YEAR 12 The end of Term 3 saw the school farewell Year 12 as they finished up at school and continued preparations for their final exams. Year 12 spent the final Wednesday enjoying a sit down lunch at the Long Table which was a great social event and allowed them all to be together as a group for a final time. A successful final assembly was then held on the Thursday with the Formal being held on the Friday night at the RSL Club. HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE The Higher School Certificate examinations began this week with students sitting the first English exam on Monday morning with exams running through to Friday 3 November. We wish all of the students the best for the exams and trust that all of the hard work that they have put in will be reflected in their results. We also wish all of the Year 12 cohort all of the best as they head into the next exciting phase of their lives. SCHOOL CAPTAINS Congratulations to our new School Captains Tallulah McKenzie and Sid Pearn and our Vice Captains Georgie McCalman and Pat Connell. I look forward to working closely with our new leaders within the school. I would also like to acknowledge all of those students who put their hands up to run for these positions and I hope that they will continue to display their obvious leadership skills throughout the remainder of their schooling. EXCURSIONS This term is a busy one for excursions. Last week our Year 11 students spent 4 days in Melbourne exploring the many career and further education opportunities that are available. This week has seen our Duke of Ed students involved in a three day hike under the guidance of Mr Perizzolo and Ms Norman. We also have the Great Vic Bike Ride ramping up as students and teachers prepare for this event in Week 8. Year 9 and Year 10 have their excursions coming up this term as well. Week 7 will see our very successful Year 10 Driver Education Program occur once again. This is a truly amazing program which is coordinated each year by a group of dedicated parents and community members and it is truly one of the best programs running in the state. ANDREW FULLER Andrew Fuller has recently been described as an ‘interesting mixture of Billy Connolly, Tim Winton and Frasier Crane” and as someone who “puts the heart back into psychology”. SCIENCE Year 8 VALID Science test The Validation of Assessment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID) Science test for Year 8 students will be held between Wednesday 1 November and Friday 10 November. This test is completed online and uses multimedia to test students on their scientific knowledge and skills. It takes approximately 70 minutes to complete. Students will be required to bring their own set of headphones/earbuds to complete the test. All Year 8 students from throughout the state complete this test and the students’ results give schools valuable data to use in the assessment of their teaching programs. Individual student reports will be sent out to parents early next year. If your child has a disability that needs special consideration please contact Mrs Blake to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test. A note containing more details has been sent home with the students.

ENGLISH NEWS Welcome back Last term we saw exciting things happening in our English classrooms, with many of our junior classes completing book week activities expanding their interest in reading and composing stories. Room 34 saw the introduction of new bookshelves and books, while room 10 continues to receive its makeover. This term will be very busy with students completing their current topics and beginning their final units for the year. Year 7 will sit their Yearly Literacy Test in Week 2 and Year 8 and 9 will complete their test in Week 4. All students should be making use of their practice time for these tests in class as well as reviewing topics and texts at home. As the end of the year draws nearer we would like to remind parents/carers that students should continue to engage with wide reading each night. We encourage students to discuss their reading with their teachers, peers and family members as they explore new topics, genres and texts.

SUPPORT CLASS The Support Class have enjoyed exploring objects that float and sink during Science lessons over the past couple of weeks. We have made plasticine and aluminium boats and explored which shapes best float. We held a competition to see whose boat could hold the most blocks before sinking; Brylie won convincingly with a deep-bottomed fishing-style boat.

YEAR 12 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY TIMBER Year 12 Industrial Technology Timber class had their

Major Design Projects marked by examiners. Both

Tom and Jesse did a magnificent job with their

project and accompanying folio.

Tom constructed an Outdoor Set consisting of a hardwood framed table with glass top and a hardwood chair and cowhide seat. Jesse made a double rocking chair to sit on the veranda at the family farm with the name of the farm laser cut in into a saw blade. The saw blade was sourced on the family farm.

YR 11 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY TIMBER We were very lucky to have a guided tour of the local Gulpa Sawn Mill by owner Ben Dankert. With Major Projects to commence early next term it was a great opportunity to see some local products up close. Ben explained the entire process from start to finish with the class full of questions and showing great interest in locally made Red Gum furniture.

CAREERS NEWS University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program 2018 The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high-achieving Victorian and select New South Wales and South Australian border high school students through their final two years of school. In 2007, the University of Melbourne welcomed 700 of Victoria’s most talented secondary students as the inaugural Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars. Ten years later, the number of Young Scholars who have participated in the program has reached more than 7000. KLD now attracts 500 participating schools, who nominate their best Year 10 students for the program. They've been chosen not only because there is a feeling that they will succeed and will do well in the University, but that they have qualities of leadership, engagement and involvement. The program benefits include; a taste of university life, the chance to meet and connect with other students like themselves, the opportunity to develop leadership and community involvement skills, access to University of Melbourne resources (all libraries), academics and events at the Parkville Campus. Suitable candidates have been approached and we encourage them to make applications which will close Monday 9 October 2017 at 11.59pm.

Work Experience 2018 – Year 9 All current Year 9 students are encouraged to start investigating Work Experience options in their preferred area of interest for 2018. Many organisations will open their online application process in the coming weeks/months (eg. Austin Health, Law Courts, Aquarium, Herald Sun). Melbourne Zoo Work Experience Applications are OPEN for 2018. See the Zoos Victoria Work Experience Program site for more information.

RIVERINA TENNIS Bree Collins and Eimear Gogarty travelled to Wagga after being chosen to represent Riverina in tennis. Being their manager, it was a privilege to take them away and they have represented Deniliquin High School in an excellent manner. They was very courteous on and off the court. This is the second year that Bree has been selected for this team. She continued to show her fighting spirit during each match. Bree had some great wins in both her singles and doubles matches and was a great role model for her younger team members. Eimear was equally impressive, especially since she is only in Year 7. Over the 3 days, she handled the pressure at such a young age with maturity. She had some great wins in her singles matches. Eimear played in the number 2 doubles position, often playing girls much older that her. She remained focused at all times and was a great team member. Riverina achieved an overall position of 8

th in the

State. Thankyou Vicki Breust (Riverina tennis convenor & Riverina girls manager) Temora High School

DENI BOYS U/15 BASKETBALL TEAM In a packed, loud and parochial Narrandera stadium, the boys held on to a record a 52-39 victory despite being one player down as Myles Amor was sent for jaw X-Rays after an accidental clash with the Narrandera big man’s elbow early in the game. Myles was taken to hospital by Ms Barker, which reduced us to seven Deniliquin players and a coach, versus a ravenous 100 plus local contingent. With Deni leading by 10 at quarter time, the opposition got within four points early in the second quarter behind some sustained loud cheering and chanting from the Narrandera faithful, spurring their team to some quick unanswered baskets. Deni took a time out, changed game plan and slowed the tempo down drastically, walking the ball up court into offence and making numerous passes before attempting a shot. This silenced the crowd and fatigued the Narrandera team as they were forced into an extended man to man defence to chase the ball, making simple defensive errors and leaving easy open lay ups for Deniliquin. This style of game continued through to half time with Deni leading by a handful of points. Deni came out with a completely different game plan of running and pressure in the second half and implemented this to astounding success. This began a 15 point run in the third quarter behind some absolutely relentless, dogged and intense defensive pressure from the entire Deni team. Particular mention must go Tomas Banks and Raymond Murphy who put immensely tough, but fair, pressure on their ball carriers causing repeated turnovers, including the ejection of one Narrandera player, blowing the Deni lead out to 15 at three quarter time. Keeping the same five Deni players, and game plan, from the end of third quarter to starting the last, took Deni to a 20 point lead early in the last. This broke the back of the Narrandera team and when a change in game plan again by Deni to walking the ball up into offence, spreading the court wide and passing the ball around to run the clock down and tire the opposition worked, it was fait accompli from there. The Deni boys only had two quick training sessions in preparation and the entire team implemented all the defensive principles of deny, help, recover, rebound which were instituted as a group. Combined with the team philosophies of hard, tough, fair, leave it all on the court - the boys did the school and themselves proud. It was a superb team effort with commendable efforts from every team member giving 110%. The team consisted of Ben East, Harry Hillier, Myles Amor, Tomas Banks, Cable Fitzpatrick, Kane Morris, Brad Poka, Raymond Murphy. Ryan McDonald and Will Shaw were on scoreboard and bench duties and must be thanked.

WOLLONGONG NETBALL Deniliquin High School put in a tremendous effort at the NSW Combined High School netball kockout held in Wollongong earlier in Week 7. Played at Illawarra Sports Centre in Berkely, 10 students took to the court on Tuesday and Wednesday playing seven games on the first day in a round robin format. The Deni side managed to muster up two wins, first defeating Glen Innes High School 17 to 15, before later having a convincing win of Callaghan College 26 to 15. The girls finished sixth in their pool, leaving them to play-off for positions from ninth to 16th. Unfortunately, due to fatigue, illness and injury rotations were kept to a minimum on the Wednesday, leaving the Deni side winless and finishing 16th overall. Standout players for the two days included the defensive combination of Emily Mildren and Jackie Thorpe, with outstanding shooting from Kate McCalman and Georgia Richards ran tirelessly for the two days in centre. Teachers Madeleine Gallagher and Miss Norman were impressed with how the girls handled themselves for the two-day carnival. ‘‘We could not be more proud of the girls,’’ Miss Gallagher said. ‘‘They were exceptional ambassadors for our school. ‘‘For the entirety of the carnival they displayed excellent sportsmanship and determination competing against the best teams in the state.’’

Crockart and her mother-in-law for driving the support vehicle and to Mrs Julie Eason and her staff at Mayrung school for hosting us and cooking our sausages.

ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW 2017 During the recent school holidays, I travelled to the Royal Melbourne Show with 5 of our junior students to exhibit dairy cattle. This is the tenth successive year that Deniliquin High School students have competed at Royal Melbourne, and as always, they were wonderful ambassadors of our school. During the week I received so many positive comments from the public and other exhibitors about the presentation of our animals and the conduct of our students. Matt Moorse was a big hit with the crowds, taking heifers from the bedding stalls to allow the public to pat and ask questions about our animals. We took six jersey heifers. The heifers were mostly from my own stud, Mayberry Jerseys. We also took Pasadena Jonquil, who was loaned to us from Janette Falls in Finley, along with Willow Dell Crystal from Steven and Fiona Waters of Deniliquin. Each student was designated a heifer that they were responsible for washing, grooming, clipping, and leading. Students exhibited their heifer in individual classes, where the animal was judged on its merits against other animals of a similar age, as well as in a showmanship competition where the students were judged on their ability to control, lead and present their animal. Five of our six heifers gained individual ribbons, with Sox, led by Jack Michael, being placed third in a large class to the eventual junior champion. Congratulations to Charlie Waters who was placed first in the showmanship class for 12-14 year olds and to Billy Michael who was third in the 14-16 year old class. We are fortunate to have a school which supports our students and is able to offer them wonderful experiences like this; to be able to lead an animal in

the ring at the Royal Melbourne show is a unique opportunity. My sincere thanks to Shane Moorse, who accompanied me on the trip and towed the trailer with the heifers in it. Also to our students, Ronan Waters, Billy Michael, Matt Moorse, Jack Michael and Charlie Waters, for a most enjoyable time and for being great ambassadors for our school. Mr.A.Michael

MAD SQUAD R U Ok? day is this week, Deniliquin High will be participated on Friday 15

th September. R U OK?'s

vision is for a world where we're all connected. Their mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. By staying connected and having meaningful conversations is something we can all do. You don't need to be an expert - just a great friend and a good listener. So, if you notice someone who might be struggling - start a conversation. There are four simple steps to ask R U OK? Ask the question R U OK? Listen to the response Encourage then to take action Check in with them The action can be as simple as encouraging them to seek support from someone, a trusted adult, teacher, counsellor, helpline, headspace. If you are really concerned you can talk to someone (usually a trusted adult) about your friend. On Friday at Lunchtime the MAD Squad were out and about in the playground. They were yellow shirts and students were able to come and talk or collect mental health resources. The positivity tree was out on display and student had the opportunity to write positive messages. In roll call students were given a R U Ok Day “Stronger Together” sheet. They were able to fill in it and share it with a friend. This is just one small way we can support each other to have positive mental health and to know that there is someone to talk to if you need it. On Thursday 14

th September part of the MAD Squad

supported Intereach in their R U Ok Day? Awareness stall at the Cressy Street Kiosk, this was just another small way that MAD Squad and Deniliquin High School are making a difference in the lives of those people around us to being about positive mental health.
