The Holy Father’s December Prayer

Intention Universal: For the Elderly That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations.

I had nothing to report here last week in regards to the NFL. I have to make up for that this week. The season is nearing its end. Including this weekend, there are five games left to the regular season. There does seem to be a little less protesting going on among the teams concerning the “taking a knee” effort. That is good news. The Green Bay Packers had a horrible game two weeks ago when our backup quarterback, Brett Huntley, was sacked six times, threw three interceptions, and lost a fumble. This is not exactly how you win a game and of course they didn’t. They lost to the Ravens 23 to 0. It had been eleven years to the day since they had been shut out at Lambeau Field. This was a game that again seemed indicative of the season after losing our starting quarterback. Then there was last week. They played the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Steelers came in with an 8 and 2 record versus the Packers at 5 and 5. Pittsburgh was a 14 point favorite. So I expected a blowout. The statement, “Ye of little faith,” certainly applied to me. I say that because the Packers were in it all throughout the game. They had a chance at the end to win or at least take it into overtime, but with the clock running out the Steelers made a 53 yard field goal to win the game 31 to 28. Obviously, I wanted a win for the Packers, but I was pleased they did as well as they did considering their recent history. My hope is that they redeem themselves this week against the Buccaneers in Green Bay. Of course I also hope for victories the next four weeks against the Browns (that may work) and the Panthers, Vikings, and Lions (all less likely) after that. That potentially would carry them to the playoffs. The point, as this column is written, is that there is still hope for the season.

That hope is very fitting as we begin this new liturgical year and season today. This is the First Sunday of Advent. For three additional Sundays or three weeks we celebrate that time of preparation for Christmas. We use these weeks to again get ready to mark the anniversary of the birth of Our Lord. Advent and the start of a new Church year provide the opportunity to renew our faith, to increase our prayer, and to recommit ourselves to deepen our love for and life with Christ. This season is less solemn and less penitential than Lent. But it still is a time to make sacrifices for the glory of God. I realize the world tells us just the opposite. Our secular society sees this as Christmas already. The stores, radio stations, ads on TV and in the papers would have us believe Christmas is here. Additionally for example, from this perspective it is already a time to host and/or attend Christmas parties. We rather easily can lose the whole concept of a preparatory season. I am not suggesting at all that it is sinful to buy gifts, hear Christmas songs, or go to Christmas parties these next three weeks. But we don’t want to lose the prayerful, somewhat penitential chance to grow further in holiness that Advent offers us. This is truly a beautiful time of the year. Each liturgical season reflects aspects of the life of Christ and by extension of our own lives as well. Advent is meant to be a bit more somber than what some may make it, and in turn Christmas is meant to be festive.

Ways that we can keep Advent more liturgically correct include praying more. Perhaps a daily Rosary or stop in the Adoration Chapel, if we aren’t already. If we don’t go to daily Mass, that also could be a way to increase our prayer lives. Going to confession over the next three weeks would also be wonderful. We could also pray a Christmas novena. We could celebrate the special feast days of Advent. We could have our Advent wreath and calendar. We could erect a Jesse tree or read the Gospel passages of the Nativity. All of these will keep us focused as we begin anew this Advent and prepare for Christmas. Have a holy Advent!

~ In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann

week; Place it in the offertory baskets at Mass; or Place in the black poor box in the north

vestibule. Your generosity will help bring the spirit of Christmas giving to the families of Madison and Culpepper Counties and to the residents at Manor Care. May the Peace of the Christ Child fill your home!

Gi for Life Tags Also on Giving Trees You will also notice special tags on the Giving Trees labeled “Gift for Life,” which seek support for the diocesan pregnancy assistance and post-abortion healing ministries, and the women, men and children they serve. LINK Thank You and Current Needs St. Veronica is one of the participating churches for LINK helping those in the Western Fairfax and Eastern Loudoun Counties. Many of you have helped with LINK as delivery folks or as Food Pantry sorting helpers. We thank you for all you have done for getting food donations to those who are in need at this time. Your assistance is very much appreciated by the LINK board and by those it serves. Maybe you aren't able to assist in these ways but still have a heart for helping those who are less fortunate. There are other ways to help, even from your own home. Here are LINK’s current needs: Treasurer: Begin work with the current Treasurer and assume the Treasurer role in early 2018. A background in accounting with knowledge of QuickBooks is recommended. Contact current Treasurer Ron Smith at 703-216-9588 or via email to [email protected]. Packing: LINK is planning to host a new packing training and would like to get all potential volunteers the information. We deliver Tuesdays--Saturdays all year long and need packers for this process. You can pack on YOUR schedule, mornings, afternoons, evenings or Saturdays. If you are interested or want more information, contact Kathy Proctor at [email protected]. Food Coordinator: A volunteer is needed to contact clients who have requested help via our phone system. The volunteer would obtain the info needed and send out the delivery info during their shift. The work could be done from home. The time frames we need volunteers are the first half of January, the second half of July and the first half of September. For more information, c o n t a c t L i s a L o m b a r d o z z i a t [email protected].

Lessons and Carols with St. Veronica Choir The All Saints Parish Choir, All Saints Handbell Choir Resounding Joy, and the Saint Veronica Adult Choir present an evening of Scripture lessons and beloved Advent carols, hymns, and motets to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The service, based on the Lessons and Carols made famous at King’s College, Cambridge, will be on Saturday, December 16th, at 7:30-9:00 pm, at All Saints Catholic Church, in Manassas.

Words of Our Lady of Fa ma “There are many wars and discords in the world. Wars are only punishments for the sins of the world. It is necessary to do penance. If the people amend themselves, Our Lord shall still come to the aid of the world. If they do not amend themselves, punishment shall come.”

Homeless Outreach: Many thanks to all who have been so supportive of our efforts to serve the homeless men and women in our local area. Our teens visited the homeless through Matthew 25 ministries on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The men and women there were delighted to spend time with our parish youth. We are excited to go back again on December 15th. In the meantime, we are now collecting handwarmers, gloves, and socks (thick warm men's socks requested) to take with us. Donations can be dropped in the wooden bins in the vestibules by December 10th. The donations will be of great help. December 8th Family Advent Dinner: On Friday, December 8th in celebration of the Immaculate Conception (a Holy Day of Obligation), we will hold a pot luck dinner following the 7:30 pm Mass. Families are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] with your dish and number attending. (There will be no regular IGNITE this evening.) All are welcome. December 10th: Youth Apostolate is sponsoring donut Sunday and is looking for adult and youth volunteers after all morning Masses. Please let us know if you’re able to help. Sunday Scene—Advent Caroling and Living Nativity: On Sunday, December 10th, all youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join us for a fun afternoon of singing and joy at a local nursing home. We will meet at 1:00 pm in the parish hall for a quick pizza lunch and rehearsal. Then we will load up to carpool to the nursing home. The afternoon will include a living nativity scene, music, and visiting with the residents. Youth musicians are welcome to bring instruments with pre-approval. If you’d like to know more, email [email protected]. A Youth Apostolate permission slip is due by December 3rd. There’s no cost for the day. Dressy attire requested. March for Life and Life is Very Good: The time has come to sign up for your spot for the March for Life. Space on the bus is very limited this year. Youth in grades 7-12 who are not St. Veronica School students may sign up with Youth Apostolate by submitting $20 and a permission slip to the parish office. St. Veronica School students must sign up through your teacher. We will all be going together to the Life is Very Good morning Rally and the March for Life. Save the date, January 19th, 2018 and sign up to join us for this very special opportunity to give peaceful, prayerful witness to the sacredness of human life.

Who Is Saint Nicholas? Saint Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in Tur-key in the 4th century. He was a martyr and must have been a loving man—which is why we still know his name and why he is always re-membered at Christmastime. Many stories about his life were told and retold, how he was so kind and generous to the poor, to children and to those unjustly imprisoned. The legends tell us that he gave anonymously, did not seek praise, but wanted good things to be done and the hearts of children to be delighted. While Nicholas remains a very popular saint in eastern Europe, particularly in Russia, he be-came known in a different way further West, in places such as Holland—as “Sinterklaas,” the secret bringer of gifts to children on the eve of his feast day, December 6th. It is easy to see how the Sinterklaas of Amsterdam became the Santa Claus of New Amsterdam, now New York.

The Advent Wreath The Advent wreath is a seasonal reminder that we are a people of hope who are rooted in the fidelity of God’s love, made visible in the person of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World. The greens and the circular shape of the wreath symbolize the everlasting life found in Christ. The candles represent God’s Son as the Light who comes into the world.

There are four candles that are lit, one additional each week, repre-senting the four weeks of Advent as well as the long period of hopeful expectation for the coming of the Messiah. The purple color of three of the candles reminds us that Advent is a penitential season. The rose colored candle is lit on the Third Sunday of Advent, which is called

Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word meaning “rejoice.”

Some families place the Advent wreath on the dining room table and light it each evening before grace. A ceremony like the one reprinted below may be used and modified each day to incorporate a daily reading. Another option is to place the wreath in the living room or family room where the family can gather to pray the Rosary around the wreath. On Christmas day, the candles of the wreath can be replaced with white or red candles. By adding some decorations, this wreath can con-tinue to be used as a Christmas centerpiece.

Blessing of the Advent Wreath Lord God, Your church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior,

Who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin.

Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; May their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, forever and ever.

Advent Wreath Ceremony

As we light the first candle (and an additional candle each week), we pray: Father in Heaven, increase our longing for Christ Our Savior and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of His coming may find us rejoicing in His presence and welcoming the Light of His truth.

Readings: Sunday: Is 63:16b-17, 19b, 64:2-7; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Mk 13:33-37 (Daily readings are listed in the bulletin each week on page 3.)

Response to Reading: Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord. Closing Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus, into our home. We want to prepare a way for you, even to the door of our hearts. Help us to ready ourselves to receive you, and to share your peace as we joyfully wait. Come, Lord Jesus, come. Amen.
