Bill andreetta had a great story about sunnyvalley
Bill Andreetta’s first company was Manteca Meat Service founded in 1990.
The museum stage exhibit this month features some tools of the trade from the ‘butcher shop’, and Sunny Valley Smoked Meats.
Bill Andreetta, CEO of Sunnyvalley, gave a nice talk about his career, and what the trip has been like along the way. Going back to Bill’s purchase of the Manteca Meat Service from
dad, Willy, in 1972 upon his return from the Army, Bill eventually founded Sunny Valley Smoked Meats in 1990. A lot of hard work and good people have paid off. Manteca is fortu-nate to have such a fine company right here in our area, and Bill and family feel the same about their community, which they promote every day! Thanks to Bill for his interesting program and to the largest turn-out of history buffs we’ve hosted for pro-gram night! (More photos p.7)
DICK DURHAM TO TALK at museum
ABOUT his career in local education
Those who went to East Union High School in the Manteca area in the mid 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s may well have had Dick Durham as a principal. If you or your kids went to Grant Un-ion, the Manteca Adult School, Calla Continua-tion High, Ripon High, Tokay, Bear Creek, Lin-den, Weston Ranch, or even Sierra High in years-gone-by Dick may have been engaged in those schools at one time or another, as well. With an expansive career that lasted 18
years at East Union High and over 20 years be-yond, Dick gave his life to education and showed his dedication even after retirement with an impressive 40+ years of contributions to local area education. Whether in admin-istration, counseling or interscholastic athletics, his commitment to edu-cation make him a per-fect choice for the Man-teca Historical Society’s program speaker on Thursday, August 11th.
We welcome Dick Durham

NEWS BRIEFS
Clancy Rogers Museum Manager
For those of you that are not aware, the museum recently had our main roof repaired at a cost of about $14,000. This would have not been possible without the support from our members and friends. Thank you for your memberships and donations. With your help, we will always attempt to maintain our museum at the highest level of quality.
Our newsletter is published every month, and in it we attempt to share information about the history of Manteca and the surrounding area, news on upcom-ing events, and what’s happening at the museum currently.
If you would like more information about any of the news items you’ve read about in the newsletter, please contact me in person at the museum during business hours, 209-825-3021, or feel free to call me at 209-822-0932 before 9 pm in the evening.
Do you have an article about local history that you’d like to share with fellow society members? Please contact me.
If you would like to receive your newsletter by e-mail or would rather read it on the website at www.MantecaMuseum.org, please contact me at 209-825-3021 or e-mail me at: [email protected]

THE MUSEUM
On August 6, 1975 the El Rey Theater, pictured above, was destroyed by a fire that gutted the en-tire building. The fire was reported at 2 am by Man-teca Police officers Sgt. Larry Cook and Clancy Rog-ers when they saw smoke coming from a side vent on the building. The Manteca Fire Department re-sponded immediately and began battling the fire. Because of the height of the building, it was neces-sary to request mutual aid from Tracy’s Fire De-partment and their ladder truck. With their assis-tance the fire was extinguished after several hours. The interior building was a total loss. Ironically, it was the last night that the film The Towering Infer-no had shown. The building was never used again as a movie theater, but was later remodeled and became Kelly Bros. Brewery & Restaurant, which has since closed. The vacant building still stands there today in the 100 block of East Yosemite Ave. as a re-minder of Manteca’s past.

Last month, we lost Bill Cabral, a close friend of not only the Manteca Museum, but many oth-ers in our community, and beyond. Bill Cabral and wife, Miriam, bothcharter-members of the Manteca Historical Society have supported worthy causes throughout our community well-aside from run-
ning a successful auto business over the years. Bill will be missed. We extend our gratitude and condolences to the Cabral family and friends.
- DAVID R. MuellER - We also lost retired Manteca Superintendent of Public Works , David Mueller, who was also a long-time support-er of the Manteca Historical Society and Museum. His community support also went well beyond the museum’s cause and he, too will be deeply missed. It is said that he will be remembered for his “zest for life and his love and kindness for all”. We also ex-tend our gratitude and condolenc-es to David’s family and friends.
Manteca lost TWO good friendS:

Shown above is the Mendosa’s Mens Wear store as it appeared in 1959, located in the 100 blk. of W. Yosemite Ave. The store opened in 1916 as Mendosa’s shoe store. A few years later the store added men’s wear and the name was changed to Mendosa’s Mens Wear. In 1985 the store added a women’s line of clothing. The store closed for business in 1990 after 75 years of service to the community.

MEMORIAL & HONORs PROGRAM
This is a very special way to re-member those who have passed away, or to honor one for a special event, or tribute. Gifts are normally tax deductible, and the names of those remembered are then in-scribed in the ”Honor Roll Book”, which is on permanent display at the museum. Printed form-envelopes are available at the museum, and on the museum’s website. Many thanks to past and pre-sent contributors for remembering friends and loved ones with a gift to the Manteca Museum.
On our website, just click on the Memorials tab at top at www.TheMantecaMuseum.org,, or stop in to pick up an envelope at the museum docent desk during normal hours. If you can not make it in, you can also call Clancy Rogers (209)825-3021 for more information, or to receive a gift envelope(s) by mail.
Thank you!

Treva and Bill Andreetta, at the Manteca Museum, just after Bill’s talk about the history of Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats.
Museum board 2nd Vice President, Marvin Brocchini, provided the introduction of Bill Andreetta for July’s museum program.
There was a record-crowd on hand for Bill Andreetta’s July 11th program about Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats, as friends, family and employees turned out in his honor.
