South Central Middle School News from the 7th and 8th Grade We have the Right Mental Attitude

As December blows in the 7th and 8th graders have been very busy in the classroom. The teachers have also been busy making connection across the curriculum to the season at hand.
The 8th grade students are currently preparing their Christmas Around Our World presentations. The students work together in pairs and, after choosing a country, research the many ways other cultures celebrate the Christmas holiday. Ms. Stoneham and Mr. Bedingfield‘s classes are busy working on a research paper and a multimedia presentation. Students will be learning how to present using an ipad with such presentation tools as Prezi and PowToon. These presentations will be conducted in the Library to a large audience of 7th and 8th graders. The 8th graders who are taking Spanish are required to do their projects on a Spanish speaking country. Also, the students have the option of preparing a Christmas dish popular in their perspective countries to share with the class. After the presentations, parents will be able to view the projects on the 8th grade wiki.
The SCMS seventh graders will be taking a field trip on December 12 to see a live stage version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. The students will be reading and studying a dramatic presentation of the play in Ms. Stoneham’s reading class prior to the performance.
The 21st Century skills class is currently doing educational reviews of apps and websites. Students are learning how to evaluate apps before downloading them to a mobile device along with understanding the educational value of each app. Students are using Airservers to mirror the apps

onto a computer where they then use screencasting software to record each app
session. Once they record each app session they voice over each app and apply annotations to each video. Students will be posting their reviews to our 8th grade wiki to share with everyone. In 7th grade English students are currently working on thesis statements for the "When I'm a senior" project. Students are listing goals and how they will want to achieve them in the next five years. After writing a 5 paragraph essay, students will take a picture and laminate their writing as a keepsake. Students will be given these back at the end of their 8th grade year to remind them of the goals they set
for themselves. These are usually kept for graduation parties for people to read and share a laugh!
After numerous delays due to wind and rain the 8th grade science classes were able to launch their model rockets for the 26th consecutive year. Model rockets were launched as part of a unit on outer space that was studied in science.
At the beginning of the school year the 8th graders in Multimedia class created their first TNT, Trojan News Today, video. It featured news and sports highlights, new student interviews, a public service announcement, a science segment, and much more. The TNT videos are located on the 8th grade wiki at https://sc247.wikispaces.com/Trojan+News+Today, if you'd like to check them out. Students in Multimedia 8 also spent some time learning the editing tools of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Students in Multimedia 7 kicked off the school year by creating spreadsheets and graphs in Microsoft Excel. Students created a Veterans Day Keynote slide show and an iMovie project. Recently, each student created a Google Presentation that will be embedded into their website. When a student leaves junior high, what happens to all of their school work? In Multimedia 7 and 8, students embark on a journey of recording their “best” work in an e-portfolio. Creating a website is a great way for students to display their work and show proof of their skills to a larger audience. This year Multimedia 7 and 8 students used Weebly for Education to create e-portfolios of their classwork. The e-portfolios are "works in progress" as students add to their websites on a weekly basis. To view some of the student websites, visit http://www.mrsoneyscomputerlab.com/student-websites.html.
