    Nuclear - Chemical Decontamination Kit

1 5 gallon bucket with lid

    1 spray bottle (portable shower)

    1 bulb syringe

    2 large bath towels

    4 washcloths

1 pkg. baby wipes1 small bottle of liquid soap

    1 small bottle of shampoo

    1 39 gallon size (2 mil) yard/trash bag

    1 twist tie

1 small bottle liquid household bleach

    1 tablespoon

5 * gallons or more of water per person

1 * small basin (for sponge bath)

1 * large basin or kiddie pool

(large enough to stand in to catch all

    decontaminated water. A large 39

gallon yard/trash bag will due in theabsence of something better.)

1 * Rad or Radiac meter

    * apart from Decon Kit but necessary

Before entering your shelter after a nuclear or chemical incident you need to decontaminate your

    entire body.

1- Carefully open and arrange your decon kit in such a way that you can reach everything and

still keep all possible contamination in one localized area.

2- Step in to the large basin so it can catch all water and decontamination coming off of your

body. A large 39 gallon yard/trash bag will due in the absence of something better.

3- Carefully strip off all of your clothes. Yes all of them. This is not a fashion show or a time to worry

about modesty rather a time to worry about saving your life. Put ALL of you clothes in the 39

    gallon bag.

4- Remove ALL jewelry and plastic coated pictures, identification cards, etc. you may want to

save and put them aside. These to will have to be decontaminated with water so realize you

will not be able to save non-plastic coated papers or cloth items.

5- Open a spray bottle and fill it with water and spray your entire body head to toe with emphasis

on all the hair on your body, wherever it is.

6- Take one washcloth and wipe down you entire body head to toe, starting with the genital areaand orifices, then the face then the rest of the body. Place the wash cloth in the 39 gallon

    bag.

7- Open the spray bottle again and fill it again, this time, with 1 tablespoon of bleach (if it is a

chemical incident - if it is nuclear, straight water is okay) and spray you entire body again. Be

careful around eyes, ears, nose, and mouth not to do this area if you are using the bleach

solution. You do not need bleach in those parts.

8- Fill the small basin water, and with the liquid soap, shampoo, the remaining water in the spray

bottle, and a DIFFERENT wash cloth, soap up and scrub your entire body (especially cracks

and crevasses and your jewelry and id cards you want to save. You cannot save cloth or

    paper items.

9- Fill up your spray bottle one or more times and rinse down your body completely.

10- Open the baby wipes package and use one or more to clean around your eyes, nose,

    mouth and ears.

11- Blot dry off completely and step out of the large basin. Place all towels and washcloths into the

    39 gallon bag.

12- If it is a nuclear incident, with the Rad meter, take readings over your entire body AWAY from

your decontamination basin and contaminated clothes and water. You need to bring the

radiation level down to 1 R. or less.

13- Repeat the process if necessary using clean towels and washcloths.

14- Seal up the 39 gallon plastic bag with the wire tie and place as far away from the shelter door

as possible with out risking further contamination.

15- Once you are clean you may enter your shelter and put on some clean clothes.
