HEAD COACH DRAYSON HOUNSOME

Page 5

Drayson Hounsome returns for his second season as the head coach of the Rider University women’s soccer team.Hounsome is the fourth Rider head coach since women’s soccer became a varsity sport in 1997.

The 2007 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, Hounsome came to Rider prior to the 2008 season from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, where he finished the 2007 season with a program record 17 wins andadvanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.

Hounsome’s charge of returning the Broncs to the level they were at five years ago, when they won 23 games overtwo seasons, began when he brought in 12 new players for the 2009 season.

Hounsome is the winningest women’s soccer coach at C. W. Post with 85 wins (85-34-17) in seven seasons, 16more than the previous program record for Pioneer career wins. In 2007 two of his players earned honorable men-tion All-America honors and his team ended the regular season ranked seventh in the nation. Four of his C. W. Postteams were ranked in the Top 25.

“The academic reputation of the University, successful athletic department and great location make Rider an at-tractive choice for many high level student-athletes,” said Hounsome. “I look forward to leading the women’s soc-

cer program towards a MAAC championship.”Hounsome led his 2005 C. W. Post team to its first-ever NYCAC tournament championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II Women's

Soccer Championship tournament for the first time since 1999. C.W. Post finished the 2005 regular season with a No. 20 national ranking in theNSCAA/adidas Division II poll.

Under Hounsome the Pioneers’ team grade point average was above 3.20 his entire tenure, four times earning a national ranking. Prior tocoaching at C. W. Post Hounsome coached for five seasons as an assistant at Molloy College.

For nearly a decade, Hounsome was an important part of the soccer community, serving as National Director of Events and Online Opera-tions for Noga Soccer, where he began his coaching career in 1993. Hounsome has earned coaching licenses from both the United StatesSoccer Federation (USSF) and the National Soccer CoachesAssociation of America (NSCAA). He has coached club andselect teams in tournaments both in the United States andEurope and has coached in the Eastern New York OlympicDevelopment Program (ODP).

OUTLOOK

Page 6

Under second-year head coach Drayson Hounsome, the 2009Rider University women’s soccer team will have a new look, with 12 talented new players on the roster. The Broncs return

eight starters who will have plenty of competition for playing time.“The returning players had a great spring and are ready for the chal-

lenges of the new season,” Hounsome said. The returnees will be led by junior goalkeeper Alex Post, junior

forward Lauren Musumeci, senior center-mid Natalie Sica, junior cen-ter-back Kara Perkoski, senior back Kate Murphy, senior back StacyBelgiovene, senior midfielder Alison Brody and junior midfielder KimReichel.

Post played in the Rider goal for every minute of every game lastseason and over the last two years has played all but 14 minutes. As asophomore Post ranked tenth in the nation in saves. “Hopefully shewon’t have to make as many saves this year,” Hounsome said, “and canimprove on her save percentage and goals against average.” Post waseighth in the MAAC in save percentage last season. “It was a credit toher personality last year to keep pushing through the entire season. She worked tremendously hard in the spring and improved signifi-cantly as far as her strength and vertical jump. She is going to have astrong season. This year, with two other good goalkeepers, her per-formance should step up.”

The other two goalkeepers are freshmen Jenn Nichols and BrittanyHeil. Nichols compiled a 54-6-1 record at Exeter High School, includ-ing a 10-1 post-season record with nine shutouts, and set the New Hamp-shire Class L records with 31 career shutouts and 13 in one season. Heilcompiled 28 shutouts at St. John Vianney (New Jersey) High School.

“Jen and Brittany are solid keepers,” Hounsome said. “They are nottoo far away from Alex. We don’t know which one of the them will bethe second keeper, both are doing well in practice, they’re not makingmistakes and they are making good saves, so it will just have to playout as far as who can push Alex the most to get on the field. We needat least one of the new keepers to get some playing time this year.”

Musumeci led the Broncs in goals and points as a freshman and ledthe team in assists last year. “We brought in some talented midfield-ers, so Musumeci may be more utilized up top,” Hounsome said. “Shecan help us at forward and that should increase her scoring output.”

Sica played in all 19 games last season, starting 15, and is now aveteran of 50 Rider games, including 26 MAAC games. “Nat was ourMVP last year, playing five different positions over the course of theseason,” Hounsome said, “and this year we’ll focus on her being a cen-ter midfielder.”

Perkoski started all 38 games over the last two years, leading theteam in assists as a freshman. “We moved Perkowski to center-backand used her there throughout the spring,” Hounsome said. “She’s anatural defender so I think she’s more productive as a defender.”

Murphy played in all 38 games over the last two years, starting 32,including all 19 games last season, and is a veteran of 52 Rider games.“Murphy had a solid spring season and really improved her game,”Hounsome said.

Belgiovene started all 19 games last season and is now a veteran of51 Rider games. “Stacey has worked hard over the summer and hasincreased her levels of conditioning,” Hounsome said.

Brody started all 38 games the last two seasons after making 13

starts as a freshman. “If we play a 4-4-2 we’ll probably use Brody as oneof our wide midfielders,” Hounsome said. “We moved her around lastyear, never giving her a chance to settle, but this year if we play a 4-3-3 she’ll be one of the wide attackers.”

Reichel started all 19 games last year. “Kimmy has been a forwardand midfielder for us and this year we’re looking for her to be an at-tacking midfielder,” Hounsome said.

Also returning from injury is senior back Leslie Amster, who was aJunior College All-American before playing 36 games over two seasonsfor Rider, but missed last season with a knee injury. “Leslie is doingwell,” Hounsome said. “Her recovery was tough, but she had a goodrun in the preseason game, playing a solid 30 minutes and did well.”

A trademark of a Hounsome-coached team has been defense, evi-dent last year when Rider led the league in saves and in 2008 when hisC. W. Post team ranked second in the nation in defense, allowing justnine goals in 21 games. “Hopefully we won’t be as defensive as wewere last year,” Hounsome said. “We’ve got good personnel where wecan compete every game. This year we’re going into every game withthe ability to win the game. Last year we were overmatched manytimes, not on an even playing field. This year for the most part we’llbe on an even playing field with our opponents.”

Coach Hounsome went across several oceans to find goal scorers, taking two from England and one from Australia. “It’s good,” Houn-some said of his new international flavor. “It adds a whole different di-mension to the program. They bring to the program a different workethic, a different mind set. They’ve been playing on women’s teams, not youth teams, so their speed of play is good.”

The newcomers are led by freshmen Abi Cottam and Kate Stevens ofEngland and freshman Kelly Sandefur of Australia. “These players aregoing to be huge bonuses for the program and for the Conference as well,”Hounsome said. Abbi scores goals. She knows how to score. She has goodpace, good touch, a good shot, but the bottom line is she knows how toscore. With Sandefur, Cottam, Musumeci and freshman Alexis Coughlinwe have four players who can comfortably provide goals for us.”

Coughlin was twice a member of the Empire State team. “Alexis isa strong, athletic player who will provide us with multiple options bothup top and in midfield,” Hounsome said. “She has the ability to scorefrom distance as well as create opportunities fro those around her.”

Other additions to the roster include Meghan Mohr of HolstvilleNY, Angela Lozupone of Rockville, MD, Demi Mello of Mattituck,NY, Claire Thompson of East Greenwich, RI, and Angela Monaco ofHolstville NY and Kaitlin Wylie of Yardley, PA.

Mohr earned All-State honors as a senior defender at Sachem HighSchool. “Meghan is an intelligent, composed defender who is technicallyvery comfortable with the ball,” Hounsome said. “She has great speedand good positioning and can play anywhere on the defensive line.”

Lozupone “is a fast, tenacious midfielder who will cause a lot ofproblems for our opponents,” said Hounsome. “She has a great engineand will enable us to maintain a high intensity level both offensivelyand defensively.”

Mello was the 2007 Player of the Year, earning All-State. “Demi isa strong technical midfielder with good vision and passing ability,”Hounsome said. “We will be looking for her creativity to break downopponents in the attacking third.”

Thompson played on a pair of Rhode Island State Champion clubteams. “Claire has overcome several injuries in recent seasons, but isnow fully fit,” Hounsome said. “She is a technical, hard working playerwho will play in midfield or at the back for us.”

Monaco played for the Sachem Blazers club team which ranked 21stin the nation. “Angela will be a great addition to the left side of thefield for us,” Hounsome said. “She is a fast, tough player who will playeither as an attacking left fullback or wide midfielder.”

Wylie comes to Rider from nearby Pennsbury High School. “We arelooking for her to strengthen us both in midfield and defense,” Hounsomesaid. “She has the potential to be an outstanding player for the Broncs.”

In 2008 the Broncs spent most of the game on defense, being out-shot more than two to one. “We’re going to control the ball more thisyear,” Hounsome said. “Last year we turned it over more than weshould have. This year we’ll be able to possess the ball for longer pe-riods of time. And since the other team will have the ball less, we won’tcontinuously be defending.”

The Broncs also plan on scoring a few more goals in 2009. “We’llbe creating more chances this year,” Hounsome said. “We have per-sonnel that is more composed and we have more people who are usedto playing specific positions.”

Other than the offense, the biggest difference between 2008 and2009 will be the fact that the adjustment period is over. “After one yearI’m more settled here and the returning players are more comfortablewith me,” Hounsome said. “They know my style of coaching and Inow know how to motivate them, which is important.”

Last season the Broncs were able to tie regular season MAAC Cham-pion Loyola and took the eventual MAAC Champion, Fairfield, intoovertime. “The Loyola and Fairfield games were highlights of last sea-son, but we now know we can do more than that,” Hounsome said. Wehad a great spring season. They improved as a team 32 percent in theirstrength and conditioning exercises over the course of last year. That’spretty phenomenal. That has given the returnees a lot of confidence. We had a successful spring so I think our confidence is built up overthe course of this last year.”

The schedule begins August 28-30 at the U. S. Naval Academy’stournament, taking on Boise State and Fairleigh Dickinson. “TheNavy tournament is an interesting way to start the season,” Houn-some said. “Boise State will have two games under their belts beforewe open, but we will be well prepared from day one.”

Rider plays the home opener September 1 against Delaware Stateand returns home September 4 to host Sacred Heart. “We’ve got threegames in the first five days, so we’ll have to use multiple personnel inthose games,” Hounsome said. “That will give everyone an opportu-nity to show what they can do, and also to decide on what formationworks best.”

The Broncs play at Monmouth, at Lafayette, at NJIT and at St.Francis (PA) before hosting Wagner in the final non-conference game.“The non-conference schedule is more competitive to where we are asa program,” Hounsome said. “The conference schedule is tough, so thenon-conference schedule needs to prepare us for that. The non-confer-ence schedule needs to identify the areas we need to work on and togive us the confidence to go into MAAC play knowing that we cansucceed.”

With a dozen talented new players and eight veteran starters re-turning, the Broncs look to make a major jump in the conferencestandings this year, and succeed in the 10-team MAAC ChampionshipTournament, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex inFlorida. “I think we’ll surprise a few people,” Hounsome said. “We’vegot the potential to be successful.”
