Reflecting on God’s Word A LITTLE GOOD NEWS Many years ago, Canadian singer Ann Murray had a hit song that spoke of her frustrations as she listened to the radio and read the headlines. She sang that “we sure could use a little good news today.” It strikes me that this is the message that the readings want us to leave with this week. The Gospel Antiphon proclaims, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because God has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor” (from Isaiah 61:1 and Luke 4: 18). John the Baptist is here to testify to the light, to the Good News.

WILL THE REAL MESSIAH PLEASE STAND UP? The Jewish people were waiting for their messiah, they were waiting for a hero. They prodded John several times trying to figure out what his role actually was, and to see what he knew. It became a guessing game. He tried to say nothing, but finally answered in a humble fashion, “I am not he.” He baptized with water as a means of leading people to the coming Christ and helping them to prepare. He somehow avoided the trappings of success that would turn his light on himself. Today he remains a road sign for us, pointing out Christ our Light.

We all want someone to rescue us, and most likely to fix the mistakes and errors that we continue to make as individuals and as nations. Much of that is human nature. Would there be as much fascination with superheroes if this were not the case? How many times do you as an adult turn to your folks for advice, or wish you could talk to a deceased parent? Some need help emotionally, others spiritually, others financially. The reality is that it is tough to get your “ducks in a row” and always has been. Today’s encouraging message is for us to always look to the Light for our help. May we always be like John the Baptist and testify how Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, has been our Savior. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios UN POCO DE BUENAS NOTICIAS Hace muchos años la cantante Ann Murray tuvo una canción exitosa que hablaba de sus frustraciones mientras escuchaba la radio y leía los encabezados de los periódicos. Ella cantaba “seguro que hoy podemos usar un poco

de buenas noticias”. Me parece que este es el mensaje que las lecturas quieren que dejemos esta semana. La antífona del Evangelio proclama: “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí. Me ha enviado para anunciar la buena nueva a los pobres” (frase en Isaías 61:1 y Lucas 1:18). Juan el Bautista está aquí para dar testimonio de la luz, la Buena Nueva.

POR FAVOR, ¿SE PUEDE PONER DE PIE EL VERDADERO MESÍAS? El pueblo judío esperaba a su mesías, esperaba a un héroe. Hicieron varias cosas y varias veces a Juan para tratar de averiguar cuál era su papel en realidad, y ver qué era lo que sabía. Se convirtió en un juego de adivinanzas. Él trató de no decir nada, pero finalmente respondió de manera humilde: “Yo no soy él”. Él bautizó con agua como un medio para guiar a las personas hacia el Cristo que vendría y ayudarles a prepararse. De alguna manera evitó las trampas del éxito que encenderían su luz sobre sí mismo. El mensaje alentador de hoy es que siempre veamos a la Luz por ayuda. ¡Qué siempre seamos como Juan el Bautista y testifiquemos cómo Jesucristo, la Luz del mundo, ha sido nuestro Salvador!

Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations and shows our dependence on God.

DSF-2020 -- Closing the Gap! Diocesan Services Fund for 2020

It’s been a while since we talked about the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF), but we’re

coming to the end of the year and we have to. Our 2020 DSF Campaign started great – until COVID-19 hit and everything changed.

For many of us our sources of income diminished, or stopped. Bills at St. Cyril continued to arrive, like all the rest of us, but our source of income dropped seriously. Like many other families and churches we had to focus on bringing in enough money to be able to do the fundamental work of our St. Cyril parish: Mass,

Confessions, Passing on the Faith, Upkeep of our Building, etc.

Our own parish needs have not changed or diminished as we approach the end of the year. But we also, as a parish, have an obligation to the larger church, our Archdiocese. Each year we address that need through

our contributions to the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). DSF supports more than 60 ministries and programs that serve the faithful of the Archdiocese and us too, here at St. Cyril

This year, Cardinal DiNardo has assessed our parish DSF Goal at $177,000. So far you have contributed $107,570 towards this goal – Thank You!!Thank You!!Thank You!!!!!

We still have $69,430 to raise.

I know that we are in difficult economic times, and we have been challenged to give in all kinds of ways, yet each of us has been blessed in so many ways, and we are called to share those blessings with others. We missed our DSF goal for 2019 by approximately $17,000, which we had to pay out of our operating

budget. This year we need the help of everyone so let’s pray and then give, in order to Close the GapClose the GapClose the Gap.

DSF-2020 -- ¡Reducir la diferencia! Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos - 2020

Hace un tiempo hablamos sobre el Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF), pero como nos

estamos acercando al final del año, tenemos que hablar de nuevo. Nuestra campaña DSF 2020 inicio muy bien, hasta que llegó el COVID-19 y todo cambió.

Para muchos de nosotros, las fuentes de ingresos disminuyeron o se detuvieron. Las facturas en San Cirilo siguieron llegando y nuestra fuente de ingresos se redujo seriamente. Como muchas de las familias e iglesias,

tuvimos que enfocarnos en obtener el dinero suficiente para poder llevar a cabo el trabajo primordial de nuestra parroquia de San Cirilo: como la misa, confesiones, transmisión de la fe, mantenimiento de nuestro edificio, etc.

A medida que nos acercamos al final del año, las necesidades parroquiales no han cambiado ni disminuido. Como parroquia, también tenemos una obligación con la iglesia en nuestra Arquidiócesis. Cada año abordamos esta necesidad a través de nuestras contribuciones al Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF). DSF apoya a más de 60
