CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Dixon called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
CARRIED
Chairperson Dixon opened the meeting by acknowledging the traditional territory of the Tsawwassen
and Musqueam First Nations, and all of the Coast Salish peoples who have been stewards of this land
since time immemorial.

YOUTH REPORTERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & DYSN
Mr. Ted Johnson, District Principal of Learning Services, introduced students Abnash Bassi,
Abhay Sachal, Ahmed Masood and Parvin Malhi who served as this year’s student representatives
on the District Green Committee and leaders of DYSN (Delta Youth Sustainability Network).
DYSN was created to give students the opportunity to come together and support and share ideas.
The students provided a presentation highlighting the following:
Elementary Assemblies
Use of social media including the creation of a Facebook page
Events – GreenStart Conference being held on October 26th
at Seaquam Secondary, and
the Spring 2018 Environmental Celebration.
Abnash and Parvin created a group called Student Leadership in Learning which works to create
sustainability oriented lessons for teachers. One project they are working on with teachers is a
Math 8 lesson: Price Savvy. They have created a Student Leadership in Learning Facebook page,
and are currently working on a website: http://studentleadershipinlearning.weebly.com/.
The students thanked Mr. Michael Iachetta, Sponsor Teacher, Ms. Marilyn Christensen, Energy
Manager, Mr. Ted Johnson, District Principal of Learning Services, and Mr. Frank Geyer, Director
of Facilities & Planning.
Mr. Iachetta thanked the students, and spoke about the Young Reporters for the Environment
International Competition. There were participants from thirty-five countries, and each country
handed out awards for first, second and third places. The first place winners then moved on to
compete against each other. Delta won six out of ten Canadian Awards.
Trustees thanked Mr. Iachetta for his work in this regard.
FARM ROOTS MINI SCHOOL
Farm Roots operates under the umbrella of Delta Secondary School, and is completing its first
year of operation at the former Boundary Beach Elementary school site. Ms. Tammy Veltkamp,
Teacher, spoke about the great team that includes Mr. Graham Harkley, Teacher, Ms. Brooke
Moore, District Principal of Inquiry & Innovation, Ms. Jeanette Beaulieu, Principal, and the
support of administration and the community. Ms. Veltcamp provided an update on activities this
year including:
Raised beds built for a variety of plants including kale, daffodils and garlic (funding for
supplies were donated by the South Delta Garden Society).
Christmas Business/Fundraiser – The students produced 111 gift boxes, and proceeds
are being used for farm improvements.
Visit by Elder Roberta Price who shared the history of Indigenous people, spoke about
sacred plants, and made medicine pouches with the students.
Planning and planting crops (seeds donated by West Coast Seeds).

What students are getting out of the program – Getting youth connected, life skills, and
understanding local food systems.
Community Connections – Working with White Spot and sponsors West Coast Seeds,
BackRoads Family Farm Market, Snow Farms, Emma Lea Farms, Dunbar Lumber,
and Double R Rentals.
Elementary School Visits.
Affiliation with Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Dr. Harbut, KPU Professor, has
been teaching sustainable agriculture at Farm Roots since January.
Things they are working towards – Chicken Coop, Greenhouse, Walk in Cooler, Fruit
Trees, Bee Hives and Irrigation System.
Over the Summer Farm Roots is partnering with Fresh Roots for crops and programs.
Teachers’ Highlights
o The students’ grades have increased on average by 10-15%.
o The Mini School has had visitors from Coquitlam, the Netherlands, Australia,
New Zealand and Germany.
o Five students have earned First Year University credits with KPU.
DELTA/SURREY REGIONAL HERITAGE FAIR
Ms. Diane Jubinville, District Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education, provided a presentation on
the 3rd
Annual Delta/Surrey Regional Heritage Fair that was held on April 28 & 29, 2017 at the
Harris Barn. The Heritage Fair is part of a nationwide initiative to encourage students to explore
Canadian history and heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Elder Ruth Adams
from Tsawwassen First Nation provided the opening. Ms. Jubinville, Ms. Karen McDonald,
Elementary Aboriginal Success Coordinator, and Trustee Windsor were all judges at the event.
Students from Gibson, Heath Traditional and Neilson Grove Elementaries won awards, and will
be moving on to the Provincials.

BOARD OF EDUCATION REPORT
Chairperson Dixon reported on the following activities she recently attended:
Boys & Girls Club Foundation AGM on May 23.
Crossroads United Church Community Dinner on May 27, also attended by Trustee Windsor
and her husband, and Councillor Bruce McDonald.
Dance Academy Final Show at Delta Secondary on May 30.
Opening of the new Musical Garden at Diefenbaker Park on June 1.
Child & Youth Council meeting on June 2, chaired by Ms. Angelidis.
BC School Centred Mental Health Coalition – A BCSCMHC partner, DASH BC, is working
with the Ministries of Education and Health to pull together a “one stop shop” for all
curriculum resources around Physical Health and Education Curriculum.
South Delta Secondary’s Creation Art Show
Rotary Youth Awards where 34 students were recognized for helping in their community,
demonstrating compassion and empathy for others, showing inner strength in overcoming
adversity and setting an example for others, or acting on a global level. There was special
recognition for 3 students who created the IDEA (Inclusivity, Determination, Encouragement
and Altruism) after school drop in program at Sands Secondary. The program hosts 35-75
youth, and provides a place for students to form good connections. Nutritional snacks are also
included.
District Retirement & 25 Year Event is tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at South Delta Secondary.
Chairperson Dixon wished Trustees all the best for their upcoming Valedictory and Awards
Ceremonies they will be attending, and wished everyone an enjoyable and restful summer.
ANNUAL REPORT ON THE ABORIGINAL EDUCATION ENHANCEMENT AGREEMENT
Ms. Diane Jubinville, District Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education, acknowledged the
Traditional Territory and the Indigenous people and Elders that were present at this evening’s
meeting. Ms. Jubinville presented the Annual Report on the Aboriginal Education Enhancement
Agreement (AEEA), and provided the following highlights:
District Review.
Pilot Projects at Sands, Delta and South Delta Secondaries.
Teacher Professional Learning and workshops offered at District Day, including a
blanketing exercise.
Truth and Reconciliation at Delview Secondary.
Recognition Ceremony for Grade 7’s and 12’s transitioning into secondary school and
post-secondary institutions.
6 Year Completion Rates for Aboriginal Students – In 2016 Delta students moved out of
the 60’s (where the rates have been steady since 2012) and into the 70’s.

Highlights/Successes – Staff Positions, Model of Indigenous Education (WIP), Orange
Shirt Day, Parents Gatherings in the Fall 2016, New Curriculum Implementation Building
Teacher and School Capacity, School Contact Professional Learning Day, Elder Roberta at
the Farm School, Ready, Set, Learn Events, Storytelling with Roy Henry Vickers for Delta
and Surrey teachers, and Cultural Camp at Deas Island Park.
Where are we going:
1. Support for schools to help ensure success at all grades.
2. Support for teachers to help weave Aboriginal perspectives into the curriculum.
3. Ongoing community involvement including TFN, Curriculum Development with
TFN: Treaty Video, Seasonal Calendar.
4. Respond to directions determined through the AEEA and Equity Scan.
Trustees thanked Ms. Jubinville and staff for the work they are doing. Chairperson Dixon
conveyed her appreciation for the growth in the program, and the involvement from partners, the
community, and parents. This report shows the progress made and the distance we still need to go.

THAT the Delta Board of Education approve the Annual Report on the Aboriginal Education
Enhancement Agreement and direct staff to forward the report to the Ministry of Education.

IB FEES
Mr. Bauman reported that the timing is a bit out of sync as the fee schedule provided has already
gone out to families. Mr. Bauman will present the 2018/2019 fee schedule to the Board in
October/November as the payments commence in January.
