IN REMEMBRANCE Let us pray for all who have died, that they may rejoice with the Risen Lord,

especially:

Jaime Ramos and Donald McAbee

Dear Parishioners:

When a couple is expecting the first child, the father- and moth-er-to be will often discuss the changes that they will have to make in their pattern of living and the differences another person in the house will make. Yet parents will tell you that when the child is actually born, it was not that they had to make changes in their lives but they had a totally different life. The Visitation is an Advent reflection about the preparation for the coming of The Child into our lives as Mary prepared. The coming of Christ to us is not merely that we take on a different ritual of prayer or another code of ethics or a certain set of beliefs it is all that and more for we take on a new life. It might seem strange to find the story of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, as it were, stuck in here on the eve of Christmas. However, behind the story, lies the whole world of the ancient Testament about to burst into new life in the glory of the New Covenant. We see both Mary and Elizabeth express a total acceptance of the situation that is almost beyond belief. Mary and Elizabeth had difficulties to cope with in their pregnancy. Mary was not yet living with Joseph and people would talk about who the father of the child might be. A greater burden would be how to explain to Joseph, how could he not be troubled over her? Elizabeth was too old for child-bearing and the rearing of a child could not have been an easy prospect. She had the added difficulty of a husband who had lost his speech! Such is the simple human background to the story Luke tells. Against its problems the strong faith of each stands out. Each trusts in the Lord, sure that he will fulfil his promise and ac-cepting to be involved in his purpose of salvation. Each could also reach out to the other in faith and trust. Their faith in God was not a private affair. They could share the joy of their common experience both of trusting in God and of being blessed by him in the children they are carrying. In their mutual recognition, they are for each other a source of strength and support with the joy that this brings. Often enough the last people to know what our faith means to us are those closest to us. Mary and Elizabeth each found themselves in a situation where probably they could not communicate with the men closest to them, but in their friendship they could find support to accept their situa-tion, waiting for the Lord's time to resolve it. Mary had a long sad and hard road to travel but so simply and graphically Luke portrays this moment of intensity in the life of Mary and Elizabeth (and John) that it could be described as untrammeled ecstasy. Mary is the one character in this gospel incident who remains a character through-out the full sweep of the story. There are people at the beginning and end but the mother of Jesus is always there and Luke shows her, after the Ascension, praying with the infant Church. Mary faced many questions it was not for her to answer and situations it was outside her providence to change. She realized she could not live continually in the joy of the Visitation yet it was a source of strength and it was out of this strength that she spoke the first great procla-mation of the teaching of her Son. Indeed it is true to say the Mary of the Magniftcat was the first Christian preacher. The mystery or unfolding of the Visitation is the story of each of our lives. Life is never the same once we have been honored with such a visit. There will be sadness and joy but also, in hope, there will be faith and serenity. Will our meetings be good news of support, under-standing and the unselfish love that is the sure way of saying also to God "Here I am, I come to do your will". In this way we, too, can be bearers of Christ - to his world and ours. Fr. Christopher Bennett

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

In our own time, there are so many needs which demand a com-passionate response from Christians…how can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, 50 All people are made in the very image of God and God is incar-nate in our image. Poor people in obscure villages, political leaders in Washington children growing up in the inner city, students at elite universi-ties, single parents struggling to make it, prisoners, refugees landless farmers, women, the elderly, and those caught up in war are all human beings with dignity. All people should be greeted with a sincere “Blessed are you…..” The selection from Micah ends with the line “He shall be peace.” We receive a special challenge in light of ongoing war in Syria and the dozens of other active conflicts around our world. In his 2005 Christmas Eve homily Benedict XVI said: “Christ gives himself to us and, in doing so, gives us his peace. He gives it to us so that we can carry the light of peace within and give it to others. He gives it to us so that we can become peacemakers and builders of peace in the world. And so we pray: Lord fulfill your promise ! Where there is con-flict, give birth to peace ! Where there is hatred, make love spring up !Where darkness prevails, let light shine. Make us heralds of your peace ! Amen.” December 20: International Human Solidarity Day http:///social.un.org./index/InternationalDays/InternationalHumanSolidarit… Any questions or comments please direct them to: Thomas Walsh [email protected]

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us

that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by mon-

ey; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking hap-piness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by for-giveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in

weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and

forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the

poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit

for ever and ever. Amen.
