well-referenced, educational text in-cludes illustrations, easy-to-follow tables, and self-assessment quizzes.

dental foundation before undertakingrestorative dentistry.

The TruDenta System is a completesystem for assessing, treating and man-aging dynamic force imbalances in themouth (see photo above). It incorporatespatented assessment and treatment tech-nology and software, supplemented byclinical training and ongoing practice im-plementation assistance.

TruDenta examination and assess-ment devices objectively measure and vi-sually illustrate causes of patientsymptoms from dentomandibular senso-rimotor dysfunction. The system evalu-ates the amount and balance of forcesduring closure, at closure and whilechewing using digital force measurement(T-Scan) technology. The cervical rangeof motion is measured with the comput-erized TruDentaROM (Range of Motion)tool. A cervical ROM disability correlates

with a mandibular ROM disability and/oran imbalanced dental foundation.

The TruDenta treatment devicesrepresent a proven combination of sportsmedicine rehabilitation and advanceddentistry technologies. They are clearedby the FDA, and the combination isunique and proven to achieve long-last-ing relief.

The examination process includes ahead health, medical, and headache his-tory, and a pharmacological assessment. The physical examination is supple-mented by objective findings, includingmandibular ROM disability, digital cer-vical ROM disability, and digital forceanalysis (TruDentaScan). The ROM por-tion of the assessment provides objectivedata to AMA guidelines. Other compo-nents of the assessment process includethorough dental, periodontal, airway, or-thodontic and occlusal examinations.

Patients undergo therapies using aproprietary combination of low level lasertherapy, therapeutic ultrasound, transcu-taneous electrical stimulation, and intrao-ral orthotics. These modalities wereoriginally developed by MDs to speed thehealing of joints and force related trau-mas. Although the TMJ is the most com-plex joint in the body, it responds totherapies the way ankles, knees, shoul-ders, and other joints do.

TruDenta combines these with ad-vanced dentistry, as appropriate, toachieve predictable and long lasting out-comes. Dentists can therefore use the Tru-Denta system to confidently assess andtreat muscle and force dysfunction, andprovide patients with opportunities to ad-dress their symptoms for long-term healthand dental stability.

nology in Italy.

Q: That sounds very exciting! Howcan you prove that Piezosurgery is re-ally safe to use around delicateanatomy such as nerves, membranesor arteries?

A: Great question!

First, Piezosurgery uses a multi-wave fre-quency that cuts bone, cleans it away, anddigs a little deeper by moving the cuttingtips the thickness of a human hair atabout 30,000 times per second. The softtissue basically jiggles with the tip andthe bone doesn’t. Therefore Piezosurgeryeasily cuts through bone without harmingthe softer, more delicate adjacentanatomy.

Second, the electronic monitoring systemswithin the internal computers of Piezo-surgery devices will not allow a loose orsignificantly damaged Piezosurgery surgi-cal tip to harm a patient. The operator isalerted immediately and must take correc-tive action to alleviate the situation.

Conversely, I was able to launch a loosecutting tip from a popular catalog com-pany’s unit about 8 feet in the air severaltimes just by pressing the foot pedal! Canyou imagine what would happen if thatcutting tip had been inside someone’ssinus near their brain? Yikes!

Fortunately, as I stated before, the inter-nal computers of Piezosurgery deviceswill not allow a loose or significantlydamaged Piezosurgery surgical tip toharm a patient.

Piezosurgery devices by Mectron have

been designed specifically to cut bonewithout harming the adjacent delicateanatomy. Furthermore, there are nearly200 published articles and several chap-ters in various text books that specificallypresent the safety and efficacy of Piezo-surgery devices by Mectron.

Q: I would think that the higher qual-ity lecturing clinicians would choose touse the very best Piezosurgery devicessince their reputations are obviouslyinvolved as well. Is this a fair assess-ment?

A: Well stated! I am honored to say thatseveral well-known, high-quality lectur-ing clinicians choose to use our Piezo-surgery devices by Mectron. I willmention a few of these doctors in NorthAmerica that you may be familiar with:Michael A. Pikos, Carl Misch, CraigMisch, Paul Fugazzatto, Dan Cullum,

PIEZOSURGERY(continued from page 1)

Yvan Poitras, Sascha Jovanovic, PeterMoy, Ole Jensen, Robert Levine, ScottGanz and, of course, I could mentionmany more.

Q: Wow! Does your company offer anyspecific training on your Piezosurgerydevices?

A: Yes we offer several ‘VIP TrainingCourses’ by leading clinicians, and tuitionis free for our customers.

Q: Where can readers buy a Piezo-surgery device by Mectron?

A: Thank you for asking! Piezosurgerydevices by Mectron are exclusively avail-able from Piezosurgery Incorporated. Youcan contact us at www.piezosurgery.us orcall 888-87-PIEZO to order. Stop by ourBooth #3636 to see our exciting showspecials!

productivity potential.1.Our studies have shown that in virtu-ally every practice a higher level of oper-atory organization must occur beforeconsistently high quality and productivitycan be achieved day in day out. 2.We have found that maximal organiza-tion efficiency cannot be achieved withan excessive equipment array. More isclearly not better.

Therefore, equipping for high perform-ance is both less expensive and more pro-ductive than conventional layouts. Yoursavings come in many areas:

1.You will decrease cabinetry expenses.2.A smaller room size is ideal for morecompact and efficient equipping.3.Central resupply of consumable prod-ucts reduces inventory needs.4.A cassette system saves money by re-ducing hand instrument expenses.5.As sterilization efficiency increases,

turn around time decreases.6. Compact, high performance offices areeasier and less expensive to clean.

Consolidating your treatment space suchthat it is truly shared by doctor and assis-tant just makes sense and it saves youmoney.
